Perhaps, but that engine bay looks a hell of a lot like my 74 Hornet I had. Lucky for A MIRACLE and I, the 258 (also in my Hornet) was in a lot of AMC's cars and in almost all of their Jeeps. Since I never replaced any body parts or trim pieces it was quite easy to maintain the car for daily driving for 3 years. A glance at AutoZone.com shows lots of parts available. Granted it isn't a GM or Honda or anything, but I was never pained trying to find parts. I also miss it terribly.

How much does he want for it? If I didn't want a 60s/70s Caddy so bad a Lincoln would absolutely be my next choice. However, I'd wonder about the rust situation, being in MI and all. And unless they had some way to prove it, I'd never believe that a 40+ year old car with a 5 digit speedo really has anything less than 100,000k plus whatever it says. But if it runs good and the body is solid and you're willing to work on any issues that come up, who cares? This is pretty much exactly what I'm trying to find, and even with little to no mechanical aptitude I figure even I can learn to wrench on a car that old.

I've never actually stood up in a car before while driving it, but I did in that one trying to get enough pressure on the accelerator just to get it to move.

Could that Spirit really get 35 mpg? I mean...I might believe you could squeeze 30 out of it, being a 6 of that era, that's about as much credulity I can manage.

The 6's back in the day were quite the fuel efficient. My father had a F-150 with a 300 strait 6 and routinely pulled 17 highway. Though it was rather a scary feeling trying to get on the interstate, but managed every time.

You have to keep in mind how light cars were and that the gas crisis in the 70s forced all the automakers to focus on fuel efficiency. The Spirit isn't on this list I found, but if a six cylinder Chevy Celebrity got 42 mpg highway and a four cylinder Chevette got 55 mpg, 35 for the AMC is not hard to believe.

I wouldn't consider a 2900 lb car that light. Best figure I can find was 23-27 mpg highway for the 5-speed I6. Dunno if that's new or old EPA test figures.

Throatwarbler posted:Wow, what a rip. TBH I'm not sure I quite understand how much better the 1M is supposed to be when compared to the 135i. Both have a twin-turbo 3.0L I6, both have exceptional brakes and superb steering... the 1M has something like 35 bhp extra and about the same in ft-lb of torque, but that's nothing that engine tuning wouldn't give the 135i. Of course the less expensive car won't have those flared wheel arches or quad exhaust pipes, or M badges over everything. I'm not saying there's no difference, and given the MSRP differential the 1M is a good buy, but from what I've read it's definitely not worth paying $40k over invoice.

Are we talking about beanie babies or cars? gently caress that. For some reason that I can't quite put into words, I'm viscerally opposed to paying extra for anything about a car that doesn't translate into raw, concrete functionality. Could you not upgrade a different class BMW to those specs and even body work and finish for less than $40,000 (USD)? The day I spend extra for nothing more than a brand name or badge is the day the English build a car with a 10 year "boot-to-bonnet" warranty.

I had the impression that the 1M was to appease the legions of enthusiasts wanting another e30 M3, which can never really happen again. The M division seems to be completely done with N/A engines, depending on what they put in the next M3.

Collectability is all it has going for it, considering you can get a brand-new M3 at that price, which is a better machine by almost every standard. Unless you're an I6 purist, of course, in which case you can buy a CPOed E9x M3 *and* an old E46 M3 with low mileage for that price. Awful.

I was watching some slightly older Top Gears (season 15 or 16), and wasn't the M3 the one that had a "competition" package? I wonder if its possible to get that matte finish after-market. Although I'm not sure weather it'd be at all desirable. Looks cool, not worth $40,000 USD at any rate.
