That is one lucky motherfucker. The driver side compartment is pretty much unscathed but so much for any passenger he may have had... wow. Going to change pace a little here. This is by no means a "horrible" mechanical failure by sheer size. http://i54.tinypic.com/5arv9w.jpg http://i55.tinypic.com/erfqjc.jpg http://i55.tinypic.com/flgg9k.jpg From my fishing reel, this worm gear and a pawl are the main devices that let the line spread evenly on the spool. As you can see, the shaft is about 5mm diameter. I'd been having troubles, as the line would bunch up at one end, and sometimes the entire reel would seize. Decided to pull it apart and found the pawl had been chomping away on the point where the channels cross over, to allow it to travel back on itself. Hopefully doesn't cost too much to repair, but opened it up, saw that and  . I'm actually quite surprised, the internals of the reel mechanism are in great shape considering the abuse I've given it over the years.

You should have seen the drag stack on my Penn GT when I hooked into a big-rear end tuna off Block Island. I had 300 yards of brand new 80# braid (the rod/reel is my bottom fishing/codfish rig), and I refused to let it get stripped. I cranked down on the star drag as hard as I could, and was jerking the rod tip up and down to try and part the 60# mono leader. Finally it broke, but the drag stack (a series of fiber and metal washers) was basically dust and melted/fused metal.

It's easy enough to imagine what happened -- arrogant idiot child takes dad's M5 down the runway, decides to max it out (~200 mph) because all he can see in the dark is more runway in front of him, doesn't take into account that he's going to have to slow down the car at some point. Also he's probably pulled similar poo poo in the past but didn't change the tires since. It's rather sad that he decided to take passengers along.

Edit: I would like to publicly thank Chrysler for the rear end loving design of the Neon's fuel system. A large, tapered o-ring that had a recessed groove cut into it that probably costs a fraction of a cent to make makes for a $750 dollar repair, not including labor, should it ever fail. Wow many people of gotten good at replacing poo poo alts! If you have a lincoln mark vii with a bad alt, give me about 10-15 mins and itll be replaced. Fucker went through em like candy, took it on and off 9 times in one weekend. That time it was the voltage regulator, loving $11 part caused a day and half of misery. Its great in those cars when they fail, I had a full digital dash so I would be driving just fine then come up to a stop sign/light and the dash would go out and the car start trying to stall. So I would throw it into neutral and keep the revs high and do my damnedest to not too badly neutral drop it. I could go everywhere like that, it just sucked so I usually would drive the last mile to my destination and call AAA to get towed home.

There are two videos, a quick edited video that went on the news, and a 14 minute long unedited version getting all the wonderful flaming mayhem.

I think it was redlining his engine trying to get up the icy hill...not the tires. Although, I have heard (Top Gear) that ice and rubber can create a substantial amount of friction.
