Just chiming in to say that I saw Red Desert for the first time the other day and I can't remember the last time I've seen a film this visually astounding. I was hooked right from the beginning with what has to be the most haunting opening title sequence I've ever seen in my life and I'm anxious to go back and watch it a second time. What an impressive picture.

The "Smiles of a Summer Night" Blu cover doesn't have Bergman's name on it anywhere.

They just tweeted that they shot a "closet" video with Guy Maddin. I'm guessing he's there for My Winnipeg, but something earlier would be nice. MW already has a pretty good release (although not on Blu).

There's a chance that could eventually happen, too, since it's the other Maddin in IFC's catalog. Also, good lord, what is he going to pull out of that closet?

Well, one of the cf.org guys emailed him, and this was the response:Guy Maddin posted:Alas, it means nothing. I was just visiting the offices and they let all visitors into the closet. I got greedy.

I was thinking about how I would react if given a chance at the closet... I would want to grab so many things, but then you can't take too much without looking like a jerk. It would be a horrific moral experience.

I'd go hunting for a Tokyo Olympiad and Carlos Saura Flamenco Trilogy since those are the only ones I really want that I don't already have. Maybe the Allan King set since neither the library nor Netflix has acquired it yet. Actually, now that I think about it, I might as well grab all the ones I haven't seen yet. If I don't like them, I can always sell them.

So the people at cf.org are doing the usual sleuthing and it looks like we're probably getting Naked on blu-ray because the page says "Restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Mike Leigh, with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition", which is pretty telling.

I've said this before and I will say it again: what is going on with the Criterion covers? Most new ones are either: bland, inappropriate, ugly to the eyes or just plain lovely. Good month though, except Life During Wartime which I didn't like at all. I can't believe that they really passed the opportunity to release Certified Copy.

As ugly as The Music Room's cover is (the font on "Satyajit Ray" is awful) and as goofy as Naked's cover is, the real loser has to be Leon for sheer dullness. Part of the fun of Criteron's covers is not only that they look good but that they say something about the film. Fish Tank, for example, is one of their best not only because it's active and exciting but because it really nails the look of the film (milky blue, handheld) and the general concept (Mia is trapped and frantic to escape).

Yeah, I've been wondering this too. Maybe they switched designers or lowered the allotted budget to cover design?? And I just watched Kuroneko on Hulu on ps3 using the free trial thing, and while the interface and design is nice, the streaming quality is pretty lovely. It looks good but it freezes and skips frames and was pretty annoying for the first half of the movie.
