I just got my Leopold with Cherry MX browns with the unprinted keys, and I love this keyboard. In fact, I like it a lot more than the Filco with Cherry MX blues that I had previously for a couple of reasons.

I really like that the switch takes less effort to activate and that I can actually take this one to work and not drive everyone near me insane. The keyboard really isn't that loud unless you bang on the keys. If you press super lightly (not realistic for normal typing) you can actually get by without making any noise at all, whereas that's impossible with the blue switches obviously.

The blank keycaps are pretty cool too, though getting the symbols will take a tiny bit of time to master. Not a big deal as I already have had most of them down through years of touch typing, and the all black aesthetic is awesome. A red ESC key would be cool, as would some different colored keys for WASD. The Leopold's keys are not as smooth as the Filco's. In fact they're a little bit rough, but that's not exactly a bad thing.

The build quality of the two are comparable, though if I had to pick one, I'd say that the Filco has a slightly better construction. It feels a tiny bit sturdier if you're picking it up and moving it around, but when they're on the desk, neither move (they both have good feet). The detachable USB cable is really nice, especially since I plan to take this back and forth to work and home, at least for the time being if I decide to order another one of these.

No more typing on a wireless Apple keyboard at work for me! On that note, I have both a pristine Filco with cherry blues and an Apple wireless keyboard for sale if anyone is interested.

That overclock.net thread says MX Blacks are the best for gaming, so why don't all the gaming keyboards come with those like the SteelSeries do?

What causes the price differences in these keyboards? It couldn't be the type of keys because they're all over the place. I probably only need the blacks, but is there anything making the Day Keyboard with browns $35 more than the SteelSeries?

The best place to check for buying information is geekhack's keyboard forum. They have a lot of posters who lean more toward the collector/hobby side so they tend to pick up whatever from the latest sources. You will see a lot of people posting actual impressions, with pictures, of their keyboards. The posters also tend to be regulars so if problems crop up a few or many months down the line they will post about it. They are a generally welcoming/helpful bunch, but they also tend to group think a bit against certain models due to purely aesthetic reasons. A great example is they all gushed about the ducky due to its solid feature set and key caps until they decided its logo was ugly and a few users had complaints about the case quality.

pchome.com.tw is where I got my ducky from. They often have $10 international shipping, and their things generally arrive in under a week. Across the globe. If you use google translator "Tea" is browns, but they show the switch type in the pictures.

armygroup.com.tw is another fairly popular place.

overclock.net was selling some overclock branded ducky 9000s. The 9000s have solid build quality compared to the 1087 or any 1xxx series ducky. They were selling them at a fairly competitive price if I remember correctly. Not sure if they still are.

If you live in australia: http://mechkeyboards.com/products.html

I have a ducky 1087 and I will be the first to tell you that the case is sketchy. The case on mine was slightly warped which forced me in to modding the feet on one side. I used some form of adhesive to increase the height slightly. You could use an envelope if you just don't care. I used one for a few months until I got around to modding it. There have been some issues with the multi-part design having parts raise or sink in. Some people have keys that appear a bit crooked if you use non-black key caps, but it doesn't impact typing.

On the positive side it types identical to a more expensive keyboard, the key caps are a nice quality, and I am confident it will last as long as any other mech keyboard. Still, unless you can get one for less than a leopold, or you can get a ducky 9000, I'd probably just get a leopold because they are sort of available in the US right now and probably have better build quality than the 1xxx ducky boards.

You can use any switch for gaming and do fine. Browns will feel completely alien in fps games at first if you aren't used to them. Blues might as well. Once you are used to them they are all even, but different people will prefer a different switch. Razer went with MX Blues because they have a force requirement similar to dome keyboards and will feel most natural in usage testing. Browns have an adaptation period for a lot of people because you will accidentally brush against keys at first. Blacks, due to their nature, probably don't take much time to adapt to but feel unique.

If the keyboard uses a cherry mx switch: Different brands have different pricing in different regions due to shipping and availability. Different models have different pricing due to quality or features. Key cap quality changes price quite a bit usually, and case quality changes price quite a bit as well. For some reason a lot of models don't offer 6kro (usb) / nkro (ps2) despite it only adding about a dollar to the cost per keyboard.

Topre costs a lot because it doesn't use cherry mx switches.

