2nd playthrough stuff

"Didn't we already have this weapon?"
"Ssh! These things happen the second time around."

Is there a story reason why the Shades have subtitles now? The info screen you got after finishing ending A said that it was "Kaine's story" or something so I figured that the reason you can understand the Shades and hear Tyrann is because it's from her perspective. But then that doesn't entirely make sense because you're still controlling Nier, and you can still hear Tyrann etc. when Kaine is unconscious or such. So I dunno.

I wasn't expecting Tyrann to have voiced lines during the game, first one kind of came out of nowhere.

I love the new spin the extra scenes with the boss shades etc. have put on the game, but at the same time it feels a little bit too emotionally manipulative. It's like the part in Austin Powers where they have this extended sequence showing the tragic consequences of running over a henchman with a bulldozer, except this time it seems to be in complete seriousness. If the shades are so nice, why are they attacking me :colbert: It's like if there was a bonus mode in Gears of War that revealed the snarling menacing aliens were actually cute puppies in alien suits, how could you be so cruel as to defend yourself :bahgawd:

Mr. Hoppy!
Got the game yesterday for PS3 and have to say that I'm liking it quite a lot, especially the music in it.
There are a few "bad" things though. Fishing for example, but just because they don't really tell you that you're supposed to pull the L-stick down (thanks for the guide in the OP).
And the drat boar in the northern plains that just kills me on one blow. :(

Now I just need to plow through the game so I can actually start reading what all of you are talking about.

Didn't expect it honestly, but Zero Punctuation did a review. Not too negative and has a few good points.

Also, EDGE Magazine gave the game a 6/10. It is worth noting that EDGE actually uses the whole 1 to 10 scale for their scores, so 6/10 isn't a bad score just above average.

I like the first Drakengard, but then again I often like unpopular games. The gameplay is simple but simple can be okay too, and I love the wildly discordant music.

Okay, now I think I've got something but maybe it's just because I've been awake for 48 hours and tired as hell but I think I found something. Please tell me I'm not crazy, because I think I might have found another Nier-Drakengard connection.

Okay, here's some stuff from Drakengard's Ending A that's about the "seal" that that jackass Verdelet puts on Red. Look at all the crazy letters and poo poo that's going on there.

Now, turn on Nier and watch the opening demo roll with the crazy "words" that transform into English. Or look at the cover art or some pictures of Black Scrawl. It may just be the lack of sleep talking, but I swear that Verdelet's seal and the Black Scrawl lettering looks nearly identical in places.

Hey look, this is a fairly enjoyable action RPG with a decent plot, cool locales, solid combat and likeable characters. A good buy thus far.

I spent like an hour stabbing my way through the DLC then died on the second-last stage completely out of nowhere when nothing before had given me even remote trouble beyond just being time-consuming :argh:

I guess I'll go back on my third playthrough (right now I'm in the middle of the second, level 28) in the hopes that having a bit more health will prevent being randomly one-shot out of nowhere. Although, do you even get anything for finishing it? I got the three Fool weapons and the two costume sets already.

Goddamn the music was awesome though, I hope there's somewhere to get it outside of the game.

Aside from a few minor variations, they just look like old Germanic runes. A common inspiration for magical script. As much as it would amuse me to have Verdelet be the reason for pretty much everything that has ever gone wrong in TWO realities, it's probably not the case here. It's just the language of magic used in the setting.

Edit: Of course, there's always the question of whether the runes can be decoded/translated at all. Apparently all the runic script and enochian chanting in Bayonetta actually translates back into English, so maybe this is the same?

The DLC is way to short. I'm level 46 and annihilated everything easily (on Normal) except the final boss in no time at all. You don't really get any character or story development either. Only get this if you want the remixed music (pretty cool) and character skins (pretty bad).

Got ending A last night. The whole last stage was awesome, but it spawned more questions than it answered. Primarily I'm very interested in how The world gets to the state it's in currently in the first place, exactly what the hell project Gestalt and replicants are, and the motivations of Popola and Devola. Having to fight them really came out of left field for me, but looking back there were a few hints about it, I guess. Still, as relatively minor characters they are really interesting to me. Here's to hoping the other endings flesh stuff out for me.

Does anyone know where I might find machine oil? I've checked most of the shops I have access to and logic would dictate that it would be in the Junk Heap, but after exploring nearly every inch of that dungeon and killing countless robots I've turned up nothing. The answer will probably make me kick myself, but any leads would be appreciated.

I found it most commonly on the flying robots, especially when I equipped a weapon/magic that had a high item drop rate

Just got ending C. I've spent too much time farming poo poo like forlorn necklaces and am honestly a bit tired of the game, so the ending didn't really resonate with me until the camera cut to the Moonflower Nier gave to Kaine. That part made me pretty :smith:

By the way, regarding ending A:Does anything special happen if you enter the wrong name (the one Youna loves most) or does the game just tell you to try again? Or is it just a fade to black and Game Over? Is it worth trying out? And does anyone have any tips for farming forlorn necklaces? I've spent HOURS killing shamans on top of the Lost Shrine (with +30 item drops) and gotten a grand total of one (1) of the things. I need two more :(

Edit: Holy poo poo, just one more.
Another edit: I got the last two in the span of ten minutes. I can't believe it. drat you, probability!

Well, as the documents state some of the shades are going defective and attacking the shells. Or maybe it's the other way around. Anyway, I imagine most of the shades you fight are these defective ones and/or the ones that are pissed that you keep killing them. Even Kalil is trying to get Beepy to stop fighting. There are several peaceful shades in the game but you'll only see them if you do the right sidequests. Oh and by the way, you kill them!

The only one I think is kind of forced is the wolf one. The wolves were already aggressive in Part 1 but the shade wolf is acting like he's all surprised there is fighting now.

The explanation for hearing Shade voices, well you've basically got it, is that Kaine could always understand them because she has Tyrann. You just get to hear it now. Game magic.

I do have a question of my own though about Ending B. Who the hell are the boss shades that the Shadowlord is mourning them at the end of playthrough B?

Ed: Just volunteer guardians of the "sanctuary" maybe? And he is just mourning their sacrifice, or something.

Just picked this game up a couple of days ago, and wow. I heard good things about this game, but it's even better than what I thought it was going to be. The story and characters are some of the best from any jrpg, and combat is fun for the most part. I think this may be my favorite jrpg of this generation, which I guess isn't saying since I played maybe 3 of them.

But I think I am closing in on the end of the game. I just found all 5 keystone pieces and am supposed to go to the Shadowlord's lair. Will following that take me to the end of the game, or is there still more after that?

I have theories for most of that, but the twins are a huge question mark because they're complete non-characters for most of the game and they only get a few minutes near the end to exposit. I hope we get some more info in another playthrough, but it's equally likely we'll get none at all because they say they're "guiding Nier to his destiny" or some poo poo and a lot of TV/game writers would consider that foolproof motivation.

You can reasonably play through all the real content in the game in about 20 hours without really missing content. You might have to watch endings C and D on youtube, but it's about five total minutes of extra gameplay and one decision. I rented it and completed it to my satisfaction in a rental

Just finished Ending B. I'm really satisfied with my experience with this game, flaws and all. The fact that I can only recommend the game to friends with many caveats makes me sad, as what they do well here they do *really* well. I ended up watching ending C and D on youtube, though in retrospect since I didn't know how close I was to finding all of the weapons I somewhat regret it. Maybe I'll spend the last three hours necessary to get those final endings myself; I was really moved by them.

Any word on how this game is selling? I don't know how easy it'd be to make another game in this setting, but I'd love to see Cavia make more games like this. We need more like this.
