All the docs I like are about lonely people. The Dungeon Masters "An evil drow-elf is displaced by Hurricane Katrina. A sanitation worker lures friends into a Sphere of Annihilation. A failed supervillain starts a cable access show involving ninjas, puppets, and a cooking segment. These are the characters, real and imagined, of The Dungeon Masters: Against the backdrop of crumbling middle-class America, two men and one woman devote their lives to Dungeons and Dragons, the storied role-playing game, and its various descendants. As their baroque fantasies clash with mundane real lives, the characters find it increasingly difficult to allay their fear, loneliness, and disappointment with the game’s imaginary triumphs. Soon the true heroic act of each character’s real life emerges, and the film follows each as he or she summons the courage to face it. Along the way, The Dungeon Masters reimagines the tropes of classic heroic cinema, creating an intimate portrait of minor struggles and triumphs writ large." Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJpc0lsdaZ4 Site: http://www.dungeonmastersmovie.com/ Guys and Dolls "For some people, finding a partner in life can be difficult. For others, it’s almost impossible. 10 years ago, a small factory in California began making an alternative partner. Each is tailored made to suit every taste. There are now 3,000 real dolls across the world providing some of those with love and compaionship that real women cannot… Each doll costs around 4,000 pounds. Of those able to afford it, the dolls are worth every penny." In it's entirety: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7277801797935788405 Catfish "In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel's brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue." Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuE98oeL-e0 Suspected to be a mockumentary, see this: http://www.movieline.com/2010/01/does-sundance-sensation-catfish-have-a-truth-problem.php I Think We're Alone Now "Every celebrity deals with his or her share of obsessed fans. "I Think We're Alone Now" is a documentary that focuses on two individuals, Jeff and Kelly, who claim to be in love with the 80's pop singer Tiffany. Jeff Turner, a 50-year-old man from Santa Cruz, California has attended Tiffany concerts since 1988. Diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, he never had a girlfriend. Jeff spends his days hanging out on the streets of Santa Cruz, striking up conversations with anyone who has a moment to spare. Kelly McCormick is a 38-year-old hermaphrodite from Denver, Colorado, who claims to have been friends with Tiffany as a teenager. She credits Tiffany as the shining star who has motivated her to do everything in her life. Both Jeff and Kelly have been labeled stalkers by the media and other Tiffany fans. This film takes you inside the lonely lives these two characters, revealing the source of their clinging obsessions. This age-old story of unrequited love takes a comedic and emotional trip through themes of desperation, isolation, and hope, in the end showing that having something, or someone, to believe in can be more powerful than anything reality has to offer." Has no one mentioned ESPN's 30 For 30 series yet? These are seriously some of the best docs I have seen and I have only been able to find 4 of them thus far. Apparently they have been so well received that they will continue making new ones after the original 30 episodes. 18 of the shows have aired so far with one airing every Tuesday for the rest of the year. I found myself loving the Reggie Miller one and I can't even stand basketball. Icecube's doc about the LA Raiders is fantastic. Wikipedia posted:The idea for the series began with ESPN.com columnist Bill Simmons, who wanted feature filmmakers to recount the sports stories, people, and events from the past 3 decades in which they (1) took a personal interest or involvement, however great or small, and (2) felt that said stories had not been fully explored. Simmons and his team took special interest to "stories that resonated at the time but were eventually forgotten for whatever reason." 1 "King's Ransom" by Peter Burg The 1988 trade of Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings and the effect it had on both Gretzky and Edmonton. 2 "The Band that Wouldn't Die" by Barry Levinson A profile of Baltimore's love affair with football and the Colts, focusing on the Colts Marching Band. After the team decamped for Indianapolis in 1984, the band remained in Baltimore and helped promote the eventual return of the NFL to the city. 3 "Small Potatoes: Who Killed the USFL?" by Mike Tollin Fresh interviews and archival footage track the life and demise of the United States Football League in the mid 1980s. One interview, conducted by Tollin, is with Donald Trump, the former New Jersey Generals owner whose post-interview comments on the league give this documentary its title. 4 "Muhammad and Larry" by Albert Maysles A look at the October 1980 Muhammad Ali-Larry Holmes fight and its impact, featuring fresh interviews with participants and previously unseen lead-up footage from both fighters' camps. 5 "Without Bias" by Kirk Frasier The death of Len Bias, from a cocaine overdose, two days after Boston selected him in the 1986 NBA Draft. 6 "The Legend of Jimmy the Greek" by Fritz Mitchell The life of Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder, from his career as a Las Vegas bookmaker to his tenure on The NFL Today, from which he was fired in 1988. 7 "The U" by Billy Corben The racial and cultural evolution of Miami during the 1980s as represented within the University of Miami football team. (2 hours in length) 8 "Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks" by Dan Klores The impact of Reggie Miller on the New York Knicks in the 1990s, specifically focusing on the 1995 NBA Playoffs and Miller's interaction with Knicks fan Spike Lee. 9 "Guru of Go" by Bill Couturié Paul Westhead's coaching tenure at Loyola Marymount University (1985-1990) features his high-scoring run-and-gun offense and players such as Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers. 10 "No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson" by Steve James The 1993 trial of Hampton, Virginia, high-school athlete Allen Iverson, convicted for his role in a racially-tinged melee, and its impact on both the community and on Iverson's life. (90 minutes in length) 11 "Silly Little Game" by Adam Kurland and Lucas Jansen Meeting at New York City's La Rotisserie Francaise, a group of writers and academics develop Rotisserie Fantasy baseball, only to see it take off and leave them behind. 12 "Run Ricky Run" by Sean Pamphilon and Royce Toni Facing media criticism and fresh rumors of marijuana use, Ricky Williams steps back from the NFL, in 2004, in an effort toward self-redemption. 13 "The 16th Man" by Clifford Bestall, Lori McCreary, and Morgan Freeman How hosting (and winning) the 1995 Rugby World Cup and Nelson Mandela's support of the Springboks national team affected post-apartheid South Africa. 14 "Straight Outta L.A." by Icecube The relationship between the Raiders and the gangsta rap culture in Los Angeles during the team's 13 seasons in L.A. (1982-1994). 15 "June 17, 1994" by Brett Morgen Quick-cut archival montages capture the various sporting events on the day in question and the emotions they generated, with O. J. http://beta.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00tmhc8/Storyville_20102011_YouTube_Hero_The_Winnebago_Man/ For BBC people till septempber 27. Jack Rebney, aka the angriest man in the world, has delighted and fascinated millions of online viewers with the hilariously foul-mouthed and ill-tempered outtakes from a recreational vehicle sales video he made in 1989 - one of the first and best underground videos to be passed hand-to-hand on VHS tapes, before the internet turned him into a full-blown phenomenon. Filmmaker Ben Steinbauer takes on the seemingly impossible task of tracking down Jack, and his journey turns into a fascinating exploration of viral video culture, and what it means on a personal level to its sometimes unwilling subjects. When he finally tracks down Rebney, the real man is more savvy, irascible, deep, weird and cool than could have been imagined, and turns out to be more than able to hold his own in the modern media culture. In short, he is a star. The film explores issues of privacy, internet bullying and ageing, and illuminates how even the most rambunctious individuals have a human side. It is an intelligent, hilarious and unexpectedly poignant look at one man's response to internet fame, and is ultimately a story about how a so-called humiliation can become a beacon of light to many.

