Mullen was really stubborn, and clung to his style, while street was being marketed as the next thing. Oh sorry, guess my sarcastic gauge is off......I understand he was kind of a weird guy and probably had no interest, but it's fun to think about what he could have accomplished had he evolved with the sport rather than just staying where he was. I can't imagine he was making a whole lot of money dominating the freestyle scene, he would have been making a poo poo ton of money if he just moved on.

WHATEVS SISTER posted:Whoa, rough. Get better soon! (You know you gotta tell the story!) The story is basically that I was tired and kept skating. Then I tried to fakie big spin into a nose slide and it all fell apart. It's funny how skaters turn into Ph.Ds in the middle of a crisis. "Can you move it? Yeah? Then you're fine, bro" *skates off* Truthfully, though, the dudes at Inner Space got me Advil and ice as quickly as possible which was nice. Things like that don't exist at outdoor parks.

Heal soon brother, good advice to people who are just starting to skate though. When you're loving tired, rest up, or fear the (obviously brutal) wrath of the ankle gods.

Having snapped a tendon in my ankle when I was 21, I can safely say be really loving careful with your ankles because being in crutches for 9 months and being told you'd never run again sucks. Two years after that and I was on a skateboard and doing parkour and rock climbing and running but man it's not worth risking the luck. I'm glad your ankle isn't permafucked!

UFOTofuTacoCat posted:...from my perspective back in the day street skating and freestyle skating were on two just two separate things. Street was pretty cool, vert was cooler and freestyle was the least cool of all. Freestyle was difficult to comprehend, boring and had hardly any style. Lamest of all it was performed entirely on flat ground. Hopping around on the end of you board while standing on your truck, what the poo poo? it's a skateboard not a pogo stick. Coming up in the 90s (and on Eastern Long Island, not exactly a vibrant skate culture, although we had the internet and my friend's Transworld sub) we really didn't even know freestyle was a thing. My friends and I always thought that street was coolest, and even when we played Tony Hawk games we would always try to put together "flat" lines rather than using every bowl and whatnot. Of course, at the same time, we always used to play as Mullen and land everything in manuals. So yeah, I guess what I'm trying to say is that Freestyle and Street merged to the point where my friends and I, at least, didn't know there was a difference between them. Man I miss those days. I could never actually skate at all, but every group of skaters needs the guy following them on a bike with the camera, right? (And by camera I meant some old busted-rear end monstrosity that recorded directly onto VHS.) Inspector_666 fucked around with this message at 01:35 on Jan 26, 2011 |

Honestly one of the best little clips - he just seems to cruise around hitting whatever happens to be in his way. Amazing trick selection and style. His alley-oop 50-50 variations and the noseblunt up the box are particular stand outs. Most importantly, it looks fun and it makes you want to skate.

Just picked up a longboard deck from a budy, 4 hole, looking for trucks and wheels but I dont want to get those CNC badass joints. Theres 11' of elevation in my city so ill never see a hill. Whats the best bang for my buck?

How wide is your deck? A 9.5" deck would be useless with 7.75" trucks, and 90mm wheels would be useless on trucks that ride low. I'd probably go for at least wheels like these on account of their size and softness; I've got some 78a skateboard wheels and it's like rolling on clouds. If you're not somewhere with big hills, you're probably not going to need to slide anywhere near as much so softer is just straight up more comfortable but dude I'm not a longboarder so my knowledge is kind of less good than it could be.

Get a set of Randall II or Paris trucks. They're both cheap and awesome for what you pay. Whalley's wheel suggestion is perfect though you can go much cheaper than something from Abec 11. That's gonna be a boring ride though, if you think you're ever going to go beyond just pushing your deck around town (There's a poo poo ton of tech/flip/slide tricks you can do with a longboard on flat) do yourself a favour and buy a set of yellow Durians. They're really fun and easy to work at low speeds. *edit* I should clarify, a common trapping with longboards is to become obsessed with gear. It doesn't matter, in the end, what you ride because it's about your skill. As long as you don't wheelbite, you're golden. Zigmidge fucked around with this message at 02:56 on Feb 15, 2011 |

I really like that tape; gently caress, I like the shape of that deck too. When I eventually pick up a cruiser deck, I'm totally going hog wild on the tape and octopus loving rule. I don't know where a good place to get specific longboard gear is, but these would be a good fit for your board. I'm a whore for Thunder trucks though. These Bennett trucks might be a better match if you want something that looks unique; they'll ride higher than standard skateboard trucks which might be better for you. These wheels are cheap and would be a great ride; they should fit comfortably under either of those trucks too, and if I'm wrong, risers are loving cheap.

On a board like that you should be running much narrower trucks than 180, maybe some Independent 139 or 149; and I'd put wheels around 60-70mm, depending on trucks and risers. What properties do you want in your wheels? My most recent setup (barely had time on it due to poo poo weather) is a CR Boardworks custom, 34x9.5, with SurfRodZ IndeeSZ spaced to 187mm, and some 71mm 80a Venom Sidewinder wheels that I've worn to about 62-64mm. If the trucks are a lot wider than the board, you'll lose a lot of leverage. Maybe you should try some 150mm trucks like Paris, Randal, Caliber, and many others. They'd probably be closer to the width of the deck, but be a little wide, and very carvy Got one of these showing up Thursday... I don't know what to try to learn first.
