'People on Sunday' came with the latest issue of 'The Believer.' Pretty bare, just the movie on a DVD, but possibly the reason there's a thread for it. And yes, it is very, very, very good.

Ohh I like the Ichikawa and Matarazzo is pretty cool. I like Insignificance a lot too, it's cute. The Malles are good but not very interesting releases.

Random thoughts after seeing covers/specs: Insignificance: Kinda like that cover. Theresa Russell is an instant negative, though, and I'm not on board the Gary Busey train. Also the plot description isn't grabbing me at all. Definitely a rental, with low expectations. Makioka: Awful cover, and only a trailer? I don't expect this to live up to Revenge of a Kabuki Actor, but hopefully it will have some of Ichikawa's stylistic flourishes. Kiss Me Deadly - Good cover idea, lousy implementation. Silver/Ursini commentaries are always good. I guess I'll go ahead and buy it, fingers crossed that I'll appreciate it more this time. People on Sunday - Pretty good cover. Decent extras, but I'm still undecided. As much as I liked it, I'm usually less motivated to rewatch silents. Zazie - I assume that's some sort of original poster art, but it's hideous. However, the movie definitely sounds promising, and I've been wanting to see it for ages. Black Moon - This could be great or it could be horrible. I'm intrigued by anything Nykvist works on, but it sounds/looks kinda hippy-dippy. Matarazzo - Awful color scheme on the packaging. This is the kind of release that reminds me I'm far from a "film buff". Looking forward to it.

You'll appreciate Kiss Me Deadly a lot more if you realize that the lead character is meant to be totally repulsive. It's a lot more perverse and weird than some people give it credit for.

People on Sunday looks interesting. Great to see everything is dual format since I was expecting it to be DVD-only since it's a silent. Mont Alto never disappoints with scores. Is it just me or the quality of Criterion covers has been decreasing as of late? There was a time that I used to like every single cover they released. Recently, there has been only a few that I really like. And the new Solaris edition, for example, has a much worse cover. The original Black Moon poster is quite great.

Sweet, The Killing is a day one pre-order for me too. Warner's Kubricks are generally excellent other than the lack of original mono mixes on A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket, plus the weak supplements on Eyes Wide Shut. Dr. Strangelove is perfect except for leaving off the brilliant trailer. I'd love to see Spartacus picked up, though.

What are the chances of Criterion putting some of Kubrick's early shorts in as bonus material, or even Fear and Desire for that matter? I don't expect them to be anything to piss myself over but it seems like a Criterion thing to do (thinking of the ones on the Breathless and Last Metro bonus discs), especially for a director of Kubrick's stature.

My prediction is a double feature of Killers Kiss with Fear and Desire. The latter is being restored and a re-release is expected. They shouldn't have any problems licensing Day of the Fight and Flying Padre from Warner as extras since they've done it in the past.
