Helped my little brother out with his B5 A4 today, it seems he had some strange noises coming from his transmission after he changed his oil. Naturally first thing I took a look at was his oil level out of curiosity and it was way over the max line. Asked him to point out the drain plug he took out and of course it was the transmission fluid. Not only did he drain his transmission fluid and add oil though, but he also only added 3 quarts and did not check the dipstick. He apparently thought it only took 3 quarts and couldn't be bothered to look it up. Hopefully he didn't cause any damage driving back and forth to school like that, guess we'll find out.

Put a redneck cold-air intake on my Interceptor. It's a pretty popular mod over on Crownvic.net. The airbox has a rather restrictive-looking little snorkel that sticks out behind the headlight; you pull that out and replace it with a plastic cup with the bottom cut out. I didn't think to take any pics, so here's the ones that inspired me, rehosted on waffle. I used a red cup with my company logo on it I stole from the office -- went to two dollar stores and a grocery store, and nobody had the proper cup -- but you can see how it should let in a bit more air than the stock piece: I, too, painted mine with black vinyl dye, for a stock look, and made nice little fillets of caulk on all the edges to reduce turbulence. It's no K&N or Marauder intake, but it should help a little, right? Even if it doesn't add power, it was a fun and free excuse to get under the hood and personalize the new car.

I was reading up on mods for the '96 Buick Roadmaster I was considering before getting the Vic -- it has the Corvette LT1, but goofy power-robbing intake silencers because it's a luxury car. There are detailed instructions on the Buick-driver forums on how to replace the one inline silencer with a few specific bits of sewer pipe, Home Depot SKUs given, and the other one that sits on top of the engine, you remove and plug the hole with a hockey puck or peanut butter jar lid (which just happen to be the exact size of the hole). The thread even devolved into complaining about Arlington, TX (the location of the Roadmaster factory) not having a hockey team, which would give it an extra touch of ... something, I guess. The Dallas pro baseball and football clubs are based in Arlington, but the Stars (and Mavs, but nobody cares about hoops) play in Dallas proper. The actual-effort performance intake mod for my Crown Vic is far less nerdy, and somewhat disappointing -- you just replace the intake piping and MAF sensor with parts from the '03 Mercury Marauder, and reprogram the ECU to talk to the new bigger MAF. The rear brakes poo poo themselves on my Prelude yesterday. Everything seemed good, and then as I was pulling out of the work parking lot, I heard horrible squealing coming from the rear. I checked it out, and the pads on the passenger side rear corner only were ground down to metal. A couple years back, I had replaced only the pads on that corner (caliper on other side was frozen at the time, was replaced a while ago) but the car has gone probably less than 10k since then. I've been driving around with metal-on-metal squealing since yesterday afternoon. Anyway, I spent lunch today driving to parts stores and buying new pads and rotors, then did the rear brakes in the dark once I got home. Everything went OK I guess - one rotor was frozen on, and had to be hammered off at 10:30pm (sorry neighbors) and a seized bolt holding some sort of dust shield on over the E-brake mechanism snapped when I tried to remove it. Other than that, no major issues. Welp, so much for doing my taxes on time. Yeah, I haven't done them yet. That was going to be today's after-work project until my brakes decided to, uh, break. I'll be up late doing that tonight, I guess.

Today I changed over to my summer wheels then took it for a test drive. It was suddenly driving terribly, always veering over to one side or the other, generally behaving badly... oh wait... air. Yup, forgot to even check the air pressure on them, they were all pretty much flat. Then drove around looking for a garage with an air compressor. Took it home tried the tires again, front right one was back to how it was when I put it on. Either the man at the garage screwed up or I have a leak... yay.

Topped it up with coolant again, took it for a drive and for the first time in two weeks of fighting with it got back with coolant still in the expansion tank. Clearly washing the thing has improved its mood.

I've been slowly giving my Yaris little improvements here and there, so here's a little photo summary of what i've been doing this past year because it really doesn't deserve a whole thread. Feel free to make fun of my egg car. Punching holes into a perfectly good car and mounting a TRD Rally Spoiler. That's worth at least 5hp right??? A pretty thick swaybar to help reduce the large amounts of bodyroll/understeer. Really made a difference and should have been stock on the car. A pretty nice short ram intake and (not pictured) underdrive pully. Seemed to help throttle response and the car doesn't sound nearly like a high strung weedwacker now. Out with the old, heavy steel rims and lovely stock Toyota tires. In with some decently sticky yokohamas and lightweight wheels. Oh! And some window tinting for the hot, hot arizona sun. Overall i'm pretty happy with my little improvements and can't wait to take the car out soon and get laughed at in an autocross or two. I do enjoy the 5 hours of work doing my vehicles, but seeing the yellow haze appear monday morning. Since I'm on-call this weekend with Fuckstick McGee at the office, I'll do my quarterly "clean the trash out of the DD." Wait, this is "what did you do to your ride today" vs "what you intend to do to your ride tomorrow." The intentions are good, however. I'll play my game of "how much loose ammo is in the back-seat-game" as well.

Pulled off the stupid paper oil pan gasket that I installed when I changed rod and main bearings, then replaced it with the thick cork Fel-Pro that I should have bought in the first place. All the sudden I have a British car that doesn't leak oil. It just feel so wrong.

