Of course the real problem with that 7-series sedan is that it's pretty much full of electronic gadgets that were state of the art 5 years ago but aren't now. Assuming they still work, which can be a big assumption...

Speaking as the owner of a 12 year old Cadillac, old luxury options and gadgets still make your car better than a lot of new non luxury cars.

Not to start a lease/buy discussion, but have you looked at the cost associating with a 36 month lease on a $100,000+ car? Once you tally the monthly payments, you are are not guaranteed to be much better off. Leasing companies do not lease cars with the intention of losing money on the deal.

recently I discovered that I am broke. Hard to believe with such a thriving economy, at any rate, I am forced to sell my truck. I don't want to sell it so if you want to offer me $4500 don't bother, I'm not that broke... yet.

I recently had the truck painted, new rhino liner put in it. I was going to do a bunch more stuff to it, but when I realized I couldn't afford it, I am listing it for sale.

I'm willing to consider a trade, but please don't ask me what I'm lookng for, I will simply just tell you a 2011 Ford F350 Super Crew 4x4 diesle Harely Edition, I would love one of those, but probably couldn't afford the insurance on it either... lol...

My truck runs very nice, stong v6, good mpg. Will make it's new owners very hapy.

5 speed, V6, SR5 model with the Deluxe Package, so it has chrome mirrors and bumpers, sliding rear window, sun roof, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, tilt wheel, am/fm/cass (which i actually found some), alloy wheels, rear bumper, tires are almost new (it's a quarter in the photo),

At any rate, if you inquire with a trade PLEASE send photos don't just ask me if I'm interested. I can guarantee I'm not interested in Mercedes, Volvo, fiat, kia, saab, or Jag's.

And thank you for looking

The airline industry is what keeps Rolls Royce in business. The car division was sold off in 1973 to fund jet engine development, and since the late 90s VW has built Bentleys and RR-branded cars are by BMW.

A 44-year-old Fiat, that seems like a sound investment!

Also the only thing I saw on the "Jay Leno's Garage" website about a Fiat 124 is this:

Jay Leno posted:

A lot of my friends had Fiat 124s from the late ’60s and early ’70s. I thought they were fantastic cars for the money—but you had to know someone who knew how to fix them. You had Americans working on them with American wrenches, trying to put an American thread bolt in a metric hole—and then it leaked oil. Why is thaaat?

I'm quite aware of RR PLC's aviation business, I just thought we were talking about buying and selling cars. Perhaps I misspoke, but the point I meant to make is that it's the Saudi Princes, Hong Kong elite, and landed gentry of the Old Country that give the crew from Crewe a reason to exist.

Moreover, I was attempting to show RR/Bentley's new place in the modern consumer, automotive, and economic cultures. I sincerely doubt that FC Kerbeck of Philadelphia would have kept five Phantoms, Corniches, or Silver Shadows in stock ($1.5 million retail value) back in the Seventies and Eighties as they are doing now with a fleet of Ghosts: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/ncal.jsp?ncal_id=5887407&ct=n&car_id=294314874&dealer_id=100018562

What does this say? To me, I see the diversification of the Rolls Royce and Bentley brands as a dilution of the values the mark professed for eighty-some years - those of hand-built reliability and ruggedness, and supreme value given that we're talking cars designed to last longer than your house.

1978 was Rolls' best year for sales, moving nearly four thousand units. Last year they did just over two thirds that following years of slowly climbing triple-digit numbers. So really, what do I know. I'm just wondering why twenty years ago I didn't catch too many off-lease - let alone dealer stock - Rollers and Bentleys in the DuPont Registry, whereas today there seems to be a virtual glut. Aren't they traditionally the kind of car you'd option-out yourself? Or is it just that 300 Grand is worth less now than it used to be?

Well its pretty obvious that 300K isn't worth as much as it was back in 1978 or whatever.

IIRC Bentleys are built on the same platform as the 7 series BMW, the coachwork that commands the premiums.

Well, Keynes, let's see what that $300k is really worth when adjusted for inflation?

Using the CPI as a guide, $300k in 2010 is roughly equal to $74.1k in 1975.
In 1975, a Silver Shadow invoiced for $38,750. That's about $157k today, according to the CPI.
High Retail for a Silver Shadow these days is $29k-ish. Yeeesh.

I'm not sure what I've proved here other than some astounding inflation.

I have never met anyone, anywhere who ever viewed RR and Bentleys as "reliable" or "rugged". One of the main selling points of the Maybach was, essentially, "this car is not a tremendous pile of unreliable poo poo". It takes a LONG time to earn a reputation as bad as RR, much longer than the BMW ownership.

Also, I think you might simply be seeing an observer bias here. You see more used Rollers because you can easily look them up. In 1983 there was no ebay, craigslist or hell, even DuPont registry. If you wanted to buy a used Rolls, you would have to drive to one of only a handful of luxury used car dealerships in the country, perhaps one or two in every major city.

I assure you, coke dealers and pop singers were buying and trashing Bentleys in the 80s just like rappers are today.
That said, there has been a national trend to drive your car more miles, but keep it fewer years. It is possible that the upper end cars are subject to the same mentality.

It took about the last thirty five years, in fact. There was a time before electronics that these cars were massively overbuilt. Hard to break something that understressed.

You're thinking of the RR Ghost. Bentley uses the Phaeton platform for the Conti/Flying Spur and a dedicated platform for the Mulsanne.

All original, unmodified, but well maintained B3 coupe. Owned for five years (driven 36,000km with 304,000 current mileage), over 10k in maintenance, runs very, very well. No mechanical issues with major systems. Things like cruise, a/c and other small items not working. Power roof is fine, electiric windows fine. 5-spd trans is perfectly fine. Cloth interior. Car feels very tight, no squeaks. 20valve 5-cyl engine sounds great. Stainless exhaust. Galvanized body holding up well for a 21 year old car. Lago blue paint looks 90% from 30 feet, but pretty tired up close. 17-inch TSW rims with Yokohama S-lines and original rims with Toyo observe GO-02 snows included. Overall a solid, reliable car that is fantastic in snow with quattro and loves to run on the highway at any speed. One of less than 350 sold in Canada in 1990-91. No history before 2006, but was purchased from an Audi technician (yes, Todd's car) and he told me it was originally from Toronto. No offers less than $2,000.
