On a related note, I may be posting something soon for my current gig (systems admin stuff) that will most likely be in Littleton, MA. I'm heading to another position within the company, and I'm not sure yet if I'll be looking for my replacement yet or not.

Good to see another IBMer on here, though!

Trying this again, am praying for the year of the job to strike

My experience:
* Bachelor of Science in Information System Technology (University of Tulsa)
* 6 month contract work for FW Murphy debugging engine code
* 2 years working American Airlines phone support via EDS Helpdesk
* 3 years doing 2nd level support for State of Texas (desktop support)
* 15 years basic desktop support for family, friends, and people who'd buy me a meal

What I'm looking for: I'd like to break into the administration side. I think I've hit as far as I can go with desktop support, as I'm allowed to poke at the issues but never able to get into the meat and actually fix them. I want to be able to trace down stupid server issues, rogue AD permission issues, and backups not running. It sounds a lot more fun then dealing with replacing another jammed printer.
What I'm NOT looking for: Temporary staffing, Entry level help desk, programming. I already do the first, and while I can debug programming, trying to do long strands of coding made me want to jump out a window in college.
Where I live: Houston, TX area
Where I'm looking: Mostly in Houston, or possibly in the DFW area as I have roots there. Anywhere else in the state/country is open depending on how good the job and how good the compensation.
When I can start: Gimme two weeks to move my crap and settle with my current employer, and I'm all yours.
Requirements: I like what I have now, which is Medical & Dental insurance 80/20 split, 401k; and a salary of 36,000. I'm open to negotiation.

Looking at this post you shouldn't be having any issues at least getting interviews for a job that meets your qualifications. You might have to get in the door as desktop support again, but you shouldn't be having issues finding a job in Houston with that kind of experience.. Unless something's off.

How's your resume look? Do you interview well? If you're not sure about either of those things get your resume looked at and have a friend do some practice interviews with you.

Is there anyone from Rackspace, San Antonio in this thread? I believe there were one or two people there. I am looking to get in as a Network Engineer. My resume is perfect for the position, not underqualified, but at the same time not over qualified.

Not sure if its allowed, but I could really use the referral. Strangely, I have had others refer me and I have never heard a thing. Not sure what the problem is.

I have a question in this realm. I have run my own computer repair and consultation business for about a year working for small businesses and residential clients. I like it, but I don't feel like I am expanding my skill set in the direction I want, hence I am looking actual employment. Should I say something to that effect in my cover letter, or just state the experience I have based on running said company and let them ask any questions about it in an interview?

Mostly I'm just not finding the openings that match my experience, though I've only been going through the chronicle's job site at the moment. My current job is ok and my bills are paid, and I could last here till retirement, but the thought of being a desk jockey is kind of depressing, and I'll be stuck at my current pay grade/job with no hope of advancement till someone either retires or dies.

I do need to work on my interviewing though, I haven't done any since I got my current job 3 years ago. Thanks for reminding me.

Looking for 2 Devs (One entry level one with around 2 yr exp) to join our Sales Engineer team. Read about it above. We call it a Sales Engineer position but really its a developer who can speak english and build demos in a fast pace environment while working with the Sales team to get an understanding of client needs.

Location: Chicago, IL

We are also hiring PS guys who are just Developers who can travel up to 90% and develop/customize/deploy our software on client sites.

Location: Chicago, IL with travel.

Yes we have a funny name.

PM or email me (myusername88@yahoo.com) if you are interested or just apply though the site (better to contact me about it). I would not mention SA in any part of the interview process.

Both of these are still open and we are going to be hiring a Graphics/Web person in the next month or 2.

Skills Needed: HTML(5), CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, Graphic Design skills (Photoshop)
Good Skillz: Linux, ESXi (Though I won't let you touch my ESXi server)

Really you need to be able to see something on a site or a concept and be like Yup I can build that. HTML/CSS/JS really need to be like speaking English. Please have some websites you can show me and some graphics work you have done.

I would expect the interview to test your creative side. ie. Look at this site. How would you make it better/Slicker/Cooler/Standout more/More Web 2.0!!!.

More to come with an edit.

God I hope year of the job is still in effect.

My experience: Non-professionally, was the go-to guy for computer issues and advice (e.g. system build recommendations) for close to 20 years. Professionally, essentially the same thing but for business-related issues and advice (e.g. network/server builds), 2.5 years full-time, 10 years part-time. Professional experience includes heavy use of Kaseya and Hyper-V based virtualization (a little less VMware).
What I'm looking for: Support/planning role for IT infrastructure, including network, virtual machines, system builds etc.
What I'm NOT looking for: Anything where I deal too directly with customers (I can do it, but you'll get a lot more out of me behind-the-scenes), anything with a 24/7 on-call period or frequent late nights (late nights occasionally are totally fine w. overtime compensation, so long as it's not a regular thing and more of an exceptional circumstance)
Where I live: Montreal, Quebec
Where I'm looking: Greater Montreal area, will consider Ottawa if the offer is good.
When I can start: As soon as you can reach me.
Requirements: Good medical/dental would be a giant plus, but not strictly a requirement.
Can be reached via: This thread, PM, univbee at gmail dot com.

