Hitler's Britain
An interesting documentary on the theoretical Nazi invasion of Britain had the Battle of Britain been lost. This rolls two parts together into one hour and a half program. The first is a look at it from a general perspective and goes into some conjecture that really isn't based in anything. Quite frankly I found it a little bit sensationalist by the time it was proposing a U.S.-Nazi cold war. However, the second part detailing the planned British Resistance that Churchill had begun preparing when things were looking bleak was an excellent piece with a lot of interviews from people who had previously not talked about it.

You can find it on Hulu: Hitler's Britain

Very interesting. While it is definitely one-sided, it gives a different view of Walt Disney's business practices than what we usually see. This time from the point-of-view of the people who actually made the films. Rather than lurid tales of Walt Disney's private life, it is a really insightful look at the way Walt Disney ran his studio and I highly recommend it.

This is another film by the awesome Werner Herzog who also directed Grizzly Man.
In the film he goes to Antarctica, curious to meet people who willingly move down there rather than focusing on the animals. Herzog explains that he "hates nature documentaries." Fascinating look at everyday life in Antarctica but also with shots of the landscape and wildlife that make Antarctica look alien, rather than boring as I had expected.

This movie right here is what really got me into the whole documentary scene a couple years ago. It fascinated me to watch how the director really took me for a fantastic voyage to this place at the bottom of the world.

The South American machinist is probably one of the most concussive moments for me. To try and understand how this man must view the world, always being prepared to drop everything and leave with nothing but a duffel.

The UK goons are holding out on us US goons. There are two very awesome documentary series on BBC right now: Richard Hammonds Invisible Worlds and Wonders of the Solar System (with Brian Cox).

Wonders of the Solar System is described as: "Professor Brian Cox visits some of the most stunning locations on earth to describe how the laws of nature have carved natural wonders across the solar system."

Invisible Worlds is about showing off cool stuff we now are able to notice thanks to modern technology.

First episode of Wonders of the Solar System, about the sun: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rf172/hd/Wonders_of_the_Solar_System_Empire_of_the_Sun/
The 2nd episode is about how the order of the solar system formed out of chaotic systems, the 3rd about atmospheres, and the 4th is on geologic activity.

First episode of Invisible Worlds, about things that happen really fast (High speed video): http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rmrln/hd/Richard_Hammonds_Invisible_Worlds_Speed_Limits/
The second episode is about non-visible light and the 3rd is about the microscopic world.

If your in the US you can watch iPlayer with The Onion Router. Google it.

I think Louis Theroux misses that mark most of the time. I've seen the Nazis, the most hated family in America and the Thai brides docs and it just seems like he misses a lot of good opportunities to ask these people WHY these movements proliferate and learn about them. Instead, he asks Fred Phelps, "Do you really believe this?"

Yes, Louis he really does. Move on to some real investigative journalism.

I think it was the Thai brides doc that pissed me off the mot. He just came off like such a condescending rear end in a top hat to these guys and women who are pretty desperate and seeking comfort in a not-conventional-not-ideal system. Just because it wasn't something he would do, everything is wrong with it.

Yeah, I don't think he's awesome. He rubs me the wrong way.

Well, the problem with his documentaries, especially the ones where he meets the worst of the worst, is that he really can't be too confrontational, because his front of naivety is what allows him to get so close to the people in the first place. I think the Nazi one also contains a scene where he's eventually chased off by a bunch of guys because he wouldn't reveal whether he was Jewish or not. While that bit did a good job at revealing their hypocrisy, if he did stuff like that all the time, people wouldn't let him come into their homes.

The thing is: He's not going to convince people like that of anything, and if he digs deeper into the "why are you doing this?" question, he's in danger of allowing them to shut themselves off or throw him out. What his style does allow is to show in what ways people with strange or disgusting worldviews live a normal everyday life, and at what point this starts to differ from the norm. I think he usually does a good job at letting the contradictions reveal themselves.

By the way, I saw parts of an interview with Louis recently, and he talks about how in his early works, he sometimes overdid his nerdy, naive persona, while he feels like he's acting more natural in more recent series. I haven't seen enough of his films to see the effects of this, but it's an interesting point.

