Let me get this straight. They took out the 4.6L, put in a 5.0L and a carb? I fail to see that they could make cheaper power with buying a new engine and stuff. Let alone nothing ever working in the dash again.

Buicks in general are considered boring cars for old people, and the Skylark, being the cheapest low-end Buick at the time, is considered to be a car for nerds and people old before their time. And frankly, the Skylarks were pretty fugly cars in the '80s. If you were a cool kid and wanted something similar in the GM line, you would have gotten something like a Quad4 Grand Am, instead of the Buick. Although it was the same car, the ribbed plastic cladding and lack of chrome made the Grand Am less of an old man's car. Also, I'm guessing you didn't own that Skylark for a very long time, because over the long run, the Quad4 had a reputation for being troublesome.

The 80's were a nightmare for GM. The N-body is just one of their examples of "excellence". That decade tainted many on the products that they offered, they were simply not good cars. At all. People didn't stop buying their cars for no reason. They are just pulling out of that horrible time now. Perception is a powerful thing.

It sounds like this guy bought everything for way more than he should have, tore the car apart to prep for the swap and then realized it would never, ever be completed. I'd stay far away.

Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota just used to have stylized versions of their names on they that they offered, or unique badges for the high-end models. The new symbols that replaced the old lettering are either really ugly(Mazda, Toyota) or do not work very well on a car(Nissan). I know it was to build "brand-identity" or something but what could be more recognizable than the company name? KlementGottwald fucked around with this message at 22:56 on Aug 31, 2010 |
