Looking for a web developer based in Montreal/Ottawa/Toronto, this is a work from home position.

Work from home on a contract basis with an emerging Social Networking site geared towards dancers.
You must be knowledgeable in PHP, SMARTY, Ruby on Rails. Prior experience in social networking an asset.

We will require some light photoshop/illustrator work done, if you are unable to do this, please ensure you have a reliable artist that you may subcontract at your own cost.

Must be able to travel to our office in Toronto 1-5 times during the duration of the contract. The rest of the collaboration will be done VIA netmeeting and iChat. The initial interview will be done via Videoconference because of time constraints. But we would like to take our chosen applicants out to lunch in Toronto and discuss our vision more in depth to find the right candidate.

You would report to our "web guru" but would be doing most if not all of the work independently. The "web guru" is there in a purely advisory capacity.

Its a small but well funded three person startup, must be able to relay ideas in layman terms as one of our colleagues is not tech savvy.

You MUST speak english as a first language and we are really looking for someone under the age of 30.

Bilingual candidates are preferred.

You must have access to broadband internet and own a mobile phone, one with data capabilities is preferred and if we decide to continue our relationship past the initial contract you will be supplied with a device capable of receiving and sending email if you do have one.

Visible minority and women candidates will be given preference as your colleagues will all fit in one of these categories and we would like to emphasize our sites focus on diversity. LGBT applicants are also strongly encouraged to apply.

All employees are required to sign a non disclosure agreement, therefore must be 18+ with governmental issued ID.

Also looking for a CONSULTANT with prior experience working with SUCCESSFUL social networking startups. Willing to compensate the right person appropriately. This would be in a consulting capacity and you would report directly to myself and our principle funder. Your references must be extensive and impeccable.

You can contact me via PM or post in this thread and I will contact you with details about the site and position.

Sorry about the Wall of text, but we have been having terrible luck on Craigslist and really are looking for very specific type of candidate.

What I'm NOT looking for: At the moment, I'll do anything within reason.

Its a job requirement seeing as how our site caters to people in the 16-30 demographic and they would be better served by someone in that capacity.

However if an older candidate can demonstrate they understand the unique needs of our users then we would be glad to make them a member of the team.

Triple Tech

So what, are you quitting to join Homo Explosion?
There are multiple openings at my company in Midtown Manhattan.

Who are we?

We are a small financial services company. Our clients are all financial institutions.

Where are we?
New York, NY (Midtown Manhattan)

What are we looking for?

• Developers/web developers (transitioning away from Perl to C#)

Our back-end scripts and web product are written in Perl. We don't yet use the new crop of stuff like Catalyst and Moose, but I'm trying to change that. One of our new projects runs on Moose, Catalyst, and Template::Toolkit. The web products use a healthy dash of Javascript and CSS. Some new research products are written in C#.

And recently, we've learned that the company is to move everything to C#. We still use Perl today, but the long term plan is all .NET. Potential applicants will have to successfully straddle this line until the transition is complete.

• Database development specialist

Our database is SQL Server 2005. Database design doesn't seem to be our forte, so you will act as the advocate for best database practices. You should know how to speak Perl/C# and will work with the development teams to provide efficient access to the database. This however is not a "DBA" role.

Why work for us?

Because you're out of a job. Not gonna lie, this place isn't perfect. It has its management problems... But they do tend to treat each other like family. And maybe other factors will tip it in your favor. Relatively easy work, good pay, benefits, etc.

I am hungry, I want to apply!

PM me.

it has already been pointed out, but it is not proper nor ethical to prefer gay, minorities, or young people in the modern business world. We tend to make our work the focal point, not things beyond our control. Otherwise one appears discriminatory.

Also, I don't work there anymore, just know the guys that run the place and thought I would gIve a referral. Plus, it is expensive to contract a dev for just one project.

Out of curiosity, why do you need a web developer for your site if you have a "web guru"?

We're aware of the cost and its expensive but not prohibitive.

The web guru is a retired silicon valley success story/millionaire who happens to be the uncle of my cofounder.

He'd rather play golf then code for his nieces website. Plus he funded us, if he was the developer, then what the hell are we doing. Having him do code would be ridiculous, the man has a multi section wiki article about him and his contributions to technology.

I said we encourage those applicants not demand them. Plus there is little wrong with wanting diversity in your company. Many companies hire with this in mind, they just don't post it up.
Since I don't have the benefit of an HR department to screen my applicants, so I did by being ultra specific.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to diversify a company, and in fact I've done very similar things. Last time my company was hiring an entry-level tech support minion, we tried really hard to find a non-white-male applicant who was even close to qualified. But we didn't put "girls preferred" in the ad.

Publicly advertising that you have a preference for a certain kind of candidate is probably a very bad idea, from a legal standpoint. What's to stop me from applying, then suing for discrimination when you don't hire me because I'm not gay enough? Even if the claim were nonsense (and you really didn't hire me because I'm underqualified and live 2000 miles away from the office), I could probably find a lawyer to take the case and get a nice settlement.

Its not -what- your hiring that matters, its the fact that you're putting so much effort into specificly caring what you're hiring. And its not just us neckbeards: Go publish a help wanted ad in the paper saying you're looking for a gay web developer. Or a white web developer. The responses will be about the same.

You need to have a company sponsor before you are eligible for a clearance. Keep in mind that most private companies do not require a clearance for these positions unless you are a government contractor or "fed" yourself.

I don't know how the private industry works with the clearances, but I work for a DOE contractor and had to fill out my clearance application on the first week. In the meantime, they operate under a need to know basis. As long as it isn't truly classified and you have a need to know, you should be fine.

Most places don't hire early and make you twiddle your thumbs waiting for work to do. Otherwise, no one would be able to do work. They can also put you in for a lower level at the same time as a higher level. Depending on the clearance, it could take two months or two years.

Word of warning, most every open position requiring clearance will go to any qualified pre-cleared applicant. Hopefully you have an in with the company.
