You can easily get around their toll and lose only a few minutes of time (or save, depending on how backed up the toll traffic is). When going northbound, take exit 109/MD-279 E, keep going 2 or so miles and make a right onto DE-896 and a right again to stay on 896 until you meet up with I-95. Obviously, it's the reverse when you're coming south from Philly. Ford dodged the bullet by like 6 months by leveraging everything they had, with Chrysler and GM set to revamp a bit later. That was a smart move on Fords part, but it wasn't because they could see the economic collapse coming, it was because they were actually the worse off of the big 3. In the early to mid 00's, GM was still numero uno with the SUV sales, and Chrysler was fresh off the successful 90's with things like the 300C and Charger on the slate. Mercedes then raped Chrysler of money, Katrina destroyed SUV sales, and all three were in trouble. Auto design takes time, and what you see rolling out of GM and Chrysler now was in the pipeline years ago, for the most part. Ford really did get lucky. True, it was just worse on the Lightnings. The other thing that definitely wasn't limited to them is the piston slap. My 4.6l '97 pickup has had it (mostly when cold) for a good 150,000 of its 220,000 miles. You can find problems like this with any car company. But Ford consistently does this crap on "special" models that people are obviously paying a premium for, and then doesn't stand behind them.

So basically, those cars weren't really failures, they were just rebadged for better brand recognition when Ford consolidated models to stop competing with itself. Edit: The Taurus is still sold as the Five Hundred outside of the U.S. and Canada.

The Five Hundred started in 2005, the old bubble style Taurus was still available as a fleet model all they way up to 2007. When Mullaly came in in 2008 and decided to switch the names back, the Five Hundred was getting a substantial revamp at the same time anyway, and the old Taurus finally died. Compared to the Five Hundred, the (new)Taurus has a completely new engine and transmission (the old 200hp 3l V6 and CVT were both poo poo compared to the new 3.5l and 6 speed) and can correctly be called a new, better car.

^ I think its more likely Ford saw the writing on the wall and started to turn things around before poo poo hit the fan in the form of the financial crisis. The other two either pretended nothing was wrong or didn't see it coming until it was too late to do anything. Luck probably did factor in but only as far as the timing of securing private loans.

Yeah, ford sold off AM, jag, land rover, and a lot of mazda shares before the poo poo hit the fan as well. Also they always had decent economical cars to drop into the US market whenever they needed to, since they had ford in europe making decent cars. The story goes that the senator made a bunch of noise and as a result Amtrak retrofitted/did away with their "heritage" cars. There's also speculation later in the thread that western trains still discharge sewage onto the tracks because they run too long between stops to pump the holding tanks and keep the toilets running.

Don't know why a bolt, a threaded hole in the cam, and a pinned cam gear like any other car wouldn't have worked.

^ But the short term savings of $5 per car (x 21,000 odd cars, and then applied further across the entire lineup) is better for upper management, because by the time the problems materialize they will have already cashed out their stock options and will be off lining their pockets further by running some other company into the ground. Its the next guy's problem when some massive reliability issue destroys the company's image. See also; putting people with MBAs who have no knowledge about cars at all in charge of a major automaker. You know whats funny is I have had 3 ford cars with AXOD transmissions in them, and with regular transmission fluid changes, they can last forever. People in general it seems like never really bother replacing anything but the oil and ignore the transmission altogether. Hell, the last Taurus I had was at 250k miles and shifting just fine when I sold it. It was a 1996 and my dad bought it new. Anecdotal evidence ahoy!

You could almost certainly build a Bridge-Toilet-Evacuate-Holdoff system that'd work pretty well. Have a "this is a loving bridge" broadcaster ahead of each problem bridge, and a sensor in each loco that could send a "CLOSE TOILET DUMP VALVE" signal to each car with a crapper. The problem would be, would it be cheaper than just straight-up building sewage tanks into human-carrying cars?
