And if you don't already listen to them, check out PE's albums from 88'-91'. Oh and get A Tribe Called Quest's first 3 albums.

I'm looking for some baroque-classical style stuff that uses the organ. No harpsichord please. I really enjoy the minor, diminished, and augmented sound on a nice organ. The obvious point of reference is bach's toccata and fugue, having it played with a bit of a virtuoso style is also a nice touch.

Also, I know there are some great organ work in a lot of 70's rock, so if any of those guys have some material they did on their own that would be great too, but I honestly have no idea where to start for finding these composers, Pandora is virtually no help for classical stuff either.

Can anyone recommend anything that sounds like this?

Specifically that kind of hazy, saturated, psychedelic production. It's almost dreampop-esque which is something I've never really heard before in the context of soul music (granted my knowledge of the genre is pretty limited). Falsetto vocals a bonus but not required.

Magma
Christian Vander is probably my favorite drummer of all time. Magma are a very strange band and a lot of people don't like the operatic/jazz scat singing in a fictional language, but I think it's all brilliant.

King Crimson
Really any era of King Crimson, but the '80s band were responsible for a lot of their most rhythmically complex music, being a weird sort of gamelan music-influenced progressive New Wave.

If you like this, you might want to check out Adrian Belew's more recent work with Eric and Julie Slick as the Adrian Belew Power Trio. Eric's an absolutely incredible drummer.

Not sure if this is what you're after, but I'm recommending it by virtue of being one of my favourite pieces of drumming. It's a collaboration between Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree and 05Ric, who sings and plays extended range bass. Collectively they're just known as "Gavin Harrison and 05Ric."

I'd really appreciate some metal recommendations.

Basically I'm into the following, in no particular order:

Dream Theater (Early-Mid stuff, last two albums = meh)
Metallica
Opeth
Disturbed (On occasion)
Avenged Sevenfold (Not really... I've just heard the latest album and like some of the songs, but I think it's just some residual Portnoy fanboyism that's making me listen to it...)
Pain of Salvation (Early stuff)

I like progressive metal, it has to have depth and good lyrics and good drumming. I really like albums that I can listen to 100 times and still enjoy them/pick up something new from them.

Hopefully my taste in music doesn't get too bashed :P

Maybe Between the Buried and Me? I listen to a lot of Opeth/DT/PoS and those guys blew me away. The newest album is a great place to start. It's called The Great Misdirect. Gojira is usually really liked by old school Metallica fans.

Here's a question of mine: I recently came across 2 albums from Blue Sky Black Death: Late night Cinema and Slow Burning Lights. I usually absolutely hate everything electronic/hiphop, but these 2 albums I just can't stop listening to. Does anyone know of any similar artists? What really hooked me is that it's instrumental for the most part and the dreamy mood.

I looked around for instrumental hip hop as that's what they get classified at, but I disliked everything I found, it just sounded like regular hip hop without the lyrics.

Edit: I like a couple of songs from Massive Attack, and I really love the Voyage 34 album from Porcupine Tree if it's any help.

https://intergalactic.fm/ is a drat good resource. esepecially Intergalactic Classix. Youtube is surprisingly helpful, since a lot of great singles are on there. Don't limit yourself to Italo, Hi-NRG is just as great.

Some of my favorites are (I'm by no means an expert on this poo poo, and I'd assume a lot of these are pretty obvious):
Lime - Lime II (especially the song Babe, We're Gonna Love Tonite)
Easy Going - Casanova
Phaeax - Talk About
Cinema - I Love Men
Miquel Brown - So Many Men, So Little Time
Divine - Shoot Your Shot
Divine - Native Love (Step by Step)
Bronksi Beat - Smalltown Boy
Fun Fun - Have Fun
The Flirts - Made in America
Patrick Cowley - Megatron Man

And for me, I'm looking for some soulful southern hip-hop. I know most of the SUC stuff and a lot of that is close to what I'm looking for, but I guess I'm looking for something in between Pimp C's sweet side and Z-Ro.

