Added some ATF to my power steering reservoir. It was pretty low. I thought my tie rods were loose, but I guess the play they have is what they're supposed to have. I replaced them in the spring. ATF in the power steering, ATF in the manual gearbox... E36s are weird as hell sometimes.

Took a scrub pad and some Purple Power to the nasty engine of my '77 280z and started attempting to repair the center console with some epoxy and fiberglass. Started it up just to hear it, saving up for brake, tire and suspension repairs/upgrades, so maybe by spring I can leave some black stripes on the road.

I drove my car into a ditch. I took it up a dirt track up in the mountain ranges behind my hometown. I came around the corner and noticed a large rock buried in the road. I moved to the left to avoid it and the rear left fell onto the soft leaf mulch on the side of the road.  Mother fuckin' crunch. "Fixed" my headlight retractors. The fingers that hold the whole passenger-side headlight assembly in place were slipping off the bar that actually moves the assembly up and down, so for the last few months they've just been held permanently up with a hose clamp. Today I got tired of looking at it like that so I just bent the fingers so they'd stay on the bar. This, I think, is not an ideal solution. However the right way to fix it is to disassemble the whole drat headlight retractor and realign it so the bar doesn't slant so far off those little fingers, and incidentally fix the bit on the other side where the axle of the retractor linkage is held on by grease and happy thoughts, but that's gonna work out to a multi-day project and god drat it the way I did it works okay. Probably. I've got a spare hose clamp just in case.

So this whole time I was using an example tune that was for a car with the potential to run 15psi, which made the car run really weird all the time.  For those playing at home about 105 Kpa is about all a natural aspirated car will ever see unless you are at the bottom of the ocean or something. So, many hours later I have this.  I also just redid my spark table so running 93 is a must, no more screwing around on that department.

Yesterday, it started losing power after sitting for a while. I'd turn the key and it would go dead. I'd jiggle the wiring harness and it would be fine until I parked it again. So, I took it all apart and redid my wiring. I don't think I had the positive wire clamped in the terminal tight enough. I also took apart and re-wrapped the harness about 100% more tightly. So far so good. Let's hope it keeps this time. The wires in the harness looked fine, so I doubt it was another lose connection - I think it was all me.

New front valve cover gasket. Also my tire was losing pressure. A day or two after, it would drop down to around 25 psi. Took it to the tire place. The rim was corroded, they sanded it and sealed it.

Received, picked up or ordered the remaining parts to fix up the ZX2. The only other things that may be/are worn are the two ball joints, tie rod ends, and motor mounts. The mounts are like loving $300 so Sister can just live with the vibration at idle. Hopefully i'll be 100% in under two weeks.

Today my girlfriend found out that her 2007 Camry has $12,000+ worth of damage to it after an accident occurred two days ago. With a park bench. On a loving freeway (going 70mph). That fell out of the back of truck (and they didn't notice). It's so terribly unlucky that I honestly don't even know what to say. It appears as though a loving metal bracket on the bench (after the whole thing struck the car) ripped through the front bumper and along the frame (cutting through it, too). On its way through the bumper it also ripped through a bunch of other poo poo (though I'm not exactly sure what because I didn't see much of the car after it was towed). I know it hosed the suspension because the impact side (driver) was a good 6-8 inches lower than usual, even before the tire began to deflate. loving totaled. gently caress. That thing was her baby, man

When she first called me she said she hit a chair but that the car wasn't drivable (something about that didn't add up). I came to pick her up and then I saw the damage AND amount of chair debris everywhere...it was ridiculous. She's doing fine and thankfully with how high the car rides all the damage happened on the lower end of the bumper and underneath the car. If the bench would have still been tumbling when she hit...gently caress man, I don't even want to think about it and how lucky she was. I'm just glad she's alright and that the car didn't flip or anything when she panicked (it honestly doesn't look like $12,000 worth of damage until you look underneath/inside). EDIT: Damage was done to both fenders, the bumper/grille, the hood, suspension, axle (snapped), and the frame (cut through). Everything would have to be replaced and can't be pounded out (thought the hood would could have been but it's way bent). She's incredibly lucky. Trust me.... no matter what you do... it will have a very noticeable vibration at idle. It's just a rough idling motor. My ZX2 idles so rough that the steering wheel becomes a blur at times. But still it has 160 thousand miles and still runs like a champ.

