Just wanted to reiterate the love for "Paradise Lost" about the West Memphis 3. It's not available online but it is the best crime documentary I've ever seen. The plot/characters involved are incredible and uncanny, the story is gripping, and the human emotion is heat-breaking. Basically three young boys are murdered in most brutal fashion in West Memphis and three local teen troublemakers are accused. The filmmakers had unprecedented courtroom access. Great twists and a must-see. I would also say The Bridge was quite good, but not as depressing as I thought a movie about suicide would be. dear Zachary, on the other hand, has me really disturbed and I'm only 5 minutes into it.

I caught The Great Happiness Space recently and was pretty amazed. It's on Netflix instant view. http://www.thegreathappinessspace.com/ It's about "host boys" working in Osaka. These guys are basically male geishas who entertain women in clubs, manipulating them into spending stupefying amounts of money. I remember one woman saying that she's dropped $15K in a month, or something ridiculous like that. The host boys play all kinds of mind games with the women, tricking them into falling in love -- they're emotional prostitutes. And the kicker is that most of their female clients are actual prostitutes, who should know how the game works and still keep coming back. The Ascent of Man http://www.amazon.com/Ascent-Man-5-set/dp/B000NDI3SK was a big BBC series a while back which was narrated by Jacob Bronowski. It really is a history of drat near everything. It started with the evolution of man from apes (which is dated considering newer discoveries) and went all the way through greek and islamic history and onward. It's about the development of human traits and society. What gets me is that there are long shots of Bronowski just talking to you at the top of some mountain or at some ruin and you'd think that would be boring but the man is awesome. My favorite was episode 4 (of 13) called "The Music of the Spheres." I have been watching a lot of Cold Case/Missing Persons/Child Abduction releated documentaries lately, but this one is loving haunting me. It's got a lot of the old standards; innocent young girl abducted, raped and murdered, inept police investigation and inability to find the main suspect but it's her mother that I cannot get over. Over the years, she has almost completely removed herself from the crime and investigation to solely focus on preserving the memory of her daughter. She goes through an archive of pictures, paintings, crafts and audio and video tapes. If you didn't know better, you would assume it's just a proud parent reminincing about her now-adult daughter as she preparers to get married or have children of her own. The interview with the former roommate of Dennis Howe is loving creepy as well, in a "I know something but I'm not talking" kind of way. That is awesome. I didn't mind Sigourney Weaver, but I've had to stop watching Life on TV because Oprah is so loving awful at narrating. I'm not even staunchly pro- or anti-Oprah, I was willing to give her a chance, but I had no idea it was possible to suck the joy out of nature television. Somehow, with her dry monotonous narration, she's done it.

I love this thread. I have pretty much stopped watching TV and just watching documentaries at this point. I have a feeling this will be his last piece, his swan song, and to me, a nature lover, nothing will surpass this. He is simply the man.

I have a feeling they only change the narrators over here simply because Oprah and Weaver are bigger names in the US and they feel like it's likely to draw in a bigger audience, and they're probably right.
