Doesn't boring a 350 30 over plus a 400 crank make 383 cubes? Boring it 60 over plus a 400 crank would make that, uhhh more than 383 CID. Unless there is actually a chev 383 and its just a 350 (+ .060) plus the crank from a 383.

Did that make sense?

You're right on the first account. There is no factory chevy 383. Most people call it a 383 however because that's easily recognized as a 350 block w/ a 400 crank. If you called it a 387 people might get a little confused.

How did you do the math on this (not being indignant, more curious). Do you have to know the stroke in order to know what to multiply .060" by? And then times 8? And that number divided by 1 inch cubed?

:psyduck:

Also if he put a 400 crank in it am I supposed to take that to mean a crank from a V8 with 400 in.3, or is 400 just like a model number or something? If there's a new[bigger] crank, wouldn't that mean a bigger stroke?

IOwnCalculus
Apr 2, 2003

The 400 crank is the longer-stroke version from the 400-cubic-inch version of the small-block Chevy. The 400 has both a longer stroke and a larger bore than the 350, but 400 blocks are relatively rare (and can have some cooling issues). Originally people actually used 400 cranks, but the swap is so common that there's now cranks meant exactly for this application.

383 actually comes from a combination of a 350 block plus a typical .030" overbore, along with that 400 crank. Ironically, you can now buy official GM 383s, but if the block has never been overbored, it's not actually a 383.

Looks like a new one is about 27k+tax retail, so it could be a decent deal? No clue.

TDI's have insane resale value, I've had cl and autotrader rss feeds and searches setup for weeks.

A nice 06 Sportwagen with low (as in 100K) miles manual TDI will fetch 14-15K easy and 09 models are fetching 22-24K pretty regularly.

The new ones (10+) have an all new motor and are apparently more failure and maintenance prone than the older motors and by most people considered an inferior car.

Check this page out for a large list of TDI craigslist ads for an idea:

Those SL600s that just need a battery? Are they on fire? Sure they are expensive to maintain, but still. These could all be flipped for a few grand each if they started.

Also that 380sl is an amazing price if it really only has 70k miles.

My neighbor just sold his. I actually saw his craigslist ad, that's how I knew he was selling it. Seemed like more of an oddball than a very interesting car to me. Once I saw the ad (he was asking $6k), I looked it up to see if there was any market for it and there really wasn't much... a number of the Capris for sale in the $5-8k range, seemed like the same price whether it was a Mustang or Capri with only a very slight bump in price for a convertible.

Is it in fact a good thing that it has original patina? I mean I guess original patina is better than like patina from a different car grafted on to the body.

Boy I love how you can tell at circa 1990 computers became powerful enough to render and predict aerodynamic characteristics of curved shapes. Like compare that to a modern Bugatti Veyron or something.

The best example in the world of this phenomena is the F-117 Stealth Fighter versus the only-slightly-younger B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.

The Veyron wasn't designed strictly for aerodynamics. They made a concept that people thought looked cool and decided they were going to stick with that no matter what. That might have something to do with why cars with less power can achieve higher top speeds.

I mentioned it in the BMW thread, but in the last year it seems everyone thinks their e30 is gold plated.

For that price, I could buy any one of the following: E36 M3, E46 330i, E34 M5, E39 540i Sport, etc. E30s have their appeal but you have to be mental to think they are rare enough to be worth 12k. Throw in another few thousand and you could have a proper E30 M3 which WILL hold its value.

Someone slotted that V8 into it after it was original brought, since the XF series (that ute's model) didn't have a V8 option. Strange to see one in the US. Parts will be an issue unless you get friendly with an Aussie
