It is a documentary following a guy as he backpacks around the world for a year, i saw this film just before i left for my own backpacking trip and it's amazing how accurate it is and how he describes the emotions you go through.

If anyone has any interest in Travelling/Backpacking then this is a must see film.
I bought the DVD for the hostel i worked in and everyone who watched it loved it.

If anyone can find it on the net id love to see it again

PBS has a miniseries called The Fifty Years War and it's a rather fantastic compendium of everything that happened from the end of WW2 and on including some very insider perspectives and famous stories told by people who were directly involved.

I'm pretty sure it was a 6 part Frontline production. It doesn't have too much from very recent times but suffice it to say, one can imagine things aren't very different from where it leaves off.

Just wanted to reiterate the love for "Paradise Lost" about the West Memphis 3. It's not available online but it is the best crime documentary I've ever seen. The plot/characters involved are incredible and uncanny, the story is gripping, and the human emotion is heat-breaking. Basically three young boys are murdered in most brutal fashion in West Memphis and three local teen troublemakers are accused. The filmmakers had unprecedented courtroom access. Great twists and a must-see.

I would also say The Bridge was quite good, but not as depressing as I thought a movie about suicide would be. dear Zachary, on the other hand, has me really disturbed and I'm only 5 minutes into it.

It's about "host boys" working in Osaka. These guys are basically male geishas who entertain women in clubs, manipulating them into spending stupefying amounts of money. I remember one woman saying that she's dropped $15K in a month, or something ridiculous like that. The host boys play all kinds of mind games with the women, tricking them into falling in love -- they're emotional prostitutes. And the kicker is that most of their female clients are actual prostitutes, who should know how the game works and still keep coming back. Everyone in this film is totally broken in one way or another, but it's fascinating.

The World at War

http://www.youtube.com/user/damoosebelly

quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_at_War
The World at War is a 26-episode British television documentary series on World War II and the events immediately before and after it. It was produced by Jeremy Isaacs, narrated by Laurence Olivier, and has a score composed by Carl Davis. A book, The World at War, was written by Mark Arnold-Forster to accompany it.

The series, which made use of rare colour film footage, was commissioned by Thames Television during 1969. Such was the extent of its research, it took four years to produce at a cost of 900,000 (2009 equivalent: 11.4 million[1]). At the time, this was a record for a British television series. It was first shown during 1973, on ITV.

Apologies it it's already been posted.

The Ascent of Man http://www.amazon.com/Ascent-Man-5-set/dp/B000NDI3SK was a big BBC series a while back which was narrated by Jacob Bronowski. It really is a history of drat near everything. It started with the evolution of man from apes (which is dated considering newer discoveries) and went all the way through greek and islamic history and onward. It's about the development of human traits and society. What gets me is that there are long shots of Bronowski just talking to you at the top of some mountain or at some ruin and you'd think that would be boring but the man is awesome. My favorite was episode 4 (of 13) called "The Music of the Spheres."

There's also a not so region or racially specific difference between women and men made a point of in that documentary. Gigolo were giving the social and emotional companionship women internationally complain about not getting, and whores in return were loaning physical companionship to get the love and appreciation from the male prostitutes later.

Men's ears and hearts should be more available and women need to find healthier relationships because it's not as though there are not men out there that appreciate women, but they are all way too boring for the likes of most chicks. Basically, that entire documentary is one about alcoholics, which I used to be, and we loving crave excitement.

Back in business
I have been watching a lot of Cold Case/Missing Persons/Child Abduction releated documentaries lately, but this one is loving haunting me. It's got a lot of the old standards; innocent young girl abducted, raped and murdered, inept police investigation and inability to find the main suspect but it's her mother that I cannot get over.

Over the years, she has almost completely removed herself from the crime and investigation to solely focus on preserving the memory of her daughter. She goes through an archive of pictures, paintings, crafts and audio and video tapes. If you didn't know better, you would assume it's just a proud parent reminincing about her now-adult daughter as she preparers to get married or have children of her own. The interview with the former roommate of Dennis Howe is loving creepy as well, in a "I know something but I'm not talking" kind of way.

Sharin'
http://vimeo.com/10196540

A documentary about the brutal 1983 murder of Sharin' Morningstar Keenan in Toronto, Canada. Sharin Morningstar Keenan disappeared around 4 pm from Sibelius Park in Toronto's Annex area on January 23rd 1983. She was found dead nine days later in a rooming house on Brunswick Avenue very close to the park. A man eventually identified as Dennis Melvyn Howe (DOB Sept 26, 1940) was named the perpetrator by police. Since then, Howe has been on the run and Sharins murder has become one of Canadas most iconic child tragedies.

