My Experience
11 years administering and supporting Windows networks. Actually started supporting Netware 5 and transitioned into the world of big blue. I am not a 'jack of all trades master of none', I am a 'jack of most trades master of a few'. Over the last decade I have cut my teeth on pretty much everything you could imagine in a Windows shop including SQL, Exchange, lots of fault tolerant and high availibility work, lots of Cisco, VLANS, lots of wireless, a good bit of WAN connectivity. Currently run a 1300 employee / 16 site organization. Huge list of certifications including all the usual suspects (MCSE, MCITP, MCDBA, etc)

What I'm looking for:
Something similar to what I am doing now. Would prefer a team environment where there are others to work with.

What I am not looking for:
Entry level

Where I am looking
North Louisiana / Southern Arkansas / East Texas

ETA: Job filled from SA. I'll be posting here again if another comes up.

------------------------------------

Job title: System Administrator/Operations
What we want: Someone who can manage our network, hardware, and software. All machines run Debian, our application is PHP talking to MySQL. Must be able to clean up our hardware, manage new HW purchases, maintain Apache and MySQL (running with replication). Load testing, QA experience a definite plus, as is experience configuring and maintaining a virtualization enviroment.

You'll be the sole operations person but will work closely with developers and project managers most days.

Other desired skills: Development experience, knowledge of optimizing a MySQL DB, unit testing (building and automating test suites).

Here's a brief overview of our technical environment:
  • All machines run Debian
  • Application is entirely PHP
  • Apache 2
  • MySQL running with a multi-slave replication configuration
  • Squid acting as a reverse caching proxy
  • Cisco switches
  • Munin and Nagios monitoring software
  • iSCSCI SAN

Required Skills:
  • 5+ years experience configuring and maintaining network hardware/servers
  • Experience gathering requirements, analyzing, and implementing new systems
  • Knowledge of performance testing, analysis, and extrapolation
  • Experience developing and maintaining 100% uptime systems
  • Apache 2 configuration and optimization
  • MySQL 5.x configuration, maintenance, and optimization
  • Excellent communication skills

Our ideal candidate will be dedicated to creating the most reliable and high performing system possible, performing regular testing procedures, and constantly improving their knowledge of new technologies and directions in the industry.

---

Why you'd want to work here: Located in Toronto, Ontario, we're a small company (around 15 people involved day to day, with about 10 of those in the office). We're working on making our system more robust and better matching what's turned out to be its eventual use. There's many interesting challenges left to face that the right candidate should enjoy.

Our focus is simplifying development of media-centric social web sites and managing the resultant media. More info via PM for specifics.

While we're not a high profile company you have definitely heard of our clients and likely been on a few of our sites over the past couple years. I've always found it nice to be able to point to ads/shows on TV and say that they're showing our system.

Please send a PM with any questions or comments.

ETA: Ugh, corporate-sounding "stuff"... I'm trying to add details but drat, ops jobs are pretty straightforward: we have stuff, make it work, make it better, keep it working, screw with the dev team.

Throwing myself out here to see if I get any bites.

My experience: Over 3 years designing, implementing, and maintaining website infrastructure from zero to 1.5 million users based on Apache Tomcat, Linux, and MySQL; as well as build engineering and testing, while simultaneously supporting 20 end-users and the necessary stuff for remote computing, demonstration machines, etc. All the fun stuff you get to do as the only sysadmin at a fledgeling startup. Considerable experience in Python, intermediate in Java. Hold AAS in Network Administration and Security, currently seeking BS in Computer Science.
What I'm looking for: Server support or engineering; or junior development position, with room for advancement. Willing to consider part time if compensation is sufficient and allows me to go to school full-time.
What I'm NOT looking for: Windows Desktop Support in any form.
Where I live: Southeast Wisconsin (Milwaukee area)
Where I'm looking: SE Wisconsin, will consider moving to anywhere near a University of Wisconsin campus.
When I can start: Two to three weeks.
Requirements: Health insurance is a must. Education reimbursement would be great!
Can be reached via: PM

I realize in advance that having ZERO job experience is going to make this a one in a million shot, but considering the job market, I'm trying everywhere. Any responses (or suggestions/referrals to a place that does need an entry-level guy) appreciated.

My experience:
Experience with small-scale projects in Java, Python, LISP, Prolog, C, and dabblings in a few web areas (PHP, JSP, and the like). Familiarity with Linux and large knowledge of most flavors of Windows.

In May, I will graduate from George Mason University with a Bachelor's in Computer Science.

What I'm looking for:
An entry-level job/internship. I would be perfectly happy at a help desk job where I could spend my time helping people and learning new things, which are my two favorite things to do.

What I am not looking for:
A pure coding position, if only because I feel I'm not ready or qualified for one. I *can* code, but I don't have a portfolio to speak of, and I have a "breadth not depth" level of knowledge of specific languages.

Where I am looking:
Anywhere in the DC Metro area would be the easiest, as I live in Fairfax, Virginia, but I'm not entirely against relocating. I'm just not sure about affording it.

When I can start:
If the meet can be worked around, May 9, otherwise, June 14.

Requirements:
As long as you can beat the $9.70/hour I make at my retail job, I'm happy. An environment that encourages learning on the job rather than knowing everything before you arrive would be a plus.

