My favorite things to do in WoW oddly enough were mining and buying/selling at the Auction House. Are there any (free) MMOs that focus strongly on that aspect of the game? Don't get me wrong, I like grinding, doing quests and dungeons, but the WoW end game content was really boring to me. While not an MMO try Recettear, you own an item shop to pay back debt and it has a little dungeoneering side-quest type deal. It has a free demo as well.

I completed Arkham Asylum yesterday, and I'm looking for more GOOD (and <15$, i'm saving for nv D:) games better played with a controller (I just bought one and fancy using it) that can be bought on Steam. I know this is a very vague request, but anything like batman, max payne or even recettear will be fine. Prototype is a little on the expensive side but it's an absolutely fantastic game with two godawful boss fights. Probably the only game I've ever done every optional challenge in and enjoyed every bit of it besides GTA3/VC/SA. edit - bleh nevermind it's up to $30 again which puts it out of consideration for you. Still a very good game to watch for if it goes on sale again.

I've already played Evil Genius, Dungeon Keeper (games just generally like those two would be awesome as well) and Overlord. Also before anyone suggests Fable, while technically able to be evil you're still saving the world hero style so it's not really evil (3 has this represented the best, you're not evil, just immoral). Fallout: New Vegas is good for this. You can go around murdering literally anyone who you don't like (even quest-sensitive NPCs), wipe out entire villages (which will be properly acknowledged by the game) and just choose to side with the faction that will enslave or murder everyone instead of fighting them.

I loved Sins of a Solar Empire (+xpacs). I'm looking for a real time 4X, space or fantasy preferred; came out in the last decade preferred. Probably going to check out Anno 1404, but sounds like it lacks the SPACE or HURRMAGIC feel I want. I want to check out Rise of Legends, too. Is that pretty much it?

You're spot-on about the diamond in the rough analogy, it really is that. Whenever I recommend this to someone I preface it with "It seems really lame and tries too hard to be gritty with tits everywhere, BUT..." and I'm sorry for the people who kept insisting it was some kind of combo-brawler (I don't really get why people desperately try to get anyone to play the games they like at any cost). The voice-acting and dialogue is laughable throughout but definitely has an ironic charm to it. However if you can see any good in the game thus far then you probably should come back to it when you're looking for a more point-and-click RPG experience, because after the first act the game really increases in quality and stays great throughout. This is probably the only game besides Planescape: Torment where I actually made choices based on the plot consequences and not for gameplay reasons. Choices you make early on will come back to haunt you, which gives a cool sense of scale and prevents you from just reloading when something unexpectedly blows up in your face. Plus the music/atmosphere is pretty great, even though it's not far from Standard Fantasy the Eastern European influence really gives it a unique feel. And afterwards you and your bros can toss around great quotes like "Did you ever consider that your plan would bring you face to face with A WITCHER?!"

Looking for a space 4x game that's not overly complicated, basically the civ revolutions of 4x space basically. I liked SotS, but the tactical combat was pretty clunky and anemic. Having real time combat is not a necessity, but I just don't want to be spending ages digging through menus and tables trying to manage an empire. Any suggestions?

How's No More Heroes? Should I just disregard IGN's score of it? It really reminds me of Kill Bill as a videogame; you hunt assassins as one yourself while the entire thing is a parody/homage of the medium the work belongs to. That seems awesome, but what do you guys think? I was also considering Muramasa, since the graphics make the game look like it belongs in a museum. Way of the Samurai for PS2 is also under my consideration.

Galactic Civilizations II has often been called Civ in Space. It's a fairly apt analogy and it's also a very good game. There's also a Civ IV mod that turns it into a Space 4X game but GalCiv2 is probably a better bet. Should be pretty cheap on Impulse.

