Screening times have been announced for Until the Light Takes Us in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Yup, that would be the first time. And I'm fine with it, because plans for the hockey game aren't solid yet--and we did discuss this movie a month or so ago. But if you might have to cancel, perhaps another day/time would work better? I'm open on Tuesday and Thursday as well.

Why after all the black metal bands do they list music by Boards of Canada ? Anyhow, is there anyone who wants to see the NYC showing of 9:15p ? I live on LI so I could commute out there after work. This will probably be the best thing since the VBS TNBM documentary. By the way, did anyone get to NYC to see Peter Beste display ? I saw it last May + June it was the best. I remember buying the original version when it was released and being absolutely blown away by what I was hearing. One of the most depressed black metal recordings ever released. Do you know if this is the case for Darkthrone's albums as well? A bunch of them were re-mastered and I haven't heard the originals. Is there a big difference?

Yeah, I hope it's not the typical black metal documentary, because they tend to suck. I'd rather have silence than sensationalism, as long as it contributes to the overall feel of the movie. Anyway, does anyone know if this will be out on DVD anytime soon? I'm not sure if it will ever screen here, I don't even think it's got European distribution.

There isn't a lot of new information presented in the film, but it's easily worth the $7. Also, Fenriz is hysterical. Apparently they have something like 350 hours of extra footage, so a DVD is highly likely, although without any tentative date.

The directors told me that they indeed do have hundreds of hours more to piece together into extras, and the whole film festival circuit (including in several Nordic countries) was obviously aimed at securing a screen run. I think it was good to watch the film with the filmmakers and have them answer questions after the showing (even if it turned into a yes-no match on whether there national socialism was inherent in black metal) because it definitely had the potential to leave audiences cold.

A writer friend at one of the detroit indie papers had this film reviewed, and just shared the link: http://www.metrotimes.com/screens/review.asp?rid=25817 I think the review is pretty spot-on (e: if not a bit pretentious) in that he writes the film won't be too intriguing for non-fans. "Waxing nostalgic" is absolutely correct. In other news, does anyone listen to Melechesh?

What are some good bands similar to Windir or Vreid? What I am mainly looking for is not singing about satan all the time and trying so hard to offend people. Black Metal might not be a good genre to look for things like that but I like the growling vocals.

Since you like Windir, you might like Mistur, who just released their first album. The band features one of the guitarists from Windir, and has a similar style in my opinion. Is there anything in particular you like about the two aforementioned bands, other than the lack of offensiveness? Might make it easier to make some recommendations.

How, exactly, is Norway heterogeneous? Also, precisely the fact that everything in Norway at the time was so god drat hunky dory is the reason that some "plunged so far off the deep end". I'll spoiler this bit since many people haven't seen the film but aside from the quite clear mental illnesses of some people (Dead) the feeling of alienation in one's own homogeneous culture is what drove others to severe acts of rebellion (Varg, all the other church burners). He says as much in that scene when he tells of waiting for World War 3 to start.

It's about as close to Windir as you're going to get, and has a couple of the same members, also.

If you're not into the whole "satan"-thing, you could look into some of the big'uns like Immortal and Enslaved for starters, then just branch out from there. edit: beaten.

I like that. I also prefer the shrill singing instead of the aforementioned Amon Amarth's deep growling. The melody in general is also a bit more complex. I relalize that's very poorly worded but I have zero experience in musical terminology. If this helps, my favorite Windir songs are Despot, The Blacksmith and the Troll of somethingsomething, Dance of Mortal Lust, Fagning. Also, I checked Immortal on Wikipedia and I'll defineately check them out, seeing that they have high ratings in reviews.

Stian Bakketeig from Windir formed them after Valfar died and they frankly sound almost exactly what you'd expect Windir to sound like if they were still around. They've only put out one album 'Attende' so far and it's really worth picking up. Of all the bands that formed from the ashes of Windir, they're by far my favourite, though I'd also really recommend Cor Scorpii as well.

I think you're making the great assumption that the documentarians are actual fans of the genre and know the really obscure stuff, instead of people who stumbled upon a great story (Violence and Satanism? In Norway?!  ) and milked it for all it's worth. And I loved the Boards of Canada music in the film. It was stronger because they didn't use all BM all the time for the background music. It adds to the slow pace of the film.

It's a different kind of black metal, but one where the vocals are definitely just another instrument layered on, and not in the foreground. As I said, they're different musically, preferring a wall-of-noise approach to the more individually-constructed instrument lines of Windir and its successors. So in that sense they're a bit more like Emperor. Who, along with Immortal etc. is a staple of the genre and worth a spin. If you don't like it, fine, move on. But you might.