Normal keyboards are fine. If you find they are holding you back in some way or you are burning through them quickly then you might want a mechanical. If you want a certain look or feel or to have a product that will last you half a decade or more than you also might want a mechanical. For the average user there's no performance difference. Gaming wise, professional fps/rts players generally use $10-$20 dome keyboards. Mechanical keyboards are taking off in gaming, but it's more of a consistency thing than "it will make me better!" (it won't.)

Around 50 on a lovely flap laptop keyboard. Every single key was perfectly flat, so it was impossible to do any kind of touch typing without missing keystrokes.

My typing speed is normally in the 80s on regular non-mechanical boards, but I am a hell of a lot more accurate with the leopold (and 75wpm is without looking at the board at all). I should try and see how fast I type while looking at the board on occasion.

I'd include the MS sidewinder KBs in the OP revamp - they seem pretty popular/well liked on the egg and amazon, and are pretty cheap as far as gaming keyboards go. There's also the steelseries mechanicals for fans of the clack.

I've owned a Logitech Wave for 4 years now, and it is honestly starting to fall apart a bit - the keys have gotten louder/ less responsive and the layout can be a bit of pain sometimes for gaming - the small, rounded ctrl key being a big offender in that regard. I'm not much of one for multimedia keys, so most of those go pretty unused except for the highly useful mute, volume rocker and calculator buttons. It was pretty comfy for everyday/ typing use though, and the wrist rest is the best I've ever had the pleasure to use, bar none.

Returning to the Sidewinders - any goons use/buy them? The x6 seems pretty sweet with the detachable 10 key - I could see it being very useful to have more keys on my WASD hand side both ingame and out. Its on the top of my list to replace the bedraggled wave, since most every other gaming keyboard is a lot pricier and I don't see much use for an LCD. Mechanicals are out for me as the gf assures me I will get strangled to death if I buy anything loud.

You realize that only Cherry MX Blue and buckling spring keyboards are loud, right? The steelseries uses Cherry MX Black switches, which do not have an audible click. They would only be loud if you bottom out the key really hard. They also supposedly don't feel good for regular typing as the switch is linear, so you don't feel anything when you actuate the key.

If you're interested in mechanical keyboards, but don't want the click, check out keyboards with brown switches.

Same goes for IBM Model Ms. I'm on my second after my first was assassinated by a can of sprite, and I have no inclination to get another type of keyboard. I guess in the M's case, it goes without saying that it's one of the best.

It's pure distilled keyboard. It's layout was so popular that it continues to be used to this day. No flashy lights, no macro keys, no useless media keys. It's beige, like everything else was back then. Because of the way the keys were made, the letters will never wear off. It does one thing, and it does it the best.

The vast majority of the surviving models are in perfect condition after a quarter century of use, and they likely won't wear out any time soon.

I can't answer any questions about black/red switches really, because I've never used them. Just going on reviews I've read elsewhere. Geekhack is a great place to browse. It's conceivable that a standard Dell keyboard would be more comfortable for extended typing sessions, and if so due to lighter keys.

You can't really go wrong with either blue or brown switches (depending on noise/force requirements) no matter what you're doing, so that's a good place to start. Topre switches also get a lot of praise, but are really expensive.

Give it a bit of time before you completely disregard it. I have both a board with blues and one with browns, and I use them both (home/work) and enjoy them both.

Try teaching yourself to type on the board based just on the feel of the actuation and not letting the keys completely bottom out. To me, that's one of the biggest advantages of the tactile keys -- you don't have to move the key all the way down when you're typing and it's just more controlled that way. Hard to replicate on a board that's non tactile.

Also: I have tiny hands. My netbook keyboard is comfortable for me. The middle finger on my right hand is only 3 inches long and my palms are 3ish inches across. I always wondered if I should get a children's keyboard despite the laugh-at-me factor.

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT: Here's the case in question- I don't expect to ever find anything else this color.

I have a feeling I know the answer to this question already, but does anyone know if it's even possible to find a physical showroom in the U.S. that carries mechanicals? I'd like to try out the different types of switches before dropping a c-note on one if at all possible.

I do far more typing (programmer) than I do gaming, so I'm looking for something with minimal force necessary to activate they keys, but I don't want to be crippled when I do play games. Assuming I can't actually get my hands on one without shelling out, would you say a keyboard with mx browns is probably my best bet?
