The best way to do this too is to go on whosampled, look up your favorite house artists and listen to the songs they sampled.

Completely agreed. Of course, I have been discovering/remembering more often that what most people consider "disco" is just the Bee Gees and Donna Summer. There is so much more to disco that is waiting to be discovered (thanks Daft Punk for ruining/making cool that pun for everyone).

hahaha this sounds like the most generic forgettable poo poo, i don't think it even qualifies as electro. Their other single wasn't much better than this either. Shame too, I saw them live in 2008 at collie after they'd released their (very very good) last album and it was the best time I've had at a big festival. Dudes put on a good show

Not a fan of the first half of the album but I do like the back half, especially Encore and Just Gazin. Stratosphere is nice too.

At the same time though I think a lot of promoters and djs are inept and have a lovely taste in music so that can have something to do with it! Oh well, if only I had a crew, about 5k down and a shitload of equipment.

Also I didn't know Jokers of the Scene were from Ottawa, thats pretty cool. I didn't know Ottawa had a good music scene. Id love to check out Montreal's underground scene but I'm not so into minimal...

i regularly go to illegal raves in montreal but it's mostly psytrance. I don't know what you mean by ''underground'' but there's also a shitload of dubstep/electro events that are held in a bunch of different places that are semi-known. if you plan to go to montreal and want to know what's going on you can always shoot me an email at the_moneymaker at hotmail dot com with a date and i'll help you

Yeah I hear Montreal's underground scene is pretty sweet. It's really hard to get good real estate in Toronto and illegal parties on larger scales get shut down fast. I have some friends who visit Montreal's minimal techno scene regularly but next time I go I'll send you a message :)

I'm looking for some new ways to find new music aside from my blogs and listening to Annie Mac weekly. I'm more into disco and electro house but I listen to pretty much everything. Is there a good source for new mixes or mixtapes of those genres? Chemicaljump posts stuff from well known producers every once in a while but I'd be more interested in a weekly or daily mix post style site. Thanks in advance.

Labels, labels, labels

Seriously, investigate the labels that house your favorite artists and use that as a jumping off point to discover more artists/compilations/labels. It's a self-perpetuating process.

Saw Jaguar Skills live last night.

I'm not entirely sure whether he was drunk off his arse or was having an off-day but he wasn't as on-point as I was expecting having heard him be talked up by everyone. It didn't help that I spent the lead-up to his show in another part of the club enjoying tracks that were perfectly mixed/dropped by a bunch of unknowns. Wandering in to hear Skills leaving the bass out of Congorock's 'Babylon' at the drop  missing drops entirely :nyd: and leaving a deck live over the PA whilst he fast forwarded to a drop :downsbravo: meant I left pretty disappointed.

...this is a dude who has a slot on BBC radio.

It seems like a lot of his set was pre-setup anyway so why not just do the whole thing and avoid errors completely?

That aside, his schtick works and the crowd loved the whole "I say 'Jaguar', you say 'Skills' " as well as the whole mashup thing and his track selection was pretty good but I heard most of it from the other DJs playing before him.

Meh/10

I saw him in my wonderful home town. I think I've been spoiled by both DJs and music in that I mix a bit myself so I know what to expect and I know a fair amount of tracks and what they do. As such I was expecting big tings but he didn't deliver (for me, anyway). I enjoyed the 'Catchphrase' square select sound effect thrown randomly into one of his tracks immensely, it was pretty funny.

He was good but I've seen better, I'm thinking maybe he has too many effects and samples set up to go and got a little bit muddled up. The CDJ seek over the PA was unforgivable though, it was a good 15-20 seconds too.
