Rah! posted:I dunno...during the hyphy days, Oakland and elsewhere was definitely more about it than SF itself was, but there was some Hyphy coming out of SF too, and people here were still listening to it as much as anyone else in the Bay Area was. Otherwise, the rapping/musical styles (backpacker, gangster, anything) in the Bay area are pretty similar no matter what part you're in. i don't think that is completely accurate, man, i'm pretty musically active in the scene around here lately (dunno if you know madd hatter but he opens a ton of shows for like grouch and zion and poo poo (he's actually spinning for jel and dose one next motnha nd you should go, show is gonna SLAY) and we work together a ton) and most of the cats i have been working with lately are spread across the bay but i would definitely say the attitudes are different... like you really don't have zion i's and heiros and soulsides type poo poo in SF these days, i can agree about the gangster poo poo being really similar (like roach gigz pretty much sounds like an oakland rapper to me) but i feel like the SF 'backpack' thing leans way close to the slam poetry side of things (which i honestly hate) while the oakland dudes are a lot more musical and about melody either way though, you have a point but i think i have a point too for sure, but yeah i can see both sides of it. you're probably from oakland right? i tend to hear this side of the argument a lot more across the bridge (i.e. from madd hatter, lol) and i think, in my experience at least, it's a lot more common to see SF dudes stick with peninsula dudes like daly city, s. sf, palo alto and oakland dudes fuckin with like fremont, hayward, etc but i also don't drive so my frame of reference is pretty limited, getting on the bart to get to oakland is a lot of work and usually just doesn't feel like it's worth it, so i'm definitely being a bit anecdotal

Pete Rock's made instrumental albums, Doom has a billion (the special herbs series), DJ Krush makes good stuff, DJ Shadow made the first album entirely out of samples and generally is great.

DJ Burn One is supposed to have an instrumental album coming out this year called The Ashtray that should be good, "Bobby Cox" was the first beat to come out from that and it was dope.

The Molemen have put out a bunch of instrumental albums. There's also the Hydra Beats series, DJ Spinna, 45 King, I know Sid Roams released at least one album around '08, Legendary Traxster... Add to that all the "normal" albums that get released in instrumental versions.