I wear my sunglasses at night.
Can anybody with experience dealing with recruiters explain to me what to expect and/or watch out for? Somebody from TAC Worldwide contacted me earlier this week about a job posting, and after speaking with the lady on the phone I've found that this is potentially a phenomenal opportunity. The company the position is with is very well respected in the area and has amazing benefits*, and based on the description of the job it doesn't feel like one where I would be getting in too far over my head like most of the others I've been applying for anyway.

My biggest questions right now (which I haven't had a chance to ask yet) are, how does contract to hire typically work? If I work there for the 3 months and don't gently caress up, they hire me on full time? How do benefits work during this 3 month period? Are there none?

Here's what's happened so far:
Day 1: Recruiter emails me vague job info, asks for an updated copy of my resume and a few sentences explaining why I would be a good fit. I reply same day.
Day 2: Recruiter calls me, gives me the name of the company the position is with, goes back over the requirements, asks again about my experience, seems generally happy, asks me to confirm my contact info to pass on to the company.

I'm guessing the next step is the company reviewing my resume and then hopefully calling me, but I'm not sure, since I've never dealt with recruiters before. I also don't know how long this process typically takes, and waiting for a phone call that may never come is nerve wracking. Should I followup with the recruiter after a period of time if I don't hear anything, or just sit tight and wait?

Typically, contract to hire is a 3-month 'try before you buy' where you get paid hourly rather than salary, and usually don't get benefits. Recruiters I have spoken to brag about a 99.9% placement rate with contract to hire, and the line is that you won't not get hired unless you dramatically gently caress up. YMMV, of course.

This seems pretty in line with what the recruiter told me, since she specifically asked me what hourly rate I was looking for. Does this also mean that, should the company decide to hire me, I'll have to negotiate a pay rate all over again?

I have limited experience (only done contract to hire once), but all the permanent salary negotiation then came after I had been working contract for a while. They offered me a full time position with a 20-30% pay cut (saying that contractors generally make more), which I declined. I stayed on contract while they tried to figure out what they wanted to do, and ended up finding a new job after a few months because I got the feeling it wasn't really going anywhere.

Depending on the recruiter, if they're from a big recruiting agency, they should generally have benefits you can purchase in that interim period.

I'm all about meeting girls. I'm all about meeting guys.
Technical recruiters are generally ruthless, very annoying, and horrible people. That said, there are a few good ones, so I hope you get one.

More than likely, your email address landed on their list and you were just cold called/emailed. They do it all the time.

While a recruiter may say they have your best interests in mind, they generally don't. They get a huge commission for placement (with a salary position, I'm not sure how contract-to-hire or hourly works). So they'll say, "the more you make, the more I make!"

But there's more to that than meets the eyes. Say a company wants to hire a developer, so they hire a recruiting firm, which places an ad on the common sites. The recruiter finds 5 people good for the job, and each tells them the same thing. Now, there's a good chance one of those 5 people gets hired, and the recruiter doesn't care which, just that at least one of them gets hired.

Also, say they get 25% commission of your first year's salary. So they say the more you get paid, the more they get paid. Of course, its true, but they're more concerned about getting some commission over none.

Say the job offers you $75,000, but you really, really want $80,000. The recruiter will do everything to get you to accept the $75k, because that's $18,750 in commission, whereas if you hold out for the $80,000, that's $20,000 commission for them. So, the extra $5k a year for you isn't that much more in commission for them, and getting $18,750 in commission is much more than getting $0.

Also, *always* send your resume in PDF format. Refuse to send it in Word. Technical recruiters are known for altering resumes to fit the job description better. While PDF's can be edited, it's harder than a regular Word doc.

I know there are a few recruiters around here, and I bet they're pretty good, but in general, I dislike technical recruiters, and most of my tech friends do as well.

I wish I had known that, because I got all excited when the recruiter said the estimate I gave for how much I wanted to make sounded good. I guess I should have aimed higher.

One of the questions the recruiter asked was if I had experience with Windows 2000 (my resume lists 2003 and 2008), and I said yes, so she asked if she could edit that part to say 2000-2008 instead. So I guess I can confirm this.

I'm a little bit more uneasy about this now, but it's still a job with a good company with good benefits if I land it full time, so I'm not going to lose all hope just yet. Hell, I haven't even spoken with anybody there yet, so all of this worrying may be for nothing, but at least now I have a better idea of what I'm getting into. Thanks for the replies.

Just to clarify, the ones trying to lowball was the company I was working for, not the recruiting agency. The recruiting agency wasn't involved at all, but they usually do get a lump sum for contract buyouts (which could have been where that 20-30% went to).

Contractors are typically paid more because their taxation rate is much higher.. before you dismiss a 'lower' salary, take that into consideration.

I've never run into anyone who was 1099ed as a contract to hire, it's just a matter of who is cutting your paycheck.

Generally I know we usually pay our contract to hire professionals less than what they made through the contractor firm because we're paying vacation, benefits, leave, cell phone, etc.

Your cash might go down, but overall compensation is higher.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Unless they are expecting you to relocate across the country for 3 months so that you might almost maybe get a full time job, just take the hourly rate, and keep looking. You can always quit if it sucks.
