I want to live in your fanfic universe where every story has a happy ending, ChibiSoma :smith:

Annie stomps out of the room sobbing, and after a conversation with Kat or one of the teachers, she's cheered up, and comes back into the room to apologize to Reynardine. He's sitting on her bed with his stuffing hanging out a torn stitch, sobbing and groaning in pain. He holds up a lighter. "I thought we were friends, Annie." Then he flicks the lighter and presses the flame to the cotton hanging out his side. Annie beats at him to try to put him out, but it's too late. The eyes of the fox doll melt, destroying Reynardine's spirit, and the burning plastic of his eyes burns Annie's hands, sticking to them like napalm. Her fingers are so damaged they have to be amputated. She can't even hold her blinker stone anymore.

There. Now no matter what happens, you can think to yourself, "oh man, at least it's not as bad as that".

The implications are a bit weirder than just giving life to Annie. I mean you'd imagine if you take life from someone, they die. Sure. Why wouldn't someone come to claim their soul though? It's not her life that Renard seems to be implying she took, but something much closer to her spiritual essence itself. Which would certainly put a different light on people treating her like Surma in the story. It's one thing for creepy people to treat you like your mother because you look like her, and it's another when they treat you like your mother because you sort of ate her soul.

Calling it now, the "fire" was her literal soul. Annie is a sort of ... reincarnation of her mother.

Also it was a court experiment, since Surma was too great a medium to lose. I suspect she was already gravely ill before Annie was born.

Oh totally. It's just a very different type of creepy. To the first you say "Cut the poo poo, I'm not my mother". To the second you say "Cut the poo poo....oh God am I my mother?". And the answer is no, but it's still a mind job. Especially for a little girl.

Nothing to call, that is literally what Renard just said. The reason nobody came to claim her soul is because there was nothing to claim. Annie took it all for herself. It's why she had to do the job herself. She was the one with the claim on it.

I'm not sure about that.

"You know when you had to lead your mother to the afterlife? Yeah, yeah, the worst moment of your life. That was entirely your fault because you were born to devour your mother. And everyone here knew, so you can't trust any of their sentiments as genuine, since you won't know if they're for Surma's murderer, her child, or Surma herself."

That seems to be a point of no return. I would not be surprised if Annie is ripping the doll apart before this is over.

And now we know the meaning behind Reynard's line "and this means... she is gone". He knew what would/had happened between Annie and her mother. He knew that Annie being at the school meant that Surma was dead.

Anyone else picking up on the implication that Anthony deliberately did it as the only way he could think of to save some part of his wife?

Or no, because logically Surma would have picked up on what was happening. Ah, got it. It wasn't her illness, Annie had some kind of magical birth defect and Surma deliberately gave the kid her soul. This had the side effect of gradually draining away her will and passion to live, causing Annie to be raised by an increasingly robotic mother and an absent father just as her emotions are peaking.

Doesn't help that the first time she was in full possession of her emotional faculties was directly after she escorted her mother to the afterlife, which may in itself have been a hallucination/metaphor for the last bit of Surma becoming Annie.

Holy crap this is depressing to think about. Also, this is pretty standard "parent can't stand child who killed other parent" times one million because she's the literal reincarnation of said dead parent. Maybe part of the reason he stays away is because it wouldn't be good for either of them? He can't be a father to her when everything about her down to the soul screams of his dead wife. In his own twisted good way, he's leaving her with people who can be friends and mentors to her naturally.

Edit: This also explains the make up wearing, the old-soul in new-body vibe she gives off half the time, the fact that she's obviously unused to her own emotions...holy poo poo this is brilliant.

Well, and also that he married the love of Reynardine's life.

I'm unclear on how that second link is foreshadowing, though, I still take it the same way: the fact that Annie is transferring in means that Surma has finally died. I guess it'd make it more likely that Kat would like her, but genetics tend to lend to that anyways.

The reason they probably wanted Renard away from Annie despite him being under her control was probably because of this. He literally cannot lie to her and they figured this might happen eventually.

I think it's being implied, especially from when Reynardine first met Annie and knew that Surma was dead, that this is some sort of hereditary thing, and Surma did the same thing to her mother (and so on).

im worried that theyre setting her up to be jotaros future wife or something.
So Reynardine initially tried to kill Annie because he was pissed that she killed Surma right? And he gave up on it because she reminded him too much of her mother?

Annie comes from a line of pheonixes that turned into people.
Annie is going to fail double physics.
