I just changed the serpentine belt on my Evo IX. It was the first time doing it on this car in particular and it took about 40 minutes since I was doing it solo and it was really cramped around the pulleys. This was the last segment of my 30000 mile maintenance routine. I changed the transmission, transfer case, and rear differential fluids last week before departing on vacation. The Amsoil 75W90 I put in the transmission certainly makes shifts feel smoother than stock. As for the other fluids, Mitsubishi only sells their gear oil by the gallon at something like $90 per. It was still much cheaper than the $400 my local dealership quoted me sans belt, though the service manual says it's required.

Stripped old paint off valve cover on Monday. Then applied new black wrinkle paint and then yellow paint in an attempt to make yellow wrinkle. Total fail.

Messy job has now been stripped and wrinkle red has been applied. It's now drying. Pics to come.

Last night I put the exhaust manifold back on my 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. I had removed the EM in order to look for a big oil leak in between the EM and the block. I though I had found and repaired the leak.

Before I put the front end back on the ground I ran the engine for a few minutes. There was no leaking or burning oil smell.

I got up early this morning and replaced the brake pads on the car and drove it to work. I hadn't made it three miles before I could smell burning oil and see smoke coming out from under the hood again. gently caress!

As an aside, the design of the front brake calipers on these cars is completely retarded. I have done pads on this and similar cars several times and every time it strikes me how dumb the design is.

I tore out all the wiring and lights on my utility trailer and installed waterproof LED multifunction lights. I've got side markers on all four corners, running/brake lights to the rear and a license plate light that shines down onto... nothing. Because the plate is screwed into the big slab of wood that is the tail gate. Because it's low enough to the ground that the plate would routinely scrape the ground when going up a hill.

So anyway, I did it right. All the wires are fully in the C-channel frame, with looped hold downs every foot or so. I soldered and heat shrinked the tail lamps into the main wires instead of using wire nuts and electrical tape. Then, since it was a LED system, I needed grounds. My newish angle grinder cleaned up some metal and toothed washers should keep the connection, even after the brackets rust again.

Next year i've got to strip out all the wood. Each board is held down by 3-4 carriage bolts at each cross member. They're all rusted solid. So that'll be fun then.

It had been 12 years since I soldered anything electrical. I was quite pleased when all five joints took solder perfectly and remained shiny after cooling.

Tore apart the doors from my parts car. I wanted to save every usable part in case of problems in the future. I stripped the trim, window regulators, lock and latch from the drivers side door and pulled the glass out. Took me about an hour because I couldn't fit a ratchet inside to hit a few nuts. When I went to the other side I found that a PO had used loving pop rivets in place of a few bolts so I couldn't get the glass out of that door at the time.

I pulled the steering column on my MG, chiseled off the security screws on the ignition switch and replaced it with a new repro unit. Then I tracked down where a PO cut the starter wire and spliced in a button on the dash rather than just replacing the ignition switch the right way.

Stuck with a useless (but discrete) button on the dash, I opened up my garage door opener and wired the dash button to the opener so I can keep it locked in my glovebox.

Before I put everything back together, I'm going to pull all of the gauge faces to clean the glass and polish the chrome trim rings, but lunch comes first.

Don't listen to him, Amsoil fanboyism is only a retarded for engine oil. Different gear oils do actually affect manual transmission shift quality, be it Amsoil/Redline/etc.

So today I painted my sidemarkers color matched apart from a sticker that I had made and put on them. Peeling the sticker off, I got a nice little light up logo.

Tried to clearcoat one of them, but I think I jumped the gun and the clearcoat made the paint run and eat itself. So I am waiting on a test piece of plastic and trying to see if it just needed to dry more.

Yes, you.
I learned the value of washers!

I've been hearing this odd clicking noise for a some time now particularly when going over any bumps in the road, I suspected it was an endlink issue but hadn't bothered looking at it.

I just put my car up and found the source of it - someone (coughmecough) forgot to put a washer on the endlink and the rubber bushing had all but stretched it's way over the bolt that secures the endlink to the sway bar and fallen off.

You can see here -

What you SHOULD see there is the end of the bolt in the upper right of this picture -

Yup, totally a stupid move. I found the washer on my driveway - I had a lot of issues when I put the sways/endlinks on as I snapped a couple of bolts so I probably got hasty and overlooked it once I cleared the hurdles.