I love No More Heroes, but it's not for everyone- the gameplay is pretty simple and you won't find a lot of challenge outside the bossfights. If you're in the mood for old-school brawler sensibilities and a bizarre storyline with a sense of humour you'll love it, though. Way Of The Samurai is brilliant, to me. A single runthrough is only a few hours, but the sheer amount of variability in the world means you'll probably put weeks into it like I did, trying to get every permutation of the plot and the elusive 'best' ending. The combat is incredibly fun, too.

I was very disappointed in it, to say the least. Way of the Samurai I missed when it was new, and I think it maybe hasn't aged well. The "choose your own adventure" quality of the gameplay is interesting, but I was bored before I even finished my first playthrough, and it's a very short game. The game got average reviews at first but the expansion packs improved on everything and pretty much everyone will tell you it's an entirely different, better game than the originals. If Galactic Civilizations is Civilizations IV then Sword of the Stars is Civilization Revolutions. Perestroika posted:New Vegas, without a doubt. Nicer story, better writing, traits, proper companions, nicer overall graphics. I'd encourage everybody to take this with a grain of salt. It is essentially more Fallout 3, albeit with more fun things and additions like weapon mods, and the story line is a lot more fun because you can actually influence it's outcome, and even be just a straight up evil prick, unlike Fallout 3 where it turns out, yeah, you can be evil, for about 30 minutes until you save the world as Jesus Christ in a power armor suit. That said, New Vegas is retarded buggy, doesn't look at all better or different than Fallout 3 save for a few new textures and models, and the engine is really starting to show its age. Hell, the wasteland is pretty much the DC wasteland, just more desert-y. Fallout 3 GOTY has a lot more content than New Vegas does at launch as well. Both the Pitt and Broken Steel are awesome as hell. I'd probably go with the GOTY, you're probably not going to be missing a whole lot with New Vegas; it's pretty much Fallout 3.2 or something.

Most/all of New Vegas's problems come down to the lovely engine. In every other aspect it will kick Fallout 3's rear end. The story is better, the combat is better, the companions are better, and your character build has much more impact. In fact the only thing I'd say that I enjoyed less than Fallout 3 was Mr. New Vegas (It might be an unpopular opinion but THREE DAWG is the loving man). If you really can't get both, then I'd still recommend New Vegas. If you can get both, then that's even better! Fallout 3 is good on its own but the Broken Steel, Point Lookout and The Pitt DLC are all definitely worth it.

How good is the Shining Force series compared to other strategy RPGs? I've got 1 and 2 from the SEGA Ultimate Collection, and after I gave it a spin the other day I was wondering if it's worth trying to get into. In the same vein, should I jump straight to 2 if I don't have any nostalgia invested in the series?

They play pretty differently from most modern SRPGs but are still fairly fun. 2 is probably a better game but to be honest it's not necessarily such a massive improvement that you should skip 1. Just play both unless you really don't have time to.

Joking aside, I'm going to recommend Little King's Story for the Wii. It's actually incredibly fun and charming, and just as good as those games were. Actually, if you haven't played Pikmin, I'd recommend those games too, they were the prime inspiration for Overlord's and Little King's Story's gameplay. And, uh, you've played Portal 2? What? STALKER is kind of tough to pin down what 'type' of game it is. It's foremost a shooter but it has a great many RPG elements even in the way you go through the game world as there are 'towns' to barter in, open field areas with enemies/allies and dungeons. You have an inventory, buy equipment, upgrades and interact with characters but there's no leveling, character stats exp or spendable points. It's an FPS/RPG but found a way to remove the parts that would've made the RPG elements more prominent. al-azad posted:Portal - Eh, I dunno The Ball is the closest thing I can think of but I've only played the mod version.

Shining Force 2 is better in almost every respect: better graphics, a more entertaining story, more balanced levelling, more characters, more variety etc. Unfortunately, SFII has actual random battles whereas SFI only let's you repeat the same battles. While that might seem like an improvement, the problem is that most of those random encounters take place on the overworld map. The A.I. in SFII is only slightly less braindead and fighting enemies on a plain map gets boring quickly. It's still the better game overall.
