There are clearly laws being broken, both national and European, the Irish government ignoring its people, and a community which ends up being forced against each other. Available on 4oD, and it has an IMDB entry. This is well woth watching. It's a completely shocking look at a community and way of life being torn apart by a corporation.

Just found Playing Columbine on Netflix streaming. The subject feels (perhaps unfairly) a bit dated, and I never played the game very far, but it certainly made a splash at the time. I'm five minutes into it. It's about this guy who made a game that people really didn't like, and there's this creep who tracked down who he was IRL and put his info online for others to harass him. It's a bit low-budget, but not bad so far. Is it right to have games that upset people? Is it right to kill people in video games at all? Are some subjects so sacred that they are exempt from certain forms of interpretation? Some things always bug me about the video games I play with my friends. I always feel a bit iffy playing military-based games. Is it right to glamorize or gameify the experiences of real-life soldiers, terrorists, and civilians, so that they become entertainment, toned down so we don't feel any of their pain? Does this make us less sympathetic with people on the other side of the planet, or the warriors we send out there to kill and die for us? (That second bit may or may not be covered in the docu, just something that I kind of force myself to consider now and then.) I also saw Special When Lit on Hulu, it's a pretty good documentary about pinball machines, and it stars some pretty interesting [s]autistic[\s] characters. doctorfrog fucked around with this message at 23:36 on Jun 17, 2011 |

ravenkult posted:Any recommendations for documentaries about art or street art? Not too dry though. You might enjoy Beautiful Losers. "Beautiful Losers celebrates the creative spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories...speaking to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth." Last I checked, it was on Netflix instant. You can see the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyRAHKTy6hI It's pretty interesting and similar to Exit Through the Gift Shop. I actually saw it at a street art exhibit in San Diego that was displaying stuff from a lot of the people featured in Gift Shop (Banksy, Space Invader, Shepard Fairey, etc.)

I just watched 8: The Mormon Proposition on Netflix. It talks about the church's role (particularly in funneling money) in getting Prop 8 passed in California, and also covers the church's bigotry and hypocrisy in general on the issue of marriage. There's a good amount of interviews with activists, former Mormons, lobbyists, and politicians, as well as excerpts from internal memos of the church on its political strategy, which involved astroturfing, a media blitz, and coaching supporters how to ease into the subject of banning same-sex marriage in casual conversations. I'll just tell you right now it's an infuriating and depressing documentary. Echo Chamber fucked around with this message at 04:43 on Jun 22, 2011 |

UK readers of this thread may like to know that BBC4 is under threat right now (as is BBC3, but gently caress that) due to the Coalition government's budget cuts and the general "Anti-BBC" feeling that seems to be around at the moment. Don't let them get away with this. Contact the BBC, contact OFCOM, contact your MP if you have to, and let them know that you want the BBC to continue making quality programmes of the type a public service broadcaster should be making. Don't let them dumb it down.

This may be tricky to find a copy of at the moment since it just came out at Toronto International Film Festival a few months back. However, Bury The Hatchet http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0875702/ Follows several of the New Orleans "Indian Chiefs". These are the guys who wear those crazy huge sparkly head-dresses and costumes on Mardi Gras and a few other holidays. They act as community leaders, party planners and basically function as one of the glues holding the city's culture together. The film starts following them right before Hurricane Katrina so without spoiling anything I'll say that they show their struggle to keep the tradition going afterwards. It also analyzes the devastating effect that a highway overpass built in the Treme neighborhood had on the community. The tradition of the Indian Chiefs themselves hearkens back to a time when black slaves who had escaped from the French fled into the swampy wilderness and were then sheltered by Native American tribes. It really is a great film, making great use of personal interviews and also hard-to-find archive footage of Mardi Gras past and present. Recommended to anyone with an interest in New Orleans and it's culture. Edgar Quintero fucked around with this message at 02:31 on Jul 6, 2011 |

Strangewaysquote:The shocking series gains access into Strangeways, a maximum security prison in Manchester with a history as rough as the inmates it houses. Three fascinating episodes unearth the idiosyncrasies and complex relationships between the most violent and dangerous men in the prison and the staff who work with them. Unique twists, like following a couple as they prepare for a wedding behind bars, and graphic footage of arguments and emotional breakdowns make for unmissable viewing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LUMv-sBxvk There are three episodes in this documentary and I have to say that I found it very well balanced in the approaches it made towards both prisoner and staff worker alike. It has its moments of laughter and its moments of "-ing hell..." and everything inbetween. Rather than simply having the prisoners as an ominous but ultimately faceless front for the basic prisoner psycho stereotype, it goes into some detail on various inmates that they follow around and/or interview, ranging from high-profile murderers to the homeless, and presents them as the people they are as they go through the stages of their incarceration. However, it doesn't get all lovey-dovey with the inmates. There's a definite balanced view from both sides of the fence and each of them are equally fascinating, prisoner and prison staff.