I posted awhile ago but figured it couldn't hurt to try again:

My experience: 4.5 years of IT consulting, driving around fixing everything from gunked up ball-mice, crashed Exchange databases, or leaky pipes (yeap). Did a lot of project work (network overhauls, server migrations/upgrades, cabling runs, patch panel work, etc) and a lot of break-fix stuff.
What I'm looking for: A company where I can fit into a small IT team and have fun.
What I'm NOT looking for: Something where I'm the only technical person in the building
Where I live: Providence, RI
Where I'm looking: Preferably Providence. I'm not opposed to a commute but I've been driving 60 miles round trip every day for over 4 years and the gas is killing me.
When I can start: Just give me two weeks.
Requirements: $60k+ and benefits

My company just had a vacancy and I can honestly say that despite a few shortcomings (no casual Fridays, health plan is meh at best but dental is done by reimbursement and costs way less than a regular dental plan, only the big six federal holidays off) it's a really amazing bunch of people to work with. We're a managed service provider in Manhattan, conveniently located almost equidistant between Port Authority and Penn Station.

The guys and girls I work with are very good technical-minded people, we're all very laid-back and high-energy, and we're not evil corporate or anything like that. I'm not sure if the job is going to be more phone and remote support or more onsite support, or if they'll blend it like the previous incumbent had (90% of us are blended between onsites and phone/remote, I and one other person are phone/remote-only) but it's a good place to be. We do have Transitcheck for up to the current $230 government pre-tax maximum, decent vacation/sick/personal day allotment, and there's no real limit to what you can bring to the table or pick up on the job.

Bonuses paid for passed cert exams, reimbursements for training materials and exam fees, etc.

We're 97% PC and 3% Mac. Lots of Win 7 knowledge to go with XP. We run Exchange save for one or two clients who have Lotus Notes, but we're not too heavily involved with that. Lots of knowledge on networking, printers, MS Office 2003, 2007, and 2010 will be very good to have. We use Sonicwall and Cisco VPN clients.

Please send resumes or questions to mjpbyron at gmail dot com. There's lots of good times to be had at this office - we really do work hard but also play hard. I know there's a posting out there somewhere and will put a link here once I track it down.

I'm all about meeting girls. I'm all about meeting guys.
Who are we?
Quickoffice (http://www.quickoffice.com)

Where are we?
Dallas, TX (technically Plano, off Bush and Preston)

What are we looking for?
Web developer who knows the full LAMP stack pretty thoroughly. I'm leaving the company and we need someone to fill my shoes. You should know PHP pretty thoroughly, along with API development and web scalability. We're in the process of moving to Amazon EC2, so familiarity with that would certainly help. Having a good understanding of full end-to-end development is also essential. HTML, CSS, JavaScript (jQuery and jQuery Tools are our libraries of choice). Knowing mobile website development would really, really help you (media queries, working specifically with webkit, for example). We're also not married to any specific technology. Front end website is PHP, backend transaction server is Java, we have some Rails servers up and running for user management. Right now we're on MySQL, but Postgres or Mongo are certainly up for discussion.

You'll be working on the main https://www.quickoffice.com website which is one of our main ecommerce channels. You will not be working in the Engineering department but rather the marketing department. Thus, knowledge of email marketing, website analytics, A/B testing, and ways to drive traffic and revenue will really help.

You'll have to wear many hats. We have huge databases, so sometimes you'll be asked to run an ad-hoc query to get some numbers for the CEO because he has a board meeting in 5 minutes. We're essentially our own small company within the larger organization, so having an entrepreneurial background/mindset wouldn't hurt either.

How do I apply?
Send me a PM and I'll give you my work email address.

Anything else?
Quickoffice is a really great place to work. I'm not leaving for any reason other than I found another awesome job that's much closer to my house. Management is great, very flexible with family stuff, working from home, time off, etc.

Here's two examples of cool things they've done for us: one quarter we really hit it hard so our boss got everyone in the team their own personal iPad (as in, it's yours, keep it). This was on top of our quarterly bonus. Another quarter we hit 150% so our boss took everyone on the team (and their spouses/f-buddies) to 3 Forks (very nice steakhouse in Dallas).

The marketing manager is also very good about listening to your ideas and letting you implement them if you can show they have a positive impact on revenue.

Quickoffice builds mobile productivity applications for iOS, Android, Symbian and webOS. We're obviously in a very hot market, and the company is continually growing. There's some very cool development going on here.

Soiled Meat
I had posted a while back that the company I work for in Illinois is looking for a new developer to join the team. At that time, we ended up not hiring anyone, and put the position on hold, but now we need to replace someone on the team.

tl;dr: Junior Programmer position open in Carthage, Illinois!