Took it out for a better drive today to follow up on the leak, tire's retaining air for now so I'm guessing it was a screw up. Also now I'm back to stock size wheels my speedometer displays the correct speed!

If it happened in public there's not much you can do about it, but in this case it was happening at my home at around the same time every morning which led me to waste my time for the most part. Oh well no big deal, it stopped and that's all that matters. Back to the topic, I have to do another oil change this weekend because I left my filter wrench at home when I did my oil change . Ah well at least I'll get all the oil out of the cooler. I'll also install the new HVAC blower motor and install some trim/interior bits on the truck.

Summer tires and wheels, finally! Jacking it up by the rear diff was pretty weird, especially since my trolley jack is tiny as all get out. I'm debating whether or not to repaint the wheels - they're EDM WRX wheels, but I kind of like them. I'll probably have to get rid of them when I go to wider tires I was worried they wouldn't clear my brakes (they definitely don't clear STI Brembos) but they do!

So I'm parting out my Trans Am that I wrecked and I ran into a dilemma. Someone bought the rear end, and someone bought the front suspension and k-member. I now have a Trans Am carcass sitting on jack stands. How do I move it if I need to? How do I get rid of it? HOW WILL I RECLAIM MY GARAGE?!? It works better than I imagined. I can just lean on the car and slide it around. When I call a tow truck to come get the shell I'll be ready

Thought I hydrolocked my engine in my 2003 RSX Type S. I run an Injen cold air intake, which places the duct right in front of the driver side wheel, inside of the bumper. Air (water) enters through the brake duct and is good for a good increase in horsepower and throttle response. So I was driving home and it started raining like hell, lots of standing water on the road. My visibility was poo poo and I hit a puddle and the car died pretty much immediately. I pulled over into a gas station and stood outside staring at my car with my hands on my hips. I popped the hood and tried to start it. I cranked on it for a good 10 seconds and it finally stumbled to life, with a shitload of steam coming out of the tailpipe and ran kind of lovely for a minute or two. I got out and listened to the engine. I couldn't hear any knocking or anything abnormal, and there was no check engine light, so I drove off. I drove home and turned the car off and coasted through every puddle, big or small. You know you're an enthusiast when literally 5 minutes after hydrolocking your engine, the main reason you want to get home is so you can price K24 blocks. K24 block out of a TSX, plus K20A2 head makes for mad torque, yo.

Hey! Hey guys! Wanna see something gross?! I flushed my power steering fluid! (Crosspost from the BMW thread) Old PS fluid comes out New fluid goes in (repeat about six times after starting car and turning wheel a few times...) I used all three quarts that I bought, and the fluid was looking better but still not red. It was more purply. So I might do it again in a month or so. I'm thinking that was the original fluid, after 13 years and 182k miles. My god.

Well I replaced by HVAC blower motor. High doesn't work and my A/C compressor sorta works now. Fuses are ok, wire connections are good so I'm guessing I'll have to shuffle around the 4 relays in the system to figure out if I need a new relay or to. Good thing they're all the same relay type.

Took the airbox out of my Ranger to get rid of the small restrictive "horn" that Ford seems to put in their airboxes. Intake actually has a nice throaty roar now. Then I washed, clay barred, and waxed it. I love this little truck so much!

To fix it, seal up the black strip between the yellow and red lenses with black silicone. Mask off the lenses with tape so you don't get it everywhere, and use a wet finger to work it in there good. I'm planning on doing this on mine, just haven't gotten to it yet. I'll probably go all the way around and put the silicone on all the seams I see in addition to the center strip though, just to be thorough. You can dry the lights out by removing them from the car, taking the bulbs out of their sockets, pouring out all the water you can, and then running a hairdryer through it or setting it on a heat register for a while. Due to it looking like it was going to rain all weekend (it didn't), plus other stuff I had to do, I didn't get much done. Except this.

A little back story: Last week I finally got around to installing the exhaust on my car that I picked up back in February. I purchased a Road/Race Engineering 3" down pipe with cat-delete and an HKS Carbon Ti Exhaust. After cutting up the Carbon Ti exhaust to fit the 3" down pipe I noticed the car smoking a bit. Only smoked under boost though. Yay DSMs! I finally tracked down another t25 and installed that tonight. Car pulls well now, no smoke and I can finally boost again. Also installed some Hella Supertones that I picked up from RallyArmor.com. Great product and worth the money.

Well yesterday I put in new Bosch H4 lights in the Miata. And while enjoying the new focused light patterns I noticed my radio doesn't work anymore. So today I tore the radio out, reseated all the connections, and now it works again. Oh, and I magnetized all the series sponsor stickers I got from the CSC Racing open house. To much? Changed the oil and replaced the passenger side tie-rod on the e30. I was getting a little tired of the uncommanded wheel movements... I really should get around to replacing the shifter bushings too, but maybe next week.

I rewired the headlights on my MG to use relays, instead of running the entire headlight current through the dash switches. Hopefully this will keep me from melting a THIRD $70 turn signal/high beam stalk. arggggg :Lucas: As an added bonus, the headlights seem marginally brighter, and the thought of running halogen lamps doesn't make me reach for a fire extinguisher anymore. edit: that last part is a lie. eddiewalker fucked around with this message at 01:17 on Apr 22, 2010 |
