Yes, something good to watch again on Friday nights (or Saturday mornings for some of us). Bill Maher is back with a new season of Real Time. Season 8 "recap", but mostly just a strange music video mash up thing. Episode 198: January 14th season 9 premiere's guests: Elizabeth Warren: Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau James Carville: Liberal pundit Mike Murphy: Conservative pundit Chrystia Freeland: Global Editor-at-large for Thomson Reuters Martin Short: Actor, comedian, SNL alum ------------------ Bill Maher was on Jay Leno on Jauary 11th where his most noted comments were on the 2nd amendmant and guns. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/12/bill-maher-leno-nra-gun_n_807914.html As usual, Maher gets a little excited and says something silly like changing the name of the NRA to "The Assassin's Lobby". TAL just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Carville's super ornery tonight. CAJUN STYLE!

That was a pretty good episode. The most Canada talk I've heard in an episode too (forgot that Short is a Canadian). Carville is a bit too much for me. I think he's making good points, but it comes out as crazy babble.

The...quality...of "right" guests has really gotten much worse in this last season or so. I think this is the first time a panelist had to go as far as getting out of the blasted chair to get a word in. If Maher is having such a hard time finding "established people on the right" to come on, just dial them down period until they can simmer down a tad and bring on fringe characters of different stripes in their place---people that can at least avoid the interruption barrage of this Moore guy so much of the ep isn't just a cacophony of yelling from all sides.

That first interview felt a bit strange. Maybe they're just really familiar with each other so there were no formalities. And I still don't know what Russell's book is about. Next week: D.L. Hughley, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), Ex-Canadian PM Kim Campbell , conservative journalist Will Cain.

God, Kingston is a loving moron. And props to Hughley for saying:"You're making me feel good about my GED." Although, following it up by saying you don't believes in evolution puts him squarely in the moron camp with Kingston.

Yeah, that was pretty embarrassing to watch. It's okay, though. Next week he's going to make up for it by having Neil deGrasse Tyson on the show.

Korak posted:Maher complaining about NASA's budget and goals or "Why would I want these shitheads to live forever?" is really going to put a damper on the greatness that is Neil DeGrasse Tyson. If there is anyone I want to see tear into Maher for his anti-science bullshit, it's Tyson. We're talking about someone who deals with ignorance constantly through public panels.

It seems like he's been avoiding the antiscience stuff recently (going back into the latter part of the last season) and he listed NASA as a good thing about the US in the last episode. Maybe he's learned.

NASA has plenty of bad things about it that are worth complaining about. They're also the most badass at so comparatively speaking nobody should (or often does) care. edit: Also, that line "Your meal costs less than gum." about the Taco Bell fiasco made me laugh. So no one has anything to say about the latest episode? I thought it was kind of uncomfortable. Bill Maher's interview with the (gorgeous) Egyptian reporter lady who's name I forget right now had a kind of uncomfortable moment in the middle, and I was a bit disappointed that Anthony Weiner really didn't say much of substance, since I usually like hearing him debate things. Weiner would have been much better suited on a panel with two republicans.

Yeah Mona Eltahawy's been all over the place the past couple weeks with good info, but Bill trying to paint the Muslim Brotherhood as part of the shadowy Islamist cabal really fell flat and made him look like a fool. Then again there hasn't yet been any American who has said anything worth listening to about the Egypt thing, because we don't know poo poo about poo poo.

Bill really seems to go out of his way to poo poo on Islam. I'm an atheist too, and there's a ton of things about Islam I don't like, but somehow Bill Maher just sounds like a douche when he talks about it. Maybe it's his face or something...

Jesus Christ, Cornel West is the most charismatic and smooth human being I have ever watched speak. Every single thing he says, no matter how unimportant, is just delivered like poetry

God, I really can't stand Huffington (even though I think the website is a pretty good news aggregator). And yes, West is a warrior poet!

Cornel West makes any show better! If there's one thing I can thank Maher for it's introducing me to him. Also a decade after it even matters I'm starting to like Matthew Perry.

The anti-porn new rule was pretty weak. Didn't even pick the low lying fruit of people getting too fat to be sexy or mention that it being easier to just jerk-off might not be entirely the dude's fault. Really though it just seemed like a generic stand-up bit with no teeth or commentary on anything even remotely pertinent The episode was still made great by West though, guy has a gift for word play and oration

I don't always agree with Cornel West but he is one of the best guests ever on these kinds of shows. Need him, Neil Degrasse Tyson, and a fired-up Anthony Wiener all at the same time.

This episode flowed better than last week, but yeah the final new rule was pretty weak. I guess they wanted to make it love-themed since Valentine's Day is coming up.
