Had to go to the local FBO Saturday night for a Rutgers charter when the 787 taxied by me on its way to the runway down here in FLL. What an awesome looking plane. The engines are gigantic. It left on a 6 hour test flight over to Texas and back. Very quiet on takeoff. One of the Continental guys told me it's down here for hot and humid testing.

Sitting here at Newcastle airport (in Australia) and the RAAF are gearing up for an air show tomorrow and over the weekend. I wish i knew about this, i would've stayed here and taken tomorrow off! Williamstown AFB shares the runway and this is where we keep our F/A-18s, so I'm being treated to a pre-flight entertainment of low-pass formation flying Wish I had my camera!

according to the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piasecki_Heli-Stat) it actually had completed the flight and was taxiing back to the hanger when a minor movement of the undercarriage caused the whole jungle-gym of aluminum to resonate badly, and the pilot tried to minimize it by taking off. Obviously it didn't work...

A couple of weeks ago I flew 550 miles north of the Arctic coast of Alaska to check out a US and Canadian Ice Breaker. Someone on the US ship took these amazing shots of us flying around. It was a rare and awesome opportunity, especially since I was sitting on the open cargo ramp....with a three star admiral.... who is second in charge of the US Coast Guard. again Yes T56's are smokey bastards. Surprisingly good for a little museum in the middle of nowhere. Plan on posting pics later. http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/ Their main attraction is a Lancaster that, while not flight worthy, does have healthy and live Merlins in it that they fire up on a regular basis. Also, the museum commissioned this artwork for the 65th anniversary of a fellow being awarded the Victoria cross. When I first saw it in person hanging in the museum, I thought it was a photo. More aeronautical insanity! During the 1950's, both sides of the Cold War began worrying about the possibility of a sneak attack disabling their airfields, so experiments began on "zero length launch" systems for fighters. Initially, the idea was to shoot fighters off a track (actually a modified cruise missile launcher) using a booster rocket to get them up to flying speed, and then have them land gear-up on an 80X800ft inflatable mat at the end of the flight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE6QmjAlHT8 The USAF conducted tests using an F-84 fired from a modified cruise missile launcher (and using the rocket from the missile as well), and although the takeoffs went surprisingly well, the inflatable mat idea didn't really work. The first mat landing resulted in the arresting hook of the aircraft tearing up the mat, damaged the aircraft beyond repair, and gave the text pilot severe back injuries. Although later landings went a bit better (the aircraft could at least be used again), the idea was judged to be unworkable and scrapped. Since the launch part of the system worked pretty well, the USAF expanded to shooting F-100's from trailers, strapping the aircraft to a rocket that produced 130,000lbs of thrust and took it from 0-275MPH in about four seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDstVGAmI74 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oImq1glnOds&feature=related Somewhat surprisingly, the launch system worked almost flawlessly, and aside from an incident where the booster failed to detach from the aircraft (requiring the pilot to eject), there were no major accidents. Although shooting fighters off of trailers was clearly possible, the logistical and security concerns (like fitting through tunnels or under bridges) posed by the setup, combined with the increasing effectiveness of cruise missiles and work on other short takeoff systems meant the idea was never put into service in either the US or USSR, which had conducted similar experiments.

So last week we had three helicopters flying around Stewart, but I couldn't get pictures of them. I can give a basic description though. Way bigger than a Blackhawk, olive drab, refuel boom on the nose, cargo door in the rear, and two "pods" of some kind running the length of the fuselage. Am I correct in assuming these were Marine Corps Super Stallions?

Because they have a collective fangirl crush on the developer, who posts on the forums, and they get completely infuriated by the idea of someone not paying their idol for his work. quote:Take your time guys, don't rush it. I think this fits as "Aeronautical Insanity" Quote: "The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency." A machine gun? Good luck with that. "Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," - You're kiddin'! No way! These things look like lovely home-built experimental ultralights. Quote: "bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads." Yep!