I pulled the endlink off, secured a washer, replaced the sway bar and endlink. So my rear sway has basically been non-functional. Now that it's fixed suddenly my car feels like it should, nice and stuff, totally flat. I KNEW I had too much body roll :D.

New car thread here for those that are curious.

Does your differential have a gasket? If so, I hope you simply re-torqued it, because tightening it past spec will actually cause it to leak more.

Anything can be used as a hammer if you try hard enough.
Power front windows:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE30-yYBAyY

And because it's midnight and I'm tired, here is the description taken verbatim from the video.

quote:

Salvaged some power window regulators from a wrecked sedan this morning and did the wiring myself.

One of the regulators was a bit seized, and the other was covered in semi-dry grease, but a trip through the parts washer and some new molybdenum grease got them working smoothly. Also added a light spray of some silicon lube to the rubber window channels.

Because I only did the front windows (and because I'm somewhat lazy), the switches are in the dash. Putting them there eliminates the need for wires to run back and forth between the doors... Everything meets up nicely in the middle.

I'm proud to say that now my absolute base model car has TWO powered conveniences - The antenna and now the windows!

(Don't worry about the holes where the window winders are - I'm going to be putting some custom panels in there shortly to hold an 8" woofer, 4" dome midrange, and a 1" soft dome tweeter.)

My base model is moving up in the world!

I changed the oil in my 1995 Acura Integra SE, 1995 Lexus SC400 and 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. 10W-40 for all since they all have high miles and it is summertime.

I also changed the MTX fluid in the Integra. This made a huge mess and smelled terrible. I did the smart thing and removed the bolt for the fill hole first, since a transmission you can't fill with fluid is no fun. Well, someone had apparently filled this transmission using a different hold because a LOT of fluid went all over the garage floor when I removed the filler plug. And of course the filler plug went into the drain bucket and I didn't figure this out until later. Big mess, oily fingers, grumble grumble.

I also replaced the cam pulley/spark plug valley covers on my 1995 SC400. They have been off the car for over a year, but after dealing with the aftermath of stuff getting into the timing cover on another car I decided to play it safe. The car threw a code as soon as I started it; I had forgotten to plug two big vacuum lines back in. The car was purring like a kitten afterward.

I did not know the Jeep needed 6 quarts of oil (I've only had it for about 3 weeks). That is fine. The Integra only needs 4 quarts, so they can team up to drink down two 5 quart bottles.

Tomorrow night I need to change the oil in my wife's 2000 Honda Accord EX 2.3L five-speed. I will probably change the MTX fluid in that car too since I have two more bottles of Honda Genuine fluid and a new drain plug gasket for it.

I only change the oil in my cars twice a year since I don't put many miles on anything since I switch cars so often. Sadly, my wife's car gets the same treatment.

I hate changing oil. Every time I do it there is a mess and I swear next time I will just take it someplace. And yet, I buy oil and filters and do it myself anyway.

The green ZX2 HAD a nasty oil leak that left stains all over my driveway, garage, and the street in front of my house. I spent like two hours today pushing Oil-Dri around and grinding it into the stains with my shoes. All the concrete does look a lot better now. My neighbor said I can borrow his pressure washer after he picks it up from his storage locker this week. I have never used one before and am looking forward to it.

Saturday I washed, clayed, and waxed the 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 I bought with a broken timing belt and nursed back to health. The paint looks really good except for all the scratches and dings the previous owner got from parking in college parking lots. The sides of my wife's Accord look like the surface of the moon because of all the parking lot dings, especially the passenger side.

A little spring cleaning:

Wash with foam gun
Clay
Menzerna Super Intensive Polish w/ PC7424
Menzerna Nano Finish w/ PC7424
Meguiars #16 wax

I also detailed the engine bay, vacuumed the interior, and pulled the wheels off to clean the insides. Meguiars #16 is the first carnauba I've used and it's fantastic. Feels nice and thick and makes the color a bit warmer (car is off white). The Menzerna polish combo is pretty easy to work with and does a nice job. The paint is not completely mark-free but still significantly better than before and I'm still refining the technique.

Obligatory reflection shot.
