I know that this thread is called the "house/etc." thread, but I was wondering if there is a...well, real house thread - not to impune upon the musicality of this thread by any means, there's some good stuff in here but a lot of it's sort of electro-poppy 2007-present electronica and electro stuff (ed banger, boyz noize, van she etc blah blah) which I love and all but I've clicked around and haven't found anything devoted to the chicago stuff slash funky french touchy touchy stuff etc. Jack had a groove, man. If there is such a thread could someone direct me to it. kak kalal to contribute Paul Johnson - She Got Me On http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6dV9AKl9_k Modjo - What I Mean (Aloud remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCsLS1hAPF8 Le Knight Club - Cherie D'Amoure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNetiEMSbNI Paul Johnson - Feel My Mothafuckin' Bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrutLOI5wfQ

I've been lurking in this thread since the beginning, been enlightened to a loooooot of good stuff, learned about some gigs, and even went to some of these gigs (Ed Banger 7th, going to HardNYC, the upcoming Designer Drugs show). The one thing that I've seen discussed but always always always at a very high level is actually creating your own mixes or sets. Is there any advice you guys could throw out for someone looking to get into mixing and DJing? At a very, very basic level to start and then I'll work my own way up, of course...

I stumbled upon a DJ(s?) named Felguk today, I'm surprised I haven't heard more of his stuff in this thread. I'm loving these tracks. It was a wicked show, she played a killer set and I'd love the tracklist. If you missed it, you really missed out. Firaga fucked around with this message at 05:34 on Mar 2, 2010 |

Stuntastic posted:Is there any advice you guys could throw out for someone looking to get into mixing and DJing? At a very, very basic level to start and then I'll work my own way up, of course... I suggest you get this book: http://www.amazon.com/How-DJ-Right-Science-Playing/dp/0802139957/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267509614&sr=8-1 I have it and it covers almost everything you're asking. But the tl;dr is: Dance music uses a 4/4 form with a kick every beat (usually) so you learn to use vinyl or software to match two tracks together (easy because of the similar beat structure) you then experiment with layering tracks on top of each other and progressing one track to the next. Doing this at home is one thing, doing it in front of hundreds or thousands of people is another. Get a copy of Virtual DJ. Do a search on google. Almost every idiot in every club in the world uses this program or some version of the same concept. (Two virtual decks using .mp3 etc.) They make dedicated hardware that does all the same things but it is expensive and not worth it to learn on day 1. The next easy thing you can do is get a small preamp off ebay ($20 shipped) and get a timecoded vinyl ($20) and hook that into virtual dj and then you can be scratchy mcscratch, but in reality it is nice to get a "grab" on your tracks sometimes. Then you need to convince your friends you're good enough to play for them, then a club owner, then a record label. I did not cover production at all or other mixing methods but this is a good starting point. Also this is a topic that has been covered a lot so keeeeeeeeeeeep readingggggggggg. Last comment is that TIME TIME TIME is the most important part of this (or anything you're serious about) you need to spend a long time practicing to get anywhere with this stuff because the next guy just spent 500 hours in his basement doing way harder stuff.

It's amazing the number of killer relatively unknown tracks you'll find on there if you listen to it long enough. I recommend switching between that and the tech house, tribal house, funky house, breaks, and club sounds stations since there's of course also tons of filler.

My friend whos not into electronic music at all showed me DI FM a few weeks ago. My mind was blown. For anyone that doesn't know, http://www.di.fm/ is a free (pay for better quality) internet radio for electronic music. There is tons of filler but you can catch some wicked sets sometimes. And the best part is you can actually go on the forums and find the set and track lists really easily.

For what it's worth, Kanye doing "Stronger" was a better hip hop / EDM crossover, and that was done years before.