You are the first crack in the sheer face of god. From you it will spread.
I came to cross-post that Louis Theroux documentary, but someone beat me to it. I'm about halfway through it. This is making me sad and angry in the same way as Jesus Camp did, but it's so much worse with this one.

So far, I don't have a problem with Theroux's style. He doesn't need to do much of anything other than be there with a camera to show what these people are all about. Halfway through, there is a hilarious image that encapsulates the whole documentary. The functioning leader of the group is standing there picketing a place, holding a stack of hosed up signs, and Theroux calls it all "weird." She calls him out and tries to justify how what they are doing is not "weird." I have never seen so much cognitive dissonance in one moment. But the fact that he says it in defense of the upbringing of some poor little kid who is being indoctrinated ("you're grooming him into the weird behavior that is characteristic of your group.") makes me surprised some dumb cracker in this group doesn't punch him. This one isn't as scary as the Nazi one, I'm sure, but there are some heated moments that show Theroux's chutzpah.

And I think "do you really believe this" is a valid enough question to ask the pastor himself. There is no loving way the guy at the top believes all of the bullshit he is spoon-feeding to his flock. He clearly hates gay folks, and it would have been satisfying to hear him just admit that all his bullshit is just an excuse to spew hate speech because the thought of buttsecks makes him feel funny. I am certain that is all it is to him, if not a few other members. He doesn't have indoctrination as an excuse like most of the rest.

Louis Theroux can come across as being incredibly naive or extremely smug depending on how you go into his documentaries. His early ones are more focused on off-the-wall subjects (being brought shooting aliens with plastic guns with UFO-hunters, watching gay-for-pay being shot etc). There's one episode where he brings to New York a bunch of people he met and it's interesting to say the least. One guy was channeling some alien super being and everyone else couldn't stop smirking, while in the other room the Christian fundamentalist (who found a Phone-for-Jesus company) sang hymns to thwart Satan from the apartment.

If you're into nice Theroux, the American survivalist episode and the Dharma episode has him bonding with the people he meet. If you hate smug Theroux, you'll love the Pro Wrestling episode where he asked a coach if the whole thing's an act and gets forced to exercise so hard that he pukes off camera twice.

The newer Theroux are much more darker though, like the frankly shocking The City Addicted to Crystal Meth (It's Fresno). It's all on youtube and you can start here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4IJzVW6qK4

This is kind of a change, but I believe I've found the WORST documentary ever made... Bad Cops Vol 1. That's a Netflix online viewing link, I don't know if there are any free versions of it online.

Basically some guys took a bunch of helicopter police chase footage and superimposed their own voices (plus a really fake helicopter sound) giving commentary on stuff that's obviously not happening on screen. Like, the cops have taken down a suspect and are cuffing him, and the voice-overs are going on and on about how they're kicking him and beating him with flashlights, even though nothing of the sort is happening on screen.

The hilarity is in how the directors seriously expected people to believe they were actually on scene commenting on this stuff, and how misleading and skewed the commentary is, especially when there's never a shred of context for any of the chases. I think it's a great party video, put it on and heckle it.

Oh, and despite the name, there's no Vol. 2.

Wow that really was heartbreaking. She talks just like a little girl yet the things she says are so profound and sad. She was completely broken at that point and she knew it. Have to respect her for allowing somebody to film her so closely, since I imagine it raised a lot of awareness when it was aired. What shocked me is that she weighs half as much as me, and I'm a very small person. It's seriously hard to take in the fact she weighed just 4 stone and was still alive.
You probably should edit to add a warning that it has pretty graphic scenes of her purging. I kind of expected it but I didn't think they'd actually show her doing it, and it freaked me out as I'm very emetophobic.
I wish she could have got help before it was too late for her. It's such a sad story. Just one of many. Hopefully her story will help to save a few lives by raising awareness and shocking people into getting treatment.

I also watched 'Dear Zachary' and the one about the drug addicts in Wales, all on the same day. It was a bad idea, I pretty much used up a year's worth of sadness in just a few hours :(
