Woops, was missing one character. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXffAL505Io Anyway, there's plenty of other vids of it that are better. Such as this one which is mostly a rotary engine (no not that kind) run in a Sopwith Camel after which the Napier shows up all passive aggressive like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYBwExecGKU

Holy poo poo, that was at Team O'Neil's. I've had the extreme fortune of doing rally school there. They're carrying some serious speed out there. In our trainer Golfs and Jettas it was pretty much impossible (nerves-wise) to catch air on those jumps. They screwed up in pretty much all the usual spots. Where Atko spins right after the barn at 2:13 is where I plowed a car into a snow bank and had to get recovered For the most part, the takes show actual contiguous runs on the track, though they didn't seem to use or show the most dangerous part of the course.

KozmoNaut posted:Rotary engines boggle my mind. The high rotating mass must be hard to control, on the other hand all that weight probably makes them pretty smooth. The main problem with rotaries was the gyroscopic effects. Aircraft like the Camel suffered from fairly treacherous handling characteristics, thanks to gyroscopic precession from the spinning engine. In rotary engined aircraft, if the pilot attempted to bank to the right, for example, the plane would try and enter a dive. If he banked left, the plane would climb. If he attempted to climb, it would bank right and if he attempted to dive he would actually turn left. While this precession could be exploited by skilled pilots to make their aircraft more maneuverable (they could turn right far faster than to the left), it tended to be lethal for inexperienced pilots, which made training difficult. Rotaries also suffered from being speed-limited by their mass, which limited power output. While developments to inline engines resulted in motors that could spin a propeller somewhere around 2000 rpm, rotaries wasted so much energy moving the engine that they hit a brick wall in terms of power output, and they were completely replaced by radial engines by the mid 1920's.

At VIR last weekend, a white Golf in our group dropped coolant going into and through turn 1. I'm in the first red car seen at the end of this video. I could see a roofline by the trees (I'm not sure now whether it was this Porsche or the silver TT who goes off directly in front of him), and I presumed that the reason for the yellow flag was someone overcooking turn 1. Halfway through the turn, though, I saw the Golf also off track to the inside of turn 2 spinning its front wheels in the muck the rains had made of the ground. We hit the coolant slick halfway through the turn, but quattro and ESP (which was left on due to the track being wet) saved me. The unexpected sliding woke me up for sure. The Porsche driver took out the 100' braking marker, but no damage was done to his car. The TT went into the tires, however, and its right front was torn up. The owner was able to drive it home, luckily. The long ride off track.

He seemed to know what he was going for the most part but something that always catches my ear or eye is using the material inconel. Why on earth is inconel being used for this stuff? Why would you use an inconel heat shield when the exhaust housing of the turbo is made from cast steel? I know cobb makes an inconel wrx up pipe and it seems like the same BS. How are you gonna run steel pistons and steel exhaust housing but justify the use of inconel at any point in between?

What am I missing? Did inconel go through the roof in the last couple years? I used to make jewelry with it and it was maybe 1.1x the price of stainless. It had a weird finish that I liked, but it was sort of a bitch to twist, like titanium. Is that why it's weird to use in this case, like high machining costs or something?

Its tough to machine, doesn't weld well (relatively), costs pretty high for production (as does stainless). Its good for what its good for, but to make a heat shield out of it? Stainless would be cheaper, easier to form, look better, etc. The cobb pipe uses investment casting to make up pipes out of which I would imagine costs a lot more than some laser cut or machined flanges welded on to a CNC bent steel pipe. You can (if you wanted to) make a decent up pipe with zero machining time, just have to grind the mating surfaces to fit smoothly. The inconel pipe will have to be machined though otherwise the surfaces wont be near flat after casting. AnomalousBoners fucked around with this message at 06:38 on Dec 1, 2009 |
