Sacha Vierny's being dead didn't tip you off? The really terrible thing is that Criterion actually had the rights at one point, but they lost them, and whenever anyone asks about Greenaway on Facebook the answer is always "nope". It just kills me.

Alright, that's it. I'm too busy and too tired to post specs and covers. Maybe someone else can do it. My thoughts: yet another blah month. Kes is the only purchase for me here. I haven't seen White Material, the others are all ones I like but not enough to buy.

Dammit, what was that Solaris stuff all about? I heard White Material was good but I'm not very interested in the new titles overall. Disappointment a success.

Wow, Sweetie is unexpected, I'll definitely be upgrading that, and probably buying Le Cercle Rouge because Netflix is being incredibly lovely about Criterion blu-rays.

Isn't Blow Out new too, or am I forgetting the announcement for that? Also, I cant believe Sweetie is getting a blu release, I never picked that as a priority release. Still, pretty stoked for that, Blow Out and Kes.

Blow Out was hinted at somewhere or other, can't remember. I think it was one of the cartoons. (edit: I think it was a bird wearing headphones) Solaris was part of a larger beginning-of-the-year megahint, so it could be any time in 2011.

As someone who thought Le Samourai and Army of Shadows were absolutely awesome, would Le Cercle Rouge be a good Melville for me? I'm not familiar at all with Blow Out, but that's a great cover.

I loved Le Samourai and Army of Shadows, but Le Cercle Rouge just did not have the same impact on me. Compared to the other two, Rouge doesn't have the same amount of payoff for all the setup. But it is very much a Melvillian heist movie, down to the elaborate pacing and noir coolness.

Fear and Loathing was my first Criterion and I still love it. Hell, I even went back to watch it again the other day. I hope they also keep the stellar DVD packaging like they did with Videodrome. Speaking of which, I got some new blus today in the mail: Videodrome, The Night of the Hunter, The BBS Story and Cronos. I really wanted to watch Night of the Hunter first because I've never seen it before, but I'm going to save that for my weekend. I decided to dive into the BBS box set first. So far all I've watched were Easy Rider and Head. I've seen Easy Rider before and there's really nothing I can say about it that hasn't already been said. It's a great film with some wonderful performers. Criterion did nice work on the transfer. I also decided to watch Head after that because, why not? It's The Monkeys! I'm not really familiar with The Monkeys though so it was a strange move to let the film Head be my first experience. I kind of liked the film too. It was fun in a classic psychedelic way, much like House. The whole film was like an episode of Monty Python played out as a dream. It's rather dated, but I still enjoyed it for what it had to offer. I just remembered that I still have Criterions at home that I bought during the previous B&N sale that I haven't watched yet (Secret Honor, Fishing with John and Mishima). Looks like I got a lot of catching up to do. EDIT: Spelling Macrame_God fucked around with this message at 07:12 on Jan 15, 2011 |

Quick question -- for the Criterion DVD's with the old lettered logo, if they get upgraded to Blu-Ray, the Blu-Ray edition would have the new C logo, right? Is it a full replica of the original cover? Also, if the original DVD (Solaris) is a big ugly awkward box, is it a possibility that they would change the packaging?
|
# ? Jan 16, 2011 16:24 |

Yes, and probably, though I don't think they'll change the art, just crop it down (which is too bad, because it's awful).

Magic Hate Ball posted:Yes, and probably, though I don't think they'll change the art, just crop it down (which is too bad, because it's awful). Yeah, the Solaris cover art is pretty terrible, to be honest. I have hopes that at the very least the packaging will be different to save bulkiness. I was also curious as to whether or not they had any Blu-Rays they've done that with... and I guess I should ask about the packaging of Fear and Loathing, since it has the similar clunky box thing going on.