For the first time ever, Sharins mother Lynda has come forward to collaborate on the case, working exclusively with CBC filmmaker David Ridgen. Together they build a never before seen portrait of Sharin using the art, writing, and photographs she left behind. And in the process, they uncover new and surprising information about the case, prime suspect Dennis Howe, and about the people who knew Howe that could aid in his capture.

Bomb Harvest
http://www.tvo.org/TVO/WebObjects/TVO.woa?videoid?71244422001

Laos - may be the most bombed country per capita on the planet. Australian bomb disposal specialist Laith Stevens has to train a new young "big bomb" team to deal with bombs left from the US "Secret War", but meanwhile, the local children are out hunting for bomb scrap metal. This timely story is terrifying and yet filled with eccentric characters and moments of humour, vividly depicting the consequences of war and the incredible bravery of those trying to clear up the mess.

When Borat Came to Town
http://www.tvo.org/TVO/WebObjects/TVO.woa?videoid?65784153001

When Borat Came To Town is a film about a small village in a big universe. A gypsy village is suddenly confronted with huge dilemmas after they are portrayed as backward people from Kazakhstan in the film Borat. Seventeen year old Carmen sees the people around her change and knows her future will change dramatically as well. She grapples with allegiance to family and tradition as she tries to be true to her own dreams.

The Tiger Next Door
http://www.tvo.org/TVO/WebObjects/TVO.woa?videoid?64397832001

The film lends a fascinating glimpse into a dangerous North American hobby and offers a compelling, thought-provoking meditation on the perennial human desire to master what is wild and the crucial ethical issues this reveals. As populations of tigers in the wilds of Asia and India dwindle dangerously close to extinction, thousands of highly inbred "American" tigers are being kept and bred by private individuals in the North America. The phenomenon is so extensive that experts now believe there are more tigers in private captivity in the U.S. than there are in the wild in the world. This one-hour, character driven documentary follows the story of one man who has been keeping, breeding, and selling Bengal tigers from his backyard for over fifteen years.

For the down-and-out residents of Edmonton's grim and unforgiving inner city, the AI Trading pawnshop is the bank of the poor. And pawnbroker David Woolfson, a banker of last resort. "I run a legitimate business. I help people who are desperate and I make money off them. Sure I do," says Woolfson. "My wife is not happy about the business I'm in. She says I'm making money from the poor." Broke. a complex, powerful cinma vrit story of the daily life of an inner city pawn shop.

Cat Ladies
http://www.tvo.org/TVO/WebObjects/TVO.woa?videoid?65958616001

Cat Ladies is a verite documentary that pierces the intimate world of the "cat lady" - women who give and seek love in their world with their cats. Four different women who have been slapped with the same label: "The Crazy Cat Lady". Through intimate access with Diane, Margot, Sigi and Jenny, we create a sensitive and emotionally honest portrait of women whose lives and self-worth have become intractably linked to cats. Some of these women have only a few cats; others share their small homes with hundreds. They've created an alternative society for themselves that they share with their feline companions. It's not however, the number of cats they possess that defines them, but rather their struggle to find acceptance and value in a society that rejects them. A figure of fun, they're easily dismissed but these women deal with the issues that all of us face to some degree - rejection, loss and loneliness.

A Hard Name
http://www.tvo.org/TVO/WebObjects/TVO.woa?videoid?65623093001

Raw and intimate interviews with ex-convicts who come across as the most gentle souls you could ever meet-apart from the stabbings and armed robberies-talk about their lives in prison and their struggles to adapt to life on the outside. In jail, the guards and the system try to break them down. To survive, they harden their spirit and live by the prison code: don't make eye contact, don't rat on your fellow convicts, don't talk to the guards, don't be an rear end in a top hat. After 40 years in prison, never having held a job, most find life out of prison harder than life in it. The hardness they've cultivated to survive as convicts crumbles as they reveal the horrific tales of abuse that set the wheels in motion for some very tough lives.

Seriously, its like watching an episode of Sesame Street. The worst part of it all is that this is supposed to be Attenborough's swan song of nature film narration and nearly all of the US is missing out on the experience.

The Life series with Attenborough, it is amazing, they also have a 10+ minute section at the end of each episode about the lengths some of these film makers went to to get the shots they did. Oprah, I have nothing against her, but holy crap, Attenborough. No one in the present world can top his narration. And for me, that is worth the extra effort and money to acquire his versions of this amazing documentary.

I don't care if it costs more, or an rear end load, the only version of Life I will watch is that which D. Attenborough narrates. It is worth it. I have a feeling this will be his last piece, his swan song, and to me, a nature lover, nothing will surpass this. He is simply the man.
