Ugh, I wish I'd bought DQ6 in Japanese like a year ago. I know Barbara was a more common name in 1995 or whatever, and it's not now, but Ashlynn? Are you serious? What kind of a name is Ashlynn?

I agree that renaming Barbara to Ashlynn is a bad decision, but there’s pun value. Red hair = fire = ashes = ASHlynn. She also learns Madante/Magic Burst which pretty much reduces enemies to cinders, so there are some more ashes.

I think it’s interjecting a pun where a pun need not go, sort of like renaming Flora to Nera in DQ5 (still not sure what the Nera pun is, to be honest) while leaving Debora and Bianca’s names intact and punless. That’s one of my few complaints about the current DQ localization team, their inconsistent treatment of party members’ names.

Also her town burned to the ground so more ashes. Renaming Hassan to Carver (also a bad decision IMO) has pun value too since he's a carpenter's son.

Yeah the Japanese DQ games abound in lovely puns but not in the names usually.

I dunno, I think people just assume you have to grind to level 99 or something to beat the game. I beat DQ viii my main character was maybe level 38 and no one even had 100 in their skills yet. I made my monster teams do most of the leg work though the last castle.

Well I finally got access to Alltrades, and it only took getting my poo poo pushed in by Murdaw one and a half times (one full-blown wipe out with the second attempt coming down to a half-dead Carver and Milly with 1 MP). Is class changing in DQ6 similar to DQ3 where most any mix of classes/roles will serve you well short of making everyone a Goof-Off?

Certain combinations will make certain dungeons or bosses more difficult, but nothing will hamstring you to the point of failure... except, of course, for that aforementioned Goof-Off party.

Seems so. My only suggestion would be to get your melee fighters trained in Martial Arts until they learn Roundhouse Kick because that's a pretty awesome ability that hits an entire group for 0 MP, so it turns their best weapon into an effective whip. Pretty much every fighting class comes with useful skills though.

I haven't used much magic. I've been relying on the Staff of Ghent for healing 90% of the time, and most of my brawlers do far more damage with their weapons then my best mage can do with her second best spell (though Magic Burst is awesome for special occasions.) Even with Sage mastered, her spell damage lags behind the hero and Carver.

That being said, even classes like Gadabout and Merchant aren't useless.

This is why I made Ashlynn an Armamentalist; Kafrizzle is totally worth the effort.

We're all going to make fun of you for ever using the run away command. Actually though, I have tried to use it from time to time and it's been pretty bad in almost every DQ game, including when I tried to use it when I accidentally wandered into somewhere high level in VI yesterday. I like that though, it means that your party is potentially in danger if you screw up.

I'm more proud than I really should be that I never ran from a fight in DQ9. I think it resulted in some kind of achievement because whenever Stella isn't gibbering about some random accomplishment I just attained, she talks about my never running from a fight. I just fired up DQ9 to check and she says, "I know you'd rather be beaten than beat a retreat, but I never thought you'd get away with not escaping once. Stellar!"

I tried doing the same in DQ6 but it didn't last long. I had to run from some fights in Murdaw's castle before my first (failed) attempt against him in order to conserve what precious little MP I had left. If only I'd known at the time that Ghent's Staff acts as a free Midheal and that your party is fully healed before the Murdaw fight.

Yeah, I've run a few times in DQ6. Most particularly from those mud monsters in Murdaw's castle who spawn in groups of three or four and love to spam Whack.

Really, a frequently-appearing monster that spawns in large numbers and casts a relatively effective instant death spell is just plain mean. They made me suffer my first total party kill in a Dragon Quest game in a long time.

I had more problems with the Arghgoyles since they spam Sizzle. A monster that does 30-40 HP damage to everyone per turn that early in the game is seriously a dick move, especially since it's possible to run into fights with two Arghgoyles plus other monsters.

The lack of money is offset by there being so little to buy. The Prince of Cannock's best weapon is the iron spear, which is available in the town right after you recruit him. The Princess's best weapon is a guaranteed drop from a monster in the dungeon of Midenhall. Armor is pretty easy to come by and you can hand down Midenhall's gear to Cannock as you acquire Erdrick's equipment.