I read about it beforehand and went in knowing how the first half of the story went, but I didn't know what happened to Zachary (though I kind of assumed,) or what a crazy nut homegirl was. Even the parts I knew about it though, when they happened, I was a little stunned because I was still wrapped up in the story. So now it's 230 in the god damned morning and I'm sobbing in the dark in my living room. loving thanks.

I'm suggesting this documentary for the plot twist that happens after the film itself. If you're planning to watch this, DO NOT look up the documentary's subjects on google or wikipedia until after watching this. Also, if you're watching this movie, keep watching it after the credits. Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? (also available on Netflix instant queue) The premise: Another average documentary that follows a political candidate as he runs for office. At face value, you're supposed to eventually like this candidate who runs as a progressive liberal democrat for U.S. congress against an established candidate with more money and higher name recognition. You're supposed to sympathize for his young idealistic volunteers as the campaign goes through its ups and downs until primary election day. The ending: He loses in a narrow margin. A year later, he runs for state office and wins. The real plot twist after the documentary: (I really reccomend you not highlighting this until after watching) A criminal investigation implicated Jeff Smith for knowingly violating election laws during the very same campaign that was shown in this film. Jeff Smith later admitted lying to election authorities while cooperating with a supposedly independent organization that ran attack ads against his opponent. Jeff Smith is in jail now for being a crooked politician. So much for Mr. Smith. Echo Chamber fucked around with this message at 02:55 on Sep 13, 2010 |

Anyone know of any documentaries about what people see when they nearly die, or when their brain dies for a few minutes? There's one from like 1978 and I'm looking for something a little more recent than 40 years old. Something with a scientific bent to it, if it's possible, but I'll take what I can get.
