Edelweiss posted:Seems like most DJs/artists whatever around here use Ableton. I've used both it and Reason and can't really commit to either. Ableton is king for samples and sequencing, but Reason seems better for constructing the base sounds. I know Reason's instruments can be chained into Ableton and have done so, but you lose out on being able to sequence all the dials and subtracks and so on, and it's a pain to deal with the two program setup. Personally, I use both programs when performing live. All of my drum programming is done in ReDrum (I love the 909 interface) and ReWired over into Ableton Live where all the samples, mixing and looping is taken care of. An interesting fact: you can change Reason project files on-the-fly without affecting the performance of the Ableton Live set. Leave one project open, and then open another project. Then, close the first project. The drum pattern will migrate over seamlessly. This allows you to constantly interchange Reason files and keep settings organized for your instruments and drum patterns. Plus, because of the A/B/C/D banks, you can have up to 32 patterns per track... My live set would be impossible without Ableton + Reason. It's a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to the workflow it's quite rewarding I think.

Apologies. Try going to a show in Santa Cruz, though - it's filled with fourteen year olds on ecstacy, gangsters selling heroin, and confused college freshman. It's a pretty funny mixture. Also all the good electronic shows are fourty five minutes to an hour away in San Fran, we just get local DJs (who aren't half bad though), a bunch of rich college kids "mixing" dubstep, and the occasional big electronic name at the main club (Bassnectar last February... still regret missing that, and Benassi in a few weeks). To get back on the train, could someone lead me to artists that sound like Jack Beats? I'm not sure what style of music they are (googling leads me to fidget or electro house) but I really dig these heavy dance-y basslines, and a lot of dubstep music is a bit too aggressive for my tastes. Their essential mix is awesome, though. An small local event this weekend, Sander Van Doorn next weekend, and then the Chemical Brothers in Oakland the week after that. I haven't listened to the Chemical Brothers much but I've heard good things. Where should I start with their music to familiarize myself before their show?

if you Santa Cruz people are interested some of my friends are having an event at The Blue Lagoon tonight. I haven't been to any of their events and I've never been to the blue lagoon so I really can't make any promises. But they've been doing 300 person raves all summer and this is their first club night. It's $5 and 21+ and they generally have good taste in music. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=141783155847012&ref=mf

Saw Steve Aoki at a small club in Downtown Sacramento last night. Unsurprisingly, the opening DJs were better than him. He absolutely insists on playing random metal/rockish sounding songs that are completely out of place at an electro event (in my opinion at least) but the crowd was insane, which was good. Now that I've seen him at a massive event and at a small club, though, I don't feel any impulse to see him again...

He is a pretty cool dude, although the only one I haven't seen spin on that bill. Some of them literally show up with cds, try to beatmatch, and end up letting a lot of tracks train wreck, play out, or have some awkward transition. That's a huge part of the vibe that is killed (for me at least)

I dunno there weren't too many hosed up transitions / lovely songs that night. Honestly Aoki had more dead spots in his set than anyone else. There was one instance early on in the night where I could tell that whoever was playing completely hosed up whatever he was doing but that's about it. I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to live music, though - as long as I can keep dancing. edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq8krNFL3_U nice track!
