Fun-time is over.
Something about Seinfeld and a Punch and Judy show or something from Ancient Greece, whichever makes me cooler.

See, it's not that I dislike American comedy. I like It's Always Sunny..., Frasier, The Office (before it got poo poo), and stuff like Wonder Showzen. It's just that Seinfeld and Curb aren't funny. They are just endless repetitions of "I don't understand social foible X" and that just isn't my thing.

EDIT: to be fair, I had better like American comedy because God knows we don't make decent comedy anymore (The Thick of It aside)

If you don't like Seinfeld: whatever, people have different tastes. But to claim it is objectively "poo poo" puts you in a pretty small minority.

If you think Seinfeld is formulaic: this is pretty hard to argue because the characters and almost every storyline on the show were original. I really don't see much similiarity between Cheers and Seinfeld at all. Cheers (and most American sitcoms) was about basically decent people and the dynamics of their relationships, usually ending with some feel-good message where lessons are learned. Seinfeld was about horrible people with no redeeming qualities screwing a bunch of people over. None of them ever learns a lesson or forms a relationship that doesn't end in hatred or death.

If you think Seinfeld was not influential: I guess it's pretty hard to demonstrate what influenced what, but Seinfeld was very popular amongst critics and comedians and ran for a really long time. If you don't think it was influential at all then that also puts you in a pretty small minority.

And obviously there was good comedy before Seinfeld.

Tonight's the Fry & Laurie reunion show, you loving dopey goons

quote:

Fry And Laurie Reunited
9pm, GOLD

Rather than a simple clip show, this is a specially-convened summit between Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, together on screen for the first time in 15 years. It's hard to make much out over the gales of self-deprecation but, over 90 minutes, the friends discuss their working relationship and history together, vamping on some old themes for the benefit of the camera. Fry is never far from our screens, so the real revelation is Laurie, whose less widely exposed wryness is hilarious. At Cambridge the pair met in Fry's room. "A2," says Laurie, "also the Folkestone road . . ."

I'm trying to remember the name of a British TV show. It was a documentary type of thing that would occasionally air on discovery (though it might have aired on other channels as well, I dunno) and it was about a sort of unkempt looking guy trying to become a self sufficient farmer in the British countryside. I remember bits about him trying to raise (and eventually eat) sheep and making his own food and presenting it to a panel of aristocratic judges. It was an innocuous, probably unsuccesful thing but for some reason I loved watching it, but I have no idea what the name was. It aired somewhere in the early 2000s. Can anyone help me out?

I know this isn't the 'do you know what this show was' thread, but I was reading China Mieville's Kraken and was reminded about an urban fantasy on children's TV from the late 80's/early 90's that I think was on ITV. It featured a magical underground/hidden London that was split into four(?) kingdoms, one of which was some sort of 'rubbish' kingdom based in the sewers and that. It may also have featured personifications of London boroughs and/or landmarks. Very Neverwhere-esque. Any ideas?

Edit: Actually, are you talking about Fraggle Rock?

Did anyone watch an odd little show on CITV called Roger and the Rottentrolls? It was a bit past my time on children`s TV but a friend had it on once and it`s a work of genius.

Sorry to drag the whole Seinfeld thing back up, but I think it's pretty good from season four onwards. You need to watch a few before getting into it, which sounds sort of counter-intuitive for a tv programme to be, although it pays off. I hated a lot of shows after watching one or two episodes (mad men, 30 rock, deadwood), then went back to them later and got them. There's a lot of good stuff about.

Part of what I like about british tv though is it rewards general, almost random watching. Traditionally there have been fewer channels therefore more of a chance other people watched oddities that make you bite your fist. Part of what I liked a lot about that children in need retrospective was showing the youtube style clips of rolf harris doing peg the leg or whatever the gently caress.
