I didn't see it mentioned but I would highly recommend giving it a watch: The Thriller in Manila I know almost next to nothing about boxing but this didn't stop this film from being absolutely fascinating. I'm not sure exactly how accurate it is, but Ali really, really comes across as a complete dick and Frazier as just the saddest, most bitter old man. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NANLS0tn14M

Throwing in one more: Carrier, a nuanced and well rounded documentary about life on the aircraft carrier Nimitz: onship and off, officers and enlisted, the crew and their families. I haven't seen it all, but have been surprised at how impactful the parts I've seen have been. And this one is all available online: http://www.pbs.org/weta/carrier/full_episodes.htm

This isn't a documentary so much as it's a 20 minute flash video with a woman speaking in the broadest possible loving terms for modern consumerism. No experts, to studies cited, just her running her mouth off about "toxins" and how Americans work to much and blah blah blah. It's a great little affirmation piece for people already involved in the "green" movement, but there isn't much use for the vid outside of that. She speaks exactly hoe you might imagine someone with a graduate degree in "City and Regional Planning" would about the environment, economics, and international commerce: not terribly well.

I mean, following your instructions I haven't read anything about the case, so I don't really know anything about it, but I do find it odd that they're recording everything that happens. And, if it's really what's going on, what's the backstory? Did they simply approach him and go "so... mind if we record your life while you're accused of 1st degree murder?" By far the best crime/courtroom documentary I have ever seen. Phyzzle is right, do not read anything about this case prior to watching the series. I am now trying to track down Jean-Xavier de Lestrade's other films, especially Murder on a Sunday Morning Content: Dead in the Water - The Sinking of the USS Liberty http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3319663041501647311 During the Six-Day War, Israel attacked and nearly sank the USS Liberty belonging to its closest ally, the USA. Thirty-four American servicemen were killed in the two-hour assault by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats. Israel claimed that the whole affair had been a tragic accident based on mistaken identification of the ship. The American government accepted the explanation. For more than 30 years many people have disbelieved the official explanation but have been unable to rebut it convincingly. Now, Dead in the Water uses startling new evidence to reveal the truth behind the seemingly inexplicable attack. The film combines dramatic reconstruction of the events, with new access to former officers in the US and Israeli armed forces and intelligence services who have decided to give their own version of events. Interviews include President Lyndon Johnson's Secretary of Defence Robert McNamara, former head of the Israeli navy Admiral Shlomo Errell and members of the USS Liberty crew.

When I then read the description of The Staircase I even thought to myself 'I wonder if that's similar', good to know it's by the same guy. You really must find it, it's excellent. I caught it at 2am on Channel 4 in the UK by accident (luckily from the beginning) and throughout the whole thing you're left thinking : Is this kid an excellent liar, or is this police force this messed up? I caught RiP - A Remix Manifesto on screener recently, I think it streams for free in the US tho. What I thought was just going to be a piece about the mashup genre actually turns into a pretty good tale about copyrights and intellectual property. Good production values too. I also helped get Until The Light Takes Us shown in a small arts theatre over here. It's not brilliant, but it's probably the best look into the early Norwegian black metal scene that led to church burnings and murders. Lots of facetime with Varg 'Count Grishnackh' Vikernes of Burzum, famous for murdering bandmate 'Euronymous' and serving 24 years in prison for it.

Can I request Robert Hendrickson's 1973 documentary on Charles Manson and the family? It's a great doc. The best on the subject by far. It's basically a spliced up collection of Spahn Ranch home movies with interviews with those involved, and a soundtrack by former members of the 'family.' I was stupid enough to google this guy's name when I was watching part 3 or 4, because I wanted to see if this was really him. Needless to say that the same page that had the picture mentioned the verdict. I hated the assistant to the DA. That woman not only had an obnoxious accent and an annoying attitude, she also dressed as if she was going to do some square dance the day the verdict was read. Regarding the case itself, I also got the impression that the filmmaker was trying to make Michael Peterson look innocent, which I thought was not very objective. I would have been surprised by the verdict, had I now known it in advance, because, at least based on what they show in the documentary, specially the blow-poke, they didn't know what the murder weapon was, and the injuries were not consistent with an attack. EDIT: This may surprise some, specially based on this avatar I got, but I was disgusted to see how the DA's office tried to use bisexuality as a tool to get a conviction. The whole scene about "THEY WERE GOIN' DO ANAL SEX! THIS IS HARDCOOWR POOWRN!" was just sad. Redrum and Coke fucked around with this message at 07:14 on Mar 30, 2010 |
