John Maus if you haven't already checked him out. Beko DSL releases free singles downloads every week that occasionally are really good (sore eros, jamie long, raw thrills, death and vanilla) and sound kinda like what your talking about

Also, I'm a huge Mastodon fan. Any similar bands anyone would recommend?

Check out anything labeled as "alternative" hip-hop over the years. I'd recommend Talib Kweli, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and Kool Keith.

And generally any other metal band from the South will do. Start with Kylesa, Baroness, Zoroaster, and Torche.

I love Talib but I had never heard anything from Kool Keith so I gave that a listen and it's fantastic! Thanks for the excellent recommendations!

And blakout I'm about to give your suggestions a listen as well. Thanks for your help!

The Angelic Process is very similar to Nadja. Jesu did a split with Battle of Mice, and they're great.

there's also a ton of other stuff in that New York/East Coast tip you seem to really dig. You might want to check out RA The Rugged Man, Sadat-X, Masta Ace, and M.O.P. yeah, it's mostly just older stuff but thats kinda where Wu Tang is firmly placed.

jeru the damaja - the sun rises in the east
showbiz and a.g. - goodfellas
black moon - enta da stage
mobb deep - the infamous
smif n wessun - dah shinin

these are all pretty dark/grimy sounding and a good place to move onto after wu

Characteristics - slow builds with lots of squelchy 303 sounds and thumping 4/4 beats for all us club-loving dunderheads. I've got very early acid house from the late 80's and that's too slow for what I'm after. I think this is all clocking in at 130+ BPM.

Oh hey, hi there. Turns out a live version of one of the tracks I already have fits the bill nicely:

The Shamen - Destination Eschaton

I've been digging this very specific sort of retro-'80s pop lately because there have been some killer loving records in that vein (if you like that sort of thing). Specifically, Robyn's Body Talk, Gorillaz Plastic Beach, Mark Ronson's Record Collection. Twin Shadow's Forget. HURTS' Happiness. Neon Neon from a couple of years ago. I like a lot of actual 80s pop too, like Talk Talk, OMD, Human League, etc, but a lot of this recent stuff I find has a much stronger emphasis on a thumping, danceable beat that I really like.

It's kind of strange because I'm not normally a fan of modern electronic music or modern pop music, but I LOVE this particular combination of the two.

What I'm looking for is more along similar lines, with the following caveats:

- It has to be strong and catchy vocally. For example, Crystal Castles have the sound I'm looking for, but their vocals are generally hideous. The Robert Smith cover of their "Not In Love", though, is PERFECT.

- Not really into rap/hip-hop (Gorillaz is about as far as I'll go) but I guess I'd give it a shot.

Any suggestions?
