Not at this stage. They’re roughly 2 years into development. Dragon Quest VII went through development hell; they’re not going to repeat that.

Thanks for making this thread.

I've played Dragon Quests 1 through 5 and I also played 9. I'm working on the DS version of 5 now and I have a copy of 6 ready to go when I'm finished with that.

I would looove to play 7 but the prospect of playing a Dragon Quest on my TV after all these fantastic handheld ports is a huge turnoff for me.

If they decide to port 7 to the DS or the 3DS though... :a2m:

Somewhat related, I've noticed that DQ is like the one remaining JRPG franchise where they arbitrarily rename large numbers of major characters when they translate the games to English. Not that it makes a huge difference, but I kinda wish they wouldn't do that--even though I've played most of the DQ games at some point in time I always get confused in these sorts of threads because I never know what characters other people are referencing and vice versa. :(

Aren't a lot of the recent changes just reverts from the late-80s trend of having to fit longer words into fewer characters + westernizing stuff?

I'm fine with changes if they're puns on par with DQIX.

Probably because a lot of the Japanese names are just plain stupid (Loto vs. Erdrick as mentioned earlier for an example). This is due to the Japanese having a generally quirky sense of humor I assume. I'm actually very glad the U.S translators have been making the silly humor into something well...humorous over here in the more current games, such as with 9.

I've noticed it mentioned a couple of times, but it needs to be stated in no uncertain terms: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is by far and away one of the best DS games and DQ games available.
Take the battle system of DragonQuest, the monster collecting of Pokemon and the breeding/fusing of a ShinMegami game and throw it into the same graphics engine as DQ9 and you've got one of the most under-appreciated gems of the past few years.
I'd imagine it's pretty hard to find nowadays, but if you're interested in any of the games it borrows it's concepts from, you're going to love it.

One specific example of DQ7's grindiness: the fastest way to get into the Hero class (the all-rounder advanced class the game hypes up in several places, the requirements of which are mastering any 3 intermediate or advanced classes) requires you to master the warrior, fighter, cleric, paladin, dragoon and godhand classes (and godhand has better skills anyway). That takes 1075 battles (more if you accidentally hit an area's level cap on the way up, which prevents you from leveling classes there) plus another 200 to master it. The summoner class takes 1435 to get into and another 250 to master. Note that both of those assume you started right out going straight for those classes. Then there's the monster classes, which require a monster heart to get into (megarare drops (a couple can only be gotten this way and are needed for the top end classes) or hours of playing lucky panel in the casino) and then have their own hierarchy to go through to get the best ones, culminating in platking, which is basically having a top end metal slime on your team.

It took nearly all of my MP, a dozen or more herbs, a couple amor essences, a magic water and a little luck, but I managed to defeat Murdaw. At least this time. I actually don't care for the DQ cliche of beating the boss early in the game only to have to repeat the battle near the end, but now I can move on. My characters all his level 17 before the final battle except for Ashlynn who was still <9.

This is the first DQ game where I actually am stopping to be impressed at the level design. The Towers of Mirrors were really neat, and the darkened approach to Murdaw was frustrating but rewarding to puzzle out finally.

Forget Sap; use Double Up. Sacrificing your own defense is no big deal when you can hit hard enough to one-shot the bastards. Just don't try it too often when there's a big group, as you'll only kill one and then get pummelled by the others if your team can't play cleanup. But the Sizzle spell those Arrghoyles fling is devastating that early in the game, so the risk is very much worth getting rid of them.

What do you think it was that lead me to buying DQM: Joker in the first place ;)
I loved the original DQM games, especially with their rogue-like, randomly generated levels and encounters, but on a whole, Joker just really tied everything together in a more comprehensive package. All the systems were there and refined to a greater degree, plus the fully 3d rendered monsters and environments really gave you a great sense of scale and wonder that even the more wildly successful pokemon games have yet to fully realize.

DQ6's job system was great--it was balanced just so that by the time you got to the end of the game your main was probably a Hero and everyone else had mastered one or maybe two advanced classes. DQ7 took that and went way too far with it. The balance was still OK since the game was so (too) long but it was decidedly too much of a good thing.

Not a very big fan of the main series, always felt it was a bit draggy with too much grinding. Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters on the other hand were two delightful games. The breeding system takes the Pokemon recipe and churns it into something continuously exciting. You'll never have to chuck your old monster into a virtual box because he's not useful anymore. Just mate him with another useless monster and you'll have a new, more powerful monster :neckbeard:

Didn't really find Joker to be as fun. Made about halfway through the game, it was in dire need of a ridiculous 'rescue the kingdom' plot. Maybe I'll give it a try again soon.

That’s still not a very good reason or even argument for slapping it with a 7.

The irony is that I think a 7 would be a fair score if reviewers actually used the full 1-10 scale. Instead, they use the scale like high school grades, where 7 is average, rather than 5 being average like it should be. Instead, a 7 is more or less the kiss of death.

Vegetable posted:

Depends on the game. The early ones and VII are built entirely around grind. IV, V, VI, and VIII you can get through without grinding at all. IX is a hybrid: you don’t really have to grind to beat the main story, but the postgame is one gigantic unending grind.
