Thrift store records will always be the domain of Mitch Miller. I usually see at least 5 - 10 records by him at any thrift store.

His sing-a-long albums must have been ubiquitous in the 60s. They're EVERYWHERE.

The stuff that bothers me at the thrift stores is that there are so many copies of Theme From Dr Zhivago but none of the stuff you KNOW sold a million copies. Where are my 45s for tennessee ernie ford's Sixteen Tons, harry belafonte's Hold em Joe and andrews sisters' Rum and Coca-Cola?

Mescal an original Rum & Coke is a 78, and many thrifties don't carry 78s. But you are right, I think people attach value to them because they were popular, or even for nostalgia. Also the staff cherry pick the good stuff at the distribution centres, and collectors hit the stores on the first day of new stock.

I was visiting my grandfather today and went to the neighbours to fix their DVR. They had a box of records on the counter and said they were giving the whole box to a charity store. I said i'd take the whole box off their hands (I could offload the stuff I didn't want to a friend who collects crappy crap). Well they ummed and arred and took some out. As expected it's mostly tatty crap, but theres a couple of local business advertisement flexis which are ok I guess.

I went to a flea market yesterday in McComb, Mississippi (they took Bo Diddley's blues trail marker down for repairs!) and found what I thought were some really crazy country 45s. Looked 'em up... nope, they appear to be pretty run-of-the-mill despite the fact that I've never seen them

I answered an ad for an estate sale the other day. I show up there and it's a grim-rear end building full of old people; this man's mother died and he was getting rid of her stuff. So far, so good. She had tons of records in great shape, but they were poo poo like Mitch Miller, Kitty Wells, Vic Damone, etc. There were a couple of Sam Cooke and Sinatra records I wanted, and the guy told me he wouldn't let them go unless I bought everything for $500.

He claimed it was easily worth 2000 bucks but he wanted to get it out of there ASAP. It was literally 90% thrift store crap.

Who knows.

Yeah, me too, I love checking out thrift shops while on vacation. You really get a feel for the character of the area. In California I found a lot of old Environments records- still trying to find the whole collection- and in far northern Finland they had boxes of cheesy 80s euro disco.

A few months back, a Goodwill in midtown had a whole bunch of late-70s to late-80s R&B /early new jack swing 12" singles in the bin that no one went through. I feel as if the original owner worked at a roller rink or something and held on to their collection after that kind of recreation went tango uniform (really, these were the kind of songs you'd imagine swaying to on a pair of roller skates back in the day) and they gave it all to Goodwill. I happen to dig that kind of music, but I didn't have much money at the time and wish I could have bought everything, but I did walk away with some Timex Social Club and Club Nouveau records (same group, different names, great stuff).

Speaking of dwindling record areas at thrift stores, it's happening here, too. No sooner after I bought a plethora of awesome dadrock albums at one thrift store I frequented, the store cut back its record display by 75% and filled the former space of records with CDs and books on tape. Since this store happens to be in a retirement community, you can be rest assured that Mitch Miller and beautiful music string compilations by some conductor no one's heard of are all that's left :(

Also, you can't not flip through a thrift store collection and not find at least 17 copies of this goddamn thing at every single thrift store ever.

You want your million selling records? Here's your million selling record right here. 7.5 million sold. That means I'll keep finding this thing until I die.

Ahaha, this was given to me as a gag gift once. I forgot it in my car and it melted to hell though.

Mitch Miller's sing alongs are pretty prevalent around here, as well as Chirstmas albums, songs by Broadway performers, compilations from the 60's of "Song's the Whole World Loves" etc., and of course Streisand/Bee Gees/BARRY MANILOW/Chuck Mangione/Hank Williams/Lionel Richie.

If it's belt-driven, it never hurts to get a new belt. It should cost around 10 $ regardless of what kind of system it is. If it costs a lot more, you're looking in the wrong place.

Look up your make and model at Vinyl Engine and register for free to get the service manual. I have a Sansui DD linear-tracking table that did the same thing when I first bought it (played just slightly too slow). After I registered, I got the manual and found out that there are two small holes on the bottom of the player for 33 and 45 RPM that allows you to manually adjust the pitch/speed. It works like a drat champ now, and all my records sound boss at the correct speed.

If it's not direct drive, replace the belt for cheap like Jerry said.

Wood base, late 70's Pioneer PL line (PL-530, PL-550, PL-570)

I've owned quite a few of the vintage Technics direct drive tables from the 70s that everyone likes for used tables, a Technics SL-1210MKII, and currently own a Pioneer PL-550 from 1976. My current table is hands down my favorite. It's just as solid and sounds just as nice as my 1200 did but I like the way it looks and like the feel of the aircraft style switches and levers far more than I liked the look and feel of my 1200.

Here's a nice one on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Pioneer-Quartz-PL-550-Vintage-Turntable-/170674001758?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item27bcf6975e

Here's an auction for its big brother, the automatic PL-570:

And some record player porn of the tonearm on my table:

Here's a PL-550 some guy fully restored and put a huge record clamp on:

EDIT: If you buy a turntable on eBay make sure the person packs it very carefully, here's a good guide on what to ask for:

Nar, the ones that are just the wood surround for a plastic Pioneer, like the entry level PL-10. Not as poo poo as a new Crosley, but not as good as the full woodies (like your 550) which are awesome.

Oops, yeah good call. Sorry to contribute to the derail.

Some recent pickups mixed with some stuff that's been sitting on my shelf that I've just started to put into rotation:

Emiliana Torrini - Love in the Time of Science: Bought this a while back, just spun it recently for the first time, it sounds amazing. It's the first Direct Metal Master album I've owned, I'll be on the lookout for more now.

Tom Petty - Wildflowers: Picked this up for $15.00 and just noticed it's apparently pretty rare and seems to be fetching decent money on eBay and Discogs. I'll probably keep it, pretty big fan of this album.

Bonobo - Animal Magic: Finally found this cheap on Discogs recently, I just need Dial M for Monkey now and I'll have them all.

Flunk - For Sleepyheads Only: One of the greatest downtempo bands ever IMO. I wish the rest of their albums were available on vinyl, aside from a few 12" singles the only other vinyl release is a remix double LP that I don't like.

Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55: Got this as a gift recently, awesome album. I love her vocals and the music was composed/performed by Air.

Thievery Corporation - Culture of Fear: Managed to snag this limited edition copy on the labels website for $30.00 before they sold out (245/300). The title track is unfortunately the ubiquitous out of place hip hop song that I've grown so fond of hating on so many downtempo albums. Plenty of great tracks with LouLou on vocals though and one with Shana Halligan from Bitter:Sweet :coal:

This is more suited for the turntable thread but I just picked up a Numark 1520 for 2$ because the output board was cracked between the L/R jacks and plugging it in did nothing, at least says the guy. Took the board out, gorilla glue'd it and clamped it, took it apart and everything looked fine. Fuse fine, solder fine, caps fine, etc. Put it back together and it works great, clocks perfectly.

I'm a big weiner when it comes to spending any money on record stuff other than buying massive amounts of records, so should I keep this over my awful Toshiba SRA100? It just fits so much better with my Marantz 2230 :(
