But if you use the original mix of the track, that makes your audience think you're just playing recorded music!

This is a good mix, but uh, you know you're allowed to use the original mix of a song, right? You don't have to use a remix just for the sake of it.

(I mean, I love me some Boys Noize, but his remix of 'Swoon' is pretty pointless, imo. He does nothing interesting with it. Of course, I'm completely gay for the Chemical Brothers, so take that as you will.)
I do know that but thanks for the feedback. I'm gay for the Chemical Brothers as well.

Here is part one (of two) of an epic, four hour & forty minute mix that I did last week for the 3rd Annual Repeal Day Ball, held in DC this past weekend. I mean, I'm aware most people don't know much about DJing but, what is your advice for me? Should I throw in more original mixes next time or should I just be aware of what people expect? I'm honestly curious, I didn't make an effort to use mainly remixes it just kind of happened that way. For example, originally I had the regular Barbara Streisand but I thought the Fare Soldi version flowed better.

If you like the remix better than the original track, play the remix

If you like the original track better, play the original.

What we're getting at is, don't play remixes for the sake of playing remixes.

My old Nuo 5 blew up on me 2 years ago (blown capacitor in the power unit) , got it fixed but repair isn't cheap most of the times, it set me back well over a $100. Sold it off as soon as it came back and bought my current Xone:92.

Just another noobie mix if anyone feels like listening/critiquing (I even made it short so it would be more likely to get a listen!)

this was my first and done in Live, and I know the track listing will probably get a lot of hate but I just picked some songs I liked so I could practice mixing, so the programming wasn't super well thought out or anything.

Enjoy / flame!

I make most of mine in Mixmeister and spin live using a combo of Torq with time-code vinyl and actual vinyl records.

I find it useful to use the Ableton/Mixmeister type programs to find good mix points and song combo's. I end up using a LOT of transitions and tricks from my studio mixes when playing live just because they sounded so good.

Edit: Studio mix! That's the term I was trying to think of. VVVVVVVV

Are you guys making these mixes live for the most part or are you setting them up in a program like Acid or Ableton?

People usually specify when they post the mix.

Pretty much everything I've posted in this thread is a live recording of me playing at a party or club or whatever (I use Traktor Scratch). The one exception is my White Gold hip-hop mix which I did in Ableton Live as a "studio mix."

"Studio mix" was also the term I was looking for. Anyways, thank you, I see a few people specify that they were live mixes from a party/club but a lot of people don't specify anything. I've been mostly recording my live mixes but I wanted to see what options there are for studio mixes, gonna check out MixMeister because I wasn't really feeling Acid Pro, thanks KillerJunglist.