If the motor mount is really bad you should fix it before it breaks something really expensive. I let a bad motor mount go and the engine shifted and busted the flex pipe. Wound up needing engine mounts, flex pipe, a tranny mount, and some weirdo bolts we had to special order because we didn't have anything else that would fit.

I'm just assuming the mounts are bad because of the vibration at idle. The steering wheel does blur up and down a bit and various buzzes happen around the cabin. My thinking went - "worn mounts = less resistance for the motor to move, the motor can now move further before an opposing force moves it the other way - vibration". The car has 112,000 on it right now, I don't have any prior experience with it. So far i've been ordering maintenance parts, fixing the redneck fixes, and fixing the real problem that the rednecks were trying to fix (PCV hose open to atmosphere). If you say ZX2s are buzzy, then this one is probably fine. There's no engine clunk that would indicate a truly hosed mount. I'll be all up in the wheel wells, so I'll be able to get a close look at all the mounts.

Continuing with the ZX2 talk I started stripping the very crappy window tint off the inside of the glass. So far the driver's window is tint-free but I did put a couple small scratches in the glass with the razor blade. I pulled the tint off the back glass. The outer layer came off but the inner layer is still stuck to the glass in some parts. This is going to be trouble I can tell. I know that you have to take it easy with the razor blade on the back glass because the blade can tear up the rear defrost element.

I know auto parts stores sell some sort of spray that's supposed to help remove tint somehow. I don't have any idea whether it works or not, though. I DO know that peeling off old tint is a very stinky job.

As for content, I dropped the miata off insurance (kept comp. I guess?) since I took it off the road yesterday. Hopefully it turns awesome over the winter, I've got a lot of plans for it. Mostly just suspension stuff though.

The PCV hoses always break on these and will cause the car to die as soon as your reach a stop sign. Have you done your timing belt yet? If not you might wanna look into it. Its a non-interference motor but you'll still be stranded. 112k is just getting started for these cars.

Water pump, too, but from Autozone. After looking at it, and then looking at schematics on alldata, I now realize it is driven off the accessory belt, not the timing belt. Whatever. I'm replacing the struts with the S/R Tokicos (because they're cheap and Summit is like 50 minutes away), springs with the S/R Eibachs, bushings with ES urethane jobbers, and doing the timing belt and crap while I have the whole strut out of the right wheel well. I'll also be putting on 4 new tires and checking the tie rod ends and ball joints while i'm in there. I bet both of those are expensive and a huge pain in the rear end, too. After that, it's just re-doing all the 0-120,000 mile maintenance actions properly. There was a receipt for a fuel filter change at 98k, but the one I found inside was an original part. I did the front brakes this past summer and replaced everything there. The back brakes have that stupid loving #4 phillips screw of doom. There's a lot of bulbs out inside the cabin, presumably because the whole wiring harness in the trunk smoked itself and had to be replaced, and took other bulbs out in the process.

Ordered new wheels and tires for the TT (OZ Alleggerita in anthracite with Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs) and new rotors for its Stoptechs because I also ordered Carbotech Bobcats and XP-10s to replace the Ferodo 2500s currently on the car. I also ordered some stainless brake lines for the RS 4, and it will probably be getting some Bridgestone RE-11s before winter's over. I can't wait for spring.

Replaced the plugs today. The old ones look ok, right?    The bit of grit on the electrode of the first one is from me pulling it out awkwardly. I tried my best not to do that when putting the new ones in.

I flushed and filled the coolant system because it finally is cold enough that without a proper mix the stuff would freeze and I wasn't sure how well it was mixed when I bought it.
