Great, it took 500 years to get rid of the previous dynasty and even then it was just replaced with another one! I guess he thought that if people aren't smart enough to overthrow their goverment, they deserve everything they get? Reinhard answered this himself: After his son was born he said he was only going to be Kaiser if he was the best man for the job. If someone was smart or powerful enough to overthrow him, then so be it.

I first watched LOGH back in the late 90s when I found it in my college anime club's VHS library. Back then, Central Anime had worked on subtitling it - but they ended after 42 episodes. So I had to wait almost a *decade* until they started releasing them as digital fansubs and I could finally watch the end of the series. I should go and watch it all again from the beginning since I forgot some of the plot points due to watching it with big gaps between chunks of the show.

It should never end--or the people who made it need to do something equally good (ie NOT Tytania).

The violence in Tytania is so sanitized. LoGH wasn't afraid to show us what happens to the poor bastards inside of a ship when it gets blown up, people bled profusely when they were shot or hacked apart. In Tytania, someone gets shot like 100 times by laser rifles, and his corpse is in perfect condition

I could deal with all that if it actually went somewhere. It's a normal dumb space anime, OK, but it felt like all we got was an extended intro to several more seasons that aren't coming.

I dropped Tytania because the soldiers in it were so bloody useless - I mean, Stormtroopers would have won against these guys in a day. It's not interesting when the plot is the driver rather than the result of the characters' actions.

Then you take into account that it's on Blu Ray disc. Then you account for the fact that the Japanese like the jack up the price of their series. I mean, I'm trying to wrap my head around how much something like that would cost, and I'm seeing Blu Ray Box 1, which only has episodes 1-26, costing the equivalent of $560. All 110 episodes, you're looking at well over $2000, easy. That's frightening. There is no wonder why they'll never bring this show to the states. Edit: Oh my god. According to this, Box 2 will be $653, and boxes three and four will be over $700. Adding them all up, you're looking at over $2600 for the entire series. If I remember correctly, that's about what the DVD set went for when it came out back around 2001 or 2002. They had a form up on their website to try to gauge American fans' reaction to the show, and said they'd bring it out in America if 1500 people signed up and promised they would buy it. They were going to sell it at a discount in America at a bargain price of only $1,925. They talked about it at the fan panel at Anime Expo in 2003 that I was at; here's a link to a report about that panel: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2003/anime-expo/8 That was the same panel that I first heard about a new show that he was working on - Tytania. Since it took about 5 years to come out I figured it had been cancelled.

DVDs in Japan are so hilariously expensive that one of the reasons why anime takes a while to come to the US is that they don't want Japanese customers to import US DVDs to Japan - because they'd save money on that. I have to ask though - does LoGH really benefit in any way from Blue Ray resolution?

Some of the inbetween animation in some anime series is contracted out to South Korea and China, but they usually won't contract out the keyframe animation - and certainly not to North Korea.

Wonder if it might be lazy writing when extending the length of the battle. It was nice to see more of the behind-the-scenes machinations going on, but since I remember how and why the battle went the way it did, I felt a bit like I did when watching Babylon 5: In the Beginning - no dramatic tension because we all know what happens, and the action scenes and other extra scenes weren't engaging enough to distract from that. I what I enjoyed the most was the part of the episode which was just music - the day/evening of the engagement. That was nice.

You say that despite when Yang's flagship went nose-to-nose with the Krunten, and they showed them exchanging main gun fire, and shields repelling it. The reason that entire carriers went up to the Valkyries is because they failed to give the order to launch the Spartanians soon enough.

I felt like with all this completely understandable praise I, too, would begin watching LoGH. I went through all 110 episodes in about two weeks (I love Uni vacations) and holy poo poo that was the most enjoyable, man-tear jerking, thrilling series I've ever loving seen. Everything was so god drat well done. (big)The whole Reuental Rebellion seemed a tad far-fetched but passable. "The Wulf der Storm is crying" loving drat right he is, poor Mittermeyer you glorious bastard. The scene between Reinhard and Mittermeyer where Reinhard demands that Mittermeyer doesn't die was great, the whole thing was loving fantastic I could go on and on about every episode and how brilliant it was. From the BBW porn in the history episodes to the down-right violent depiction of a man's intestines flowing out of his chest to the awesome bantering on the Alliance side and (hugely minor)Eisenach talking (didn't have this spoilered to begin with but it counts!) brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Now what the gently caress do I watch? There's the Gaiden episodes but what do I do after that? Cry in a ditch I think. Overture of a New Battle was definitely very good. I haven't seen the first episodes in a long time (the TVIV simulwatch), but is there anything really specific that it leaves out that might be considered important? A cursory comparison showed only really the conversation between Jessica and Yang at the end of episode 2. Even that might be seen as more powerful in the movie version. Everything else seemed like it was changed for the better. Looks like my recommendation for order of viewing will now change to the two movies first before the series, and then starting the series at episode 3.
