Are you using Linux? There's an issue with the latest version of Qt and Opera <10.10 which hit me on my Linux box. Upgrading to 10.10 should fix it, so just do that. You can override it with some environment variables, and I can dig up that info if you want, but you should really just upgrade.

If you're not on Linux, then I don't know.

Actually not on Linux for this particular issue, though since I updated to 10.10 it hasn't recurred so far in any case. Here's hoping...

That is either not normal or not Opera's fault- I've got eight tabs open using ~200 megs and ~15% cpu usage.

So far I've seen it on huffingtonpost.com, occasionally here in the forums, and a few miscellaneous others. Anyone have any idea what could be causing it? Using 10.01. I've double-checked that this doesn't happen on those sites in FireFox.

This is happening to me too, but only on the forums. The entire browser goes laggy until I press the stop button. On the forums it usually gets stuck on loading ad.trafficmp.com

I can confirm this.

I read the post about Opera using a lot of CPU, figured I'd check and noticed that mine was on 50% as well. The only thing it was attempting to do at the time was load ad.trafficmp.com - I blocked it through the filter and now Opera is back down to regular numbers. For some reason this particular ad server is really making Opera work.

I figured it out. If any of my SA tabs were stuck loading an unresponsive ad server, cpu usage jumped to 50%. Cycle through all and press esc, dropped back to normal.

I just updated my urlfilter and now everything works like a charm. Still, weird as gently caress.

Most ad servers run through a poo poo-ton of javascript to deliver their ads, which results in Opera being fairly unhappy with them.

Well, after someone mentioned issues with Opera 10 and the QuickMenu, I went through and redid the QuickMenu using the default Opera 10 menu.ini file. The biggest change is that it now uses defined names instead of ID numbers for the menus, and while I'm pretty sure it was fully backwards-compatible (it worked for me, at least), this is probably the more future-proof way to go.

You can download the the SA QuickMenu 2.0 here, and the instructions on how to set it up in the first post should apply.

Should be updated with the current forums listing as well. I also added a link to this thread in the User Pages submenu in case you need your Opera news fix.

I use this for steeping my tea. Sometimes. (Every once in a while.)

In all honesty, I think the usefulness of Opera widgets is undermined by the fact that Opera actually has to be open to use them. Which makes me kind of intrigued that they're finally severing widgets' dependence on the browser.

Is there a way to protect some of your bookmarks from showing as shortcuts up in your address bar when you type in it? I, er, have some links I'd like didn't show up when other people use my computer. There's are right-click folder features from what I can tell.

I don't think there's any such thing as "private bookmarks," but I imagine if the URL is too complicated for you to remember, you could try something like copying them to a note and putting those notes under a folder. It's unlikely anyone but you even knows about that feature, much less would go digging around in them.

Edit: Also, if you really don't want them to see it, then I'd clear them out of your History after you visit them - because those can show up in the address bar too.

I dunno, I'm getting the same issue on two completely different machines.

My work PC is a crappy old 3ghz P4 with a tiny amount of RAM running WinXP SP3 and it can't handle having Opera open for longer than 30 minutes, and only one tab.

My home PC is a nice new AMD Phenom based machine with 8 gigs of RAM and Win7 and I left it on with Opera running last night and it was unusable by the morning, Opera had sucked up a huge amount of memory.

On both machines it'll just keep sucking up memory, and on both machines performance is terrible after 10 minutes, typing a reply like this I get noticeable typing lag.

I dunno, I've searched and I can't find anything, turning off all the fancy poo poo helps a bit, but doesn't cure it. It's really annoying because I love Opera :(

Try uninstalling using AppTrap or AppZapper or whatever your "Basic functionality that's not included in the OS WHY?!" application of choice is, run through your Libraries and Preferences folders(global and user-specifics) to be sure nothing referencing Opera exists, then reinstalling. If it persists, file a bug report with Opera.

This is from a while back but there are a few ways you can do it. You can tailor the name of the bookmark's alias so you can just change it to something that won't show up as you type. If it's the URL I guess you could tinyurl them? It won't help if you bookmark porn like a madman but for a manageable size you can do that and just change the nicknames from "porn" and "terrorism plan" to "pron" and "surprise".

The other method that "works" but may be risky is to delete your porn and terrorist bookmarks to the Trash folder. While they're in the trash folder they're still clickable but they won't show up in the address field autocompletes. However, I have no idea how the trash folder is policed so they may up and vanish. Just copy your bookmarks.adr to bookmarks.adr.backup to protect them. For what it's worth, my bookmark trash folder has often been loaded with old poo poo until I manually empty it so it might be workable. Just backup and it should work.

Yeah, killing the history logging is probably a generally good idea for shared computers anyway. The less they know about your browsing habits is probably good but it's also nice to be shielded from their browsing habits. I'd like to see tighter UI integration with Windows 7, though that's unlikely. My biggest wish would be for the Windows 7 taskbar previews to show the contents of the individual tabs, a la Internet Explorer in Win7. Much better than the new tab/thumbnail previews in v10, which I find to be sort of unnecessarily silly.