I'm looking for sugary 80s new wave and pop that has become obscure over the years. I'm a sucker for 80s pop in general but have already heard a lot of the top ten music since it has sort of been ingrained to our culture as representing that time period. There used to be an 80s pop radio station that I listened to, but even with all of the material that is out there they ended up playing the same things over and over. Recently, I've heard a few songs on a "we'll play any music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s" station that I've enjoyed immensely and had never heard before.

I looked them up and it seems that at their time of release they were fairly well known (they all seem to have entered the Billboard 100 charts at some point, or were much bigger in England) but because they weren't top 20 hits in USA they don't get much radio play on mix stations anymore and were never on that 80s station.

So I'm wondering if any of you guys have any favorite pop singles that were not top ten in the US but were still pretty big. Here are some examples of stuff I've liked, if it helps:

The Red Rockers- China
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmevO2V2JxA

Kristy Maccoll- A New England
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fwtFSEovro

Freur- Doot Doot
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pnQfPOFNLI

Icicle Works- Whisper to a Scream
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIxgHu5U1v4

If not, is there a free database somewhere of random billboard charts throughout the 80s? Most of the lists I have found are just the number ones.

EDIT: Holy crap, after making this post I was just about to go into the help me identify a song megathread and ask for an 80s song that featured the lyrics "Runaway" a lot in the chorus since I wanted to mention it in this post. Ayreon - Massive prog metal project masterminded by Arjen Luccasen, who collaborates with a bunch of metal vocalists and instrumentalists (including James Labrie from Dream Theater, Michael Akerfeldt from Opeth and Daniel Gildenlow from PoS) to create epic space opera-style concept albums. Human Equation and Electric Castle are good albums to start with. The older ones are a bit rough, but they all have their own charm to them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFVL8--fmws

Cynic - I'd be surprised if you hadn't at least heard of these guys, but in any case do yourself a favour and check out Traced in Air. The lyrics are wonderful (if you can get over the vocoder effect used for most of it), and Sean Reinert is basically a drumming god.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fhVLykF3nU

Haken - Relatively new band, released their debut album Aquarius just a few months ago. It's um... basically Dream Theater. There's no escaping the comparison, really. Sounds like them circa Scenes From A Memory, complete with Jordan Rudess' zany keyboard effects/interludes, but with better production. Well worth checking out, anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsJpy84ZiGk

Mastodon - Again, there's probably no way you haven't heard of them, but check out Blood Mountain or Leviathan if not.

Here are a few of my favorites. I'm not too big on the sugary, so some of these might not exactly fit your criteria, or be that obscure, but they're probably close enough.

Mike Oldfield - To France
(Also Moonlight Shadow, his biggest pop hit.)

Electric Light Orchestra - Twilight
(I sometimes blare this in the car when I'm coming back from evening classes, and it never fails to put me in a great mood.)

OMD - Telegraph

Yes - Run to the Light
(From that brief, bizarre period where The Buggles joined Yes. This is probably their poppiest song—the others lean more toward prog rock.)

a-ha - The Sun Always Shines on T.V.
(Far from obscure, but nowhere near as big as Take on Me in the US, and I think it's a better song.)

Most listed in this post have some indie/electronic/dance crossover to varying degree's, some will be more like a typical rock band and some will be more electro-pop. Also try looking at some of the festival lineups from the past few years as MGMT and passion Pit tend to play a lot of rock/indie festivals with a lot of similar style bands.
All bands i have mentioned have released something in the last 18 months or so so finding their work wont be too hard. Hope you enjoy!

I'm sure you've heard New Order, but if you haven't listen to any of their singles from the 80s (the 90s stuff ain't bad, its just less catchy). The Thompson Twins and Heaven 17 are two groups that tend to get over looked when people talk about 80s pop, also good stuff.

And Man in the Rain off Tubular Bells III is in a similar vein as Moonlight Shadow/To France, but his instrumental progressive rock albums are his best work. Tubular Bells is iconic, but Ommadawn is probably my favorite of his works.

It's the Evolution Revolution.
I'm looking for metal music that has qualities that are normally found in trance music. I'm not so much looking for actual trance elements, like melodic synth lines and downbeat kick drums, but more the emotional response that trance music tends to incite - the dream-like, time stretching, never ending mood. Any suggestions?
