Turbo P is back to save the thread! That maestro documentary is pretty awesome. I've watched a few others that have probably been linked in this thread, one about Chicago and the other about Detroit. Its great to see the New York perspective. I would give up all this new technology poo poo to go back to when things first started, where House was born. The music now is pretty loving good, though.

BUT IM A DJ AND PEOPLE COME UP TO ME AT CLUBS HEH *drops a shitload of names* No seriously, Threatis knows what he's talking about. Any hate in this thread is misplaced anyway, if you ask me, since you should all be hopped up on love drugs. That being said, I'm going to post a bunch of progressive (blogressive?) house to spite him. Stimming - Melodica http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlxbwpPZfPY This is brand new stuff. Good for relaxing by yourself like a villain Adam K and Soha - In the Music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jfMsxhHquM These guys get quite a bit of play around Toronto. Way underrated here, though, since its their home town. You've probably heard their flagship songs Twilight, or Need To Feel Loved. This is their take on a house classic (imo) by Deep Swing. Pryda - Melo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXS73NDYapg Eric Prydz catches a lot of poo poo for sounding like a lot of other played out trance, but his Pryda side project is nothing short of genius (imo) by deep swing. You've probably heard Pjanoo, but this song blows the pants off of that poo poo any day if you ask me. JPL - We're on the Moon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amfoZYRsuhY Stumbled upon this through an internet radio station and it's criminal that this song has under 1000 views on youtube. 8 minutes of feelgood beats and a wall of sound. Moderat - Rusty Nails http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoxUiqUpkw4 A little dubsteppy, and a little too introspective for this thread, but its drat good song either way. Great sounding melody on the chorus, and a cool video that you should check out even if you're not a fan of the music. Gui Boratto - No Turning Back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe18N8U87YU Another feelgood proghouse track. I'm sure you've heard It's a Beautiful Life, and, again, this blows the pants off of that played-out nonsense. Justin Timberwolf fucked around with this message at 08:05 on Jan 15, 2010 |

Okay, newbie here, so be nice to me. (I haven't read the whole thread, it's hard to follow for someone like me, sorry for that.) I want to get into house music, but am having a hard time. Basically, I used to intensely dislike anything electronic, before realising that there was stuff out there I do actually like. I just don't know precisely what it is yet, because I know so little electronic music. Basically I suspect that: - what I dislike is "electro-pop", generally poppy songs, songs made for dancing only, "immature" trance stuff (immature being my impression of it, not intended to offend people who like that kind of music). - what I like is "deep house", generally slower songs I guess, more intense-sounding, melancholic, songs also for "chilling" and not just dancing, something like that. For instance, a couple of songs that I like, from my very small and arbitrary "collection" (don't laugh, I'm a newbie!): - Paul Kalkbrenner - Sky and Sand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do5-PiJeKmA - Ida Corr vs. Fedde le Grand - Let Me Think About It (club remix) (I don't think this needs a link) Am I right that what I like is "deep house"? Could you recommend some artists/songs I would like? And a way to get into this kind of music? I would greatly appreciate it! Added: I'm kinda liking what Lysis posted above on this page.... The constant mashing together of sounds is appropriate for discussion of the electronic/dance music scene, and if we had a bunch of narrow genre'd threads, they would flood nmd and then die from underpopulation. Plus we would never have these entertaining arguments. There should probably be an electro-pop thread though.

Regression posted:- what I dislike is "electro-pop", generally poppy songs, songs made for dancing only, "immature" trance stuff (immature being my impression of it, not intended to offend people who like that kind of music). Electro-pop isn't the name of a style of music. It's just a description which could mean different things depending on the intent of the speaker. In this thread, it's being used as an umbrella term for pop songs with electronic instrumentation. So it's a pretty broad and vague descriptor. But what you like is more important than what you don't, anyway, so I'll throw out some things you might like and you can tell us what you think of them: https://www.myspace.com/larryheardakamrfingers - One of the first house DJs and producers. "Can you Feel it", in the Myspace player, is considered the first deep house record. https://www.myspace.com/djmiguelmigs - The poppier side of deep house. Great summer music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8cmdbaNPEE - One of Miguel Migs's older, mellower sample-driven tracks https://www.myspace.com/kevinyost - The jazzier side of deep house. https://www.anderstrentemoller.com - Acclaimed electronic musician who falls somewhere along the techno <-> house continuum. Not "sunny"-sounding like the above. https://www.myspace.com/djfeddelegrand - Since you mentioned him, what do you think of Fedde le Grand's other stuff? From what you've told us, I wouldn't have expected you'd like him (poppy songs, songs made for dancing only) but if you want more stuff like this, there's a wealth of it out there.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, Threatis and Hammsturabi, I'm sampling those and so far I'm very pleased. Keep 'em coming, please! I've been wondering a bit why I like that kind of music. My own "background" is classic rock. I can see some similarities, though. I think this kind of house shares some qualities with psychedelic, "trippy", chant-like (for lack of better term) rock such as The Doors' "The End" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b26BD5KjH0 ), The Velvet Underground's "Heroin" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xcwt9mSbYE ), and much of early-to-mid Pink Floyd such as "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3R2PgMiTvw ), in which for instance repetition is an important part, but only in order to create the atmosphere that is the true goal of the song. Of course, late Pink Floyd had some "disco"ish elements, and house (I gather) began in the same kind of places as disco did, so that's another connection... Also, I gather that artists such as the Doors and Pink Floyd get sampled a lot by electronic artists. Edit: added youtube links Regression fucked around with this message at 21:15 on Jan 15, 2010 |

Okay, so can anybody recommend me some bmore? I'm trying to get into it, but holy poo poo does Sturgeon's Law apply to this genre - Mostly because of eargrindingly repetitive vocal samples and famous guitar riffs or whatever that I have a very low tolerance for (i'm looking at you nirvana, michael jackson and loving PAPA ROACH remixes). I have, however, fallen in love with a couple of tracks, which I hope can clue you in on what I like. WHAT. Emynd - Reach Out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcV7jMOaQBs DJ Sega - Pinky & The Brain Remix (don't know why it's labeled DJ Dee Square on youtube, my version has the trademark DJ SEGA sound in it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PPmXa9uSsY K-Spin - What Remix Part 5 (as far as I've been able to figure out) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-vu2Xsc04k I have a huge weakness for airhorns. And gunshots. And Lil Jon. YEAH. Somehow he's perfect for this genre. I'm pretty sure he's also featured in another track I dig called the Shake Off by KW Griff, which I heard in a Dirty South Joe mix, but apparently bmore tracks are impossible to find anywhere, so I can't even produce a youtube link to that one. What else might I like?

2 minute previews of the rest of the originals off of 09/17 2007. Amazon has 30 second previews of all the tracks, including the two remixes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQveRmLO7kk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBp3UEcuYjA Definitely not my favorite of his, though still going to buy a copy, come the 25th. I like 3h16 quite a bit more. 3h11 really reminds me of something out of the game Snatcher, which probably isn't too much of a stretch given that this is the first image in the opening credits to that game: Compare that to the cover of 09/17 2007...
