INTERGALACTIC CAN CHAMPION

enojy posted:

It's pretty easy and intuitive! Just ever so slightly lift the weight on your front foot and use your back foot to maneuver the tail to one side in one smooth motion. Make sure the front foot follows with the board as it turns. The front wheels should only leave the ground a smidge, if at all. You need to lean your weight in the opposite direction of travel in order to balance it all out, or else the wheels will grip and you will fall forward. Too much weight distribution to the rear, and the board will just slide out from under you. The faster you're going, the easier it is to powerslide.

Bombing hills still scares the poo poo out of me, but that's part of the fun. For some reason, falling at high speed isn't so bad. As long as you roll with it, you usually just end up with some annoying road rash for a week or two.

After I got a little bit more comfortable on my board and wanted a lot more turning capabilities, I loosened up my truck nuts as far as they go without coming off the bolt. Turning is now much faster and I can make much tighter turns as well. Went down some fairly steep gated community roads with a friend of mine yesterday and was able to carve them (and not die!). Rich people's roads are as smooth as butter.

Seattle skaters: there has been some work on Marginal Way lately. They fixed the missing chunk in the corner and put in a channel drop-in there and did one half of the pipe that the channel leads into. They also took out the parking lot curb stick and smoothed out the bank that is right behind it.

I love Marginal Way. It's the only place to skate in the city regardless of the weather.

For some reason when I stand on my board I go backwards. Even if I lean forward. Hmmmmm...it seems I'll extremely rusty/bad at this.

Anybody have any experience going from boards to boots? I'm freshly out of college, and thus freshly employed, and thus still spending money recklessly. I'm thinking of dropping some money on some new toys for my feet, since I like the idea of being able to drop in without loosing my board and falling on my face/rear end.

Is it possible to boot and board casually without totally loving your balance on either up? Chatting with all the roller bladers at the local park hasn't yielded anyone who also skateboards, so it doesn't seem like they're very interchangeable.

Am I gonna kill myself and my balance?

Let's talk Football.
They're totally different. Plus, you'll drop in and then smash your face with rollerblades and not a skateboard...so that will be consistent.

Having a stable center of gravity is good for most sports I guess.

..skating and blading both develop core/leg strength too.

Just don't go around waxing any rails at my local parks please, rollerbladers seem to have a nasty habit of doing that.

After riding my board for a few weeks I've started to develop very sharp pains in my right ankle, which seems to be caused/aggravated by pushing and riding over cracks in sidewalk. Is this just a phase I should work through or a sign of an injury? I took a few days off from riding to see if it would go away but it came back stronger the next time I rode.

Any advice would be helpful, it sucks to be missing out on riding while I'm still so motivated to learn.

I never rollerbladed before, but watching them it seems like you have to be much more flexible if you want to do the tricks, they all involve tucking in one way or another.

Went to the skate shop to pick up some better bearings for my crappy wheels and ended up buying some huge soft wheels to go with them, it's really nice, being able to coast for a block or two. I know I'm going to have a pretty tough time doing any street skating with them though, they're heavy!

e: 62mm! starting to think I should have possibly picked out a smaller set, but I figure they'll wear down soon enough.

I can officially confirm that this is not true. I'm the worst about switching out wheels and usually end up riding the same pair for years at a time. I typically start out with 52mm and by the time I've taken them off they're closer to 48mm and are barely much larger than the bearings themselves.

I used to boot aswell as board and I did both for a few years, Neither one affected the other as they were both done so differently in my eyes. so one didn't really step into the other sports boundaries, if anything they both helped develop my balance a lot more.

this does not sound normal, you may have rolled your ankle at one point

this is not true, if you skate alot your wheels will wear down. how on earth did you fit 62mm wheels onto a normal street deck?

High trucks + riser pads?

But still, you shouldn't be buying 62mm wheels for a street deck. It's weird the dude at the shop didn't say anything.

Low trucks, no riser pads, and yeah it's def weird he didn't say anything but I've been doing great(ish) with them so far. They go way faster than I can skate down any significant incline though. I haven't had much wheel bite so far, which I think is because my bushings are extremely hard - I have the kingpin nut flush with the bolt, but everybody still says I'm riding tight vOv. I'm probably going to leave them on because I can't really afford to buy things that I don't use. Any way I could get my money's worth out of them?

Find an old cruiser board, and throw the wheels on em. Shop wheels are usually only about 20$ see if you can get hooked up. Otherwise just skate your wheels.

Riser pads are only 25 cents or so, pick up two 1/4" pads and you'll be set.

It will feel strange, but better than what it will feel like to get nasty wheel bite.

I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some decent Skate movies to sit down and watch... I'm a snowboarder at heart and I've pretty much worked my way through all the good 2010 snowporn releases.

I've ordered "This is skateboarding" and "Fully Flared" based on reading this thread and a poor google search but want to expand my collection a bit more. Cheers!

I really liked Globe's "United by Fate" series, it's not as spectacular as a lot of big-name videos but there's some really good bits in it. They just posted the last part.

When trying to find out why Mullen only has a tiny bit in it I read that he's basically blown his hip and it trying to learn to skate all over again?

I'm getting back into skateboarding although I've never been that good, to be honest. I can pop a decent ollie :smug: but I'm still trying to get the hang of timing jumps up and off things. It's a killer!

Then there's kickflips. I've still to convince my brain that it's a good idea to land on the magical spinny thing below me (front foot planting). Ho hum. :smith:

Oh yeah, I'm a bit late getting into this game at 25.

Edit: typo.

I just started riding, got a longboard to cruise/get around on and jesus christ skateboarding uses a completely different set of muscles than anything else I've done, I'm dying :sweatdrop: I thought I was in pretty decent shape.
I look like an idiot stopping every few seconds, but I've only fallen once (flat on my rear end trying to go off a curb) and I'm learning - on the last leg of my ride today I figured out "bend your knees you tard, makes things a lot easier to control".

Now I just need to learn a decent way to stop instead of hurling myself at my lawn and hoping I'll be able to stay on my feet and run out of momentum before I hit something. v:shobon:v

Try to carve out of the speed. If you have hard enough wheels you can powerslide to a stop. If not, just use your pushing foot to brake, even if it means just dangling your foot on the side of the board to hit the ground.

VROOM VROOM
Jun 8, 2005
I had carved out a lot, but ended up only slow enough to not kill me if I fell off. As I said I've just started, I have neither the skill nor equipment to powerslide, but I'll practice my foot braking, sorry new shoes!

Don't feel bad about the not getting powersliding right away. I've ridden a skate board off and on for 20+ years, powerslides were always something I could do fine when younger, but for some goddamned reason, I can't get my longboard to break loose for poo poo.

Applebees Appetizer
Jan 23, 2006

Unless you're flying down a hill there's no need to learn how to powerslide, especially if you're a beginner. Just concentrate on balancing on one foot and putting the other on the ground and letting it slide, gradually increasing the pressure on the foot on the ground until you stop.

I can be going full speed as fast as I can push myself and stop in a very short distance just by using my foot. The more you practice, and the better your balance gets, the harder you can brake.

It's an important part of skateboarding, especially if you're in populated areas, if you can't stop quickly you have no business skating around people and traffic.

It took me about a month or so but I've finally learned how to ollie onto curbs, which feels pretty great to do. I swapped back out for my original smaller wheels with my new bearings, and I can definitely pop better, but I feel way slow. I'm going to get some wheels in between crazy big and too small next.
