The Arcade Fire is one of those bands that I've sort of vaguely liked for a while but not quite enough to actually own anything by them. That whole album is pretty good actually, hooray for new (to me) music!

This too:The Wilderness Downtown an pretty cool interactive video thing for "We Used to Wait".

This is The Black Page, all 3 versions, as performed by a really talented drummer for his final drum exam dissertation.

The Black Page is a piece (3 pieces really) written By Frank Zappa. Originally The Black Page was written as a drum Solo for Terry Bozzio. After practicing it for about 6 or 7 weeks, Terry was able to play it. Then Frank took that solo, and wrote a melody to go along with it. This was the Black Page #1.
Then Zappa, realizing that not all members of his listening audience might be so hip to be able to groove along to such a rythmically dense song, rewrote it to be a little more easy on the ears, and that is the Black Page #2.

This kid does all 3.

If you can get your hands on Zappa in New York, there are definitive versions of the Solo followed by #1. My favorite version of #2 is on Baby Snakes.

I have gotten hooked by this piece in a big way lately, and I think I must have listened to it at least 50 times in the last couple weeks. The more you listen, the more you can make sense of the melody, and the more you make sense of the melody, the more the solo makes sense.

For as dense and rythmically insane as it is, I think technically much of it is in 4/4 time, with the complexity coming from the multiple overlaid triplets and quatrets layered within the time signiture. Or I could just be full of poo poo, I don't know. But I can't stop listening to this.

EDIT:

For Something much more accesible, here is Eat That Question, off of The Grand Wazoo. George Duke with a loving kicking keyboard intro and solo, and Zappa flying on guitar.

There's two things you need to know about Jason Mraz:
1. He's so much more talented than I'm Yours would have you believe.
2. He's infinitely better live.

I wish he was still writing songs like he did back when he was still playing in coffee shops and bars. After Mr. A-Z, he embraced the image he has today and it's just frustrating.