Who are we?
Carthage Veterinary Service, Ltd. We are a management/health consulting group for large hog production systems. Although we mainly consult in the US and Europe, we have many clients/partners all over, including Canada, China, Japan, and South America.

Where are we?
Carthage, Illinois

Where the hell is that?
West central Illinois, near the tip of the boob where IL, IA, and MO all come together, about 2.5-3 hours north of St. Louis. Yes, it is a small town in a rural area; hopefully you won't treat that as too much of a turn-off, it just is what it is.

What are we looking for?
We're searching for someone who can jump into a DotNet Framework (C#, ASP.Net, MVC) development role with a reasonable comfort level with the Framework, object-oriented concepts, and basic relational database theory. This is a "junior" position, but you will be expected to demonstrate some competence in modeling and implementing "smallish" data-driven web sites, and similar projects. There are three of us that work as a team to help one another out, but in large part you will need to be comfortable with taking a project and running with it, and with knowing when and what kinds of questions to ask when you need assistance.

Being a small company, we don't have dedicated PMs or requirements gatherers, so you will be expected to become comfortable with:
- Working with other departments, and external clients, to develop requirements for new projects
- Completing scoping templates, including task work estimates

Like a lot of similar jobs, there will be a lot of maintenance of existing software projects, but the person we pick for this position will be someone who is able to pick up and run with their own small projects when the opportunity arises.

How do I apply?
PM me here, or shoot me an email: linq.me at gmail

Anything else I should know?
Even though we're located in a small town, we don't operate like a small-town company, and have been growing rapidly in the 7+ years I've worked here. Up until 18 months ago, we were working out of a converted animal hospital. The company purchased a small college campus, we now occupy a 4-story dorm building that has been gutted and remodeled into offices. Though not as big as Microsoft, we now have our own campus, complete with a quad where you can escape for a walk to get away from the desk for a bit.

Despite of, or maybe because of, our size, we're able to keep pretty current on software. Everyone in IT has reasonably new machines, Windows 7, Visual Studio 2010; back office is Windows Server 2008 (some on R2), SQL Server 2008. I only point this out because "small, rural company" sometimes translates into junky/outdated hardware/software.

Hopefully this is a good place to ask this:

I'm currently a technician for a fairly large integration company, meaning I both build computers and test them to make sure they work. I'm not sure what I want to be in the future, though I'd like to be something in IT. Is my current job something that has potential for me to get better jobs, or am I dead-ending myself here? I'm thinking that the next logical path could be a technician at an NOC/datacenter, but beyond that, I'm not sure what else I could do, and what experience/skillsets I'd need.

(Also, I guess this is a good place for me to ask if anyone here knows any NOCs that are hiring technicians in the Bay Area, preferably San Jose. I wouldn't mind help desk, either, but it depends on the pay/proximity to San Jose - ideally I'd like the job to be in SJ itself.)

NOC/Colocation is a common vertical move, where you can become more experienced with network or systems administration with strengths applied from your background.

If you've got a CE/EE degree, you might consider moving your way up into Integration Testing, or interning at a hardware development firm. Traditionally in the Bay Area this means Hitachi/IBM/Intel, but those positions are essentially filled with Stanford/Cal interns.

If you don't have a degree in anything, then chances are you aren't going to go much further building/repairing computers, unless you open up your own consulting gig for tech support/disaster recovery/deployment. That field is insanely saturated in the Bay Area, but if you already have prospective clients it's possible to make it work.

Do you have a degree? Familiar with a nix variant? How's your people skills? I'm probably hiring a few more Support Engineers out in Burlingame in the very near future, and while it's very System/Network admin oriented as long as you're competent we can take the time to teach you how to be brilliant with bash.

Shoot me a resume at caylen at gmail dot com and I'll see if you could be a good fit.

Question to all you hiring managers:

What are you looking for when you want a candidate to have a Bachelors degree?

I have almost 5 years in the I.T. field and am starting to look at actual sysadmin/network admin positions and quite a few of them specifically want a candidate with a Bachelors or similar degree.

I currently have two A.A. degrees in fields related to IT management, and while I will freely admit that I can always learn new things, I can never really get a clear answer as to what skills I am lacking with an A.A. that a B.A. would get me (other than a nice piece of paper that says "Bachelors" on it).

Can anyone clear that up for me?

Thanks.

I'm starting to notice a lack of a BS holding me back. I've also got 5 years in as a Windows Admin and applied a few months ago for jobs with very large corporations that I was completely qualified for except for the lack of a 4 year degree. I never heard anything back from them. This is the first time in my life my resume has failed to at least get a screening phone call from someone, much less a 1st round interview.

I would say this.. A lack of a 4 year degree can hurt you by not getting you past the HR or recruiter filter and getting your resume seen by someone who actually knows what they're looking at. If you have an in at the company who can get your resume seen by a hiring manager, thats one way around it, but really lack of a 4 year degree can hurt. I suggest doing whatever it takes to get one.

Can be reached via: This thread or PM for now

If you don't mind a commute to around Marlborough, MA, hit me up on PM.