Love 1-5, though, with graduating levels of love with each progressive title. Can't do DQ7 or 8 at work, but have those planned as well. I've been on a DQ kick since I picked up DQVI last week, and it made me curious about whatever happened with DQ Monsters Joker 2, whether or not it was getting released over here. Since it's been at least a year since it came out in Japan I figured we're pretty much never getting it, but I just learned that Japan's getting some special edition of the game called Joker 2 Professional, and holy poo poo. They're adding a veritable assload of DQ9 monsters to the game, as well as some new areas apparently, and it just looks spectacular! Here's the trailer, I guess be warned that it shows off a few DQ9 bosses, including the final one. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll release this version over here? It's probably a bit too late in the DS's lifespan but I can hope, right? :smith:

If you're not a whore for loot, play VI first. It's a great game, but a bit less substantial and bit more dated.

when it was released 6 was amazing because it was a huge leap over 4 and 5 in graphic, music, and gameplay quality, now that it's rereleased, it's gameplay isn't all that much better then the 4 or 5 remakes and the music and graphic quality are basically the same. Still a good game though in my opinion.

Edit: I guess what I'm saying is that 4 and 5 felt like actual remakes whereas 6 was just a graphical face lift more or less.

Also 9 owns.

DQ2 Progress Update--I've got the Prince (Artho for me) and am working on recovering the item to turn a dog into a Princess. This game is grindy as gently caress, but to be honest that doesn't bother me so much. There are a couple of reasons. First, I grew up playing Dragon Warrior games on Nintendo, so it seems normal to me. One of my proudest moments was waking up early one day, popping in Dragon Warrior, and managing to beat the last boss before I had to head out for school. Second, when I play these games now, I am kind of looking for something monotonous and low-involvement. I am often listening to music when I play RPGs, so I don't mind if it's kind of repetitive because I am just trying to kind myself mildly occupied while I focus on something else. I can kind of see why this game might get hate, though--it seems like the simplicity of DQ1 without the greater complexity and in-depth storylines you get by the time DQ4 rolls around.

No matter when you go, you'll still have to endure the weakening and no-way-home, so you might as well get it over with ASAP. The Thief skill Padfoot will help you avoid fights; for the fights you can't avoid, either run or use items like the Sunderbolt Blade and Staff of Ghent, as they won't be affected by your cruddy stats. There is a way out of the Dread Realm, and you'll need to find it to lift the debilitating curse; ask around in Desparia, but don't look in pots or talk to demons.

I just fought my way to Mortamor. The bastard killed my primary healer in the first round. The rest of A-squad doesn't survive the next two rounds as a result, so the second string came in and barely managed to kill the son of a bitch, with about 13 HP remaining spread between three characters.

I played a little Dragon Quest IX, but got preoccupied with other games and didn't get too far. The little bit I did see, though, I loved. I said it in the DQIX thread, but it reminds me of Earthbound with the humor and gameplay, and I've been looking for a game like that for a long time.

So anyway, I just got the V and VI remakes for my birthday (V was a used copy with no case, but from what I hear, not much else is available). Started up V, and I already really enjoy it. I love how they named the spells and abilities, and with V I love how the battle screen has the enemies facing the camera, though I miss being able to see armor ala IX. I have a few questions about the series in general though.

-Something about monsters joining your party? This sounds very exciting to me. Is it as good as it sounds, or is it filler content?

-On that same note, the Dragon Quest Monster games sound even more exciting to me, for the same reason I love Pokemon. Should I really start that series with the GBC games, or is starting with the DS one (DQM:Joker) fine?

-When people talk about Party Chat, are they referring to when I hit the X or Y button? I'm assuming it gets more interesting when I have more party members than some little girl.

-What's up with the DQ/DW thing? Is it like Final Fantasy III/VI, where it was a localization thing, or is there more to it?

It's pretty unbelievable to me that I've never played a DQ game, especially with how much I like RPG's in general. But better late than never I suppose.
