I finally got around to buying Kingdom's newest single (Take Me) it's pretty alright. Interesting that Kingdom would release it with the acapella, but that seems like something that he would do, hoping he would get a lot of cool R&B type edits/remixes because of it.

Nice, didn't know this dropped. I dunno what it is with this guy but I always like the flips more, really enjoying If You Buck, same with YOU from the Mind Reader single.

On a grime tip, this Preditah remix of Marger's new single is a cool thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBVwGfpCogE

Preditah's remix of I Am is also really good and I haven't heard it get much airplay.

Forever disappointed that the Groove Chronicles album that should have been on R&S never panned out. For one it might've kept R&S actually relevant for the past decade.

Of course out of that we did get a whole heap of Ghost/El-B stuff (Ghost/El-Breaks/Scorpion/Bison, not to mention Shelflife was pretty much all Ghost), but you know what? Noodles really doesn't get enough love for his great tunes if you ask me.

Yep, full marks. Exemen is a Wookie alias. And Sia is Sia Furler, best known for doing the vocals on a lot of Zero 7 songs, just in case anyone is interested/doesn't know. The Wookie/Exemen remix was really big actually, probably a lot bigger than the actual original.

Wookie was another one of those guys who's remix work probably well out-numbers the what he actually released. I've always loved his Kinda Funky remix.

I got people asking me about "Deathstep" now. That didn't sound good, so I did a bit of digging. Youtube seems to indicate it's taking brostep's telltale nu-metal origins and making them explicit. Looks like another neologism for talentless producers to hop on, check out this complete lack of production sense - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2E3gpLRO9Q

In other news, I'm really enjoying the new Graphics single, who I had never heard before but apparently runs in the same sort of circles as Hackman and the Blunted Robots people. It's also fairly IDM-ish, which will turn off some people but rarely bothers me.

Except the Vex'd stuff was actually a million miles away in terms of song writing ability, and a million miles away producion-wise as. The other stuff just sounds like it's made by someone who thinks a BC Rich guitar is still the height of cool. Parents don't let your kids near a sequencer if they still wear skinny jeans and their wardrobe consists of nothing but black clothes with skulls on them and band t-shirts(in black).

Actually, truth be told, I can take or leave the later Vex'd stuff. Some of it's a bit shakey. It's probably a good thing they never stuck around only to make a slow descent into mediocrity. Though Degenerate still ranks as one of the top all-time Dubstep albums as far as I'm concerned, just an absolute blast of pure energy. And those first few singles they had on Subtext really put them on the radar as far as I was concerned. So, so good.

More Ayia Napa than Ibiza. Not that it makes it any better really haha! But that's where all the Funky guys go. I think Crazy Cousinz were over there this summer as well. So if it was played over there chances are it could be big(-ish). That's what happened with T2 and Heartbroken if I remember right(which I may not be, as it's happened to many songs). It came out and no-one really knew about it, then after a summer in Napa, getting swirled around peoples heads it blew up.

Oh such harsh words there. Broken Beat is really just Roy Ayers in the 21st Century. I mean he is in the 21st century since he's not dead, but dammit you know what I mean! So if you like 70s funk and soul you might want to keep digging at Broken Beat.

Anyway definitely check out the Maddslinky album that songs off of. Make Your Peace was recently re-issued last year on Tru Thoughts when Maddslinky/Zed Bias released his newest album on that. But the new cover does kind of suck though compared to the old. It's a great album though.

And try Zed Bias other incarnation of Phuturistix. Their first album was on Hospital back when they released cool stuff. Kind of similar to the Maddslinky stuff, but overall maybe a bit more jazzier.

You might like some of the tracks off Neon Phusion's first album The Future Ain't The Same As It Used To Be. Neon Phusion is basically a Bugz sideproject so if you like them you might like that. Bare in mind that album is right from the start of the Broken Beat era, from 99. It's probably not quite as ruff as you want, but there is a good track or two on there that I think might meet what you want, they're just not on Youtube sadly.

You know I've been liking this, which makes a nice change because Rustie has really disappointed me with most of his work past his first few EPs on Stuff. It's not even signing to Warp that's done it, his Wireblock releases were pretty hit or miss for me too. Though the Spliff Dub remix and his Jagz The Smack EP are loving amazing.

And on the topic of Glaswegian producers, I'll need to reveal the truth here that I've also never been a fan of HudMo. I saw him DJ a lot, and he always brought in the crowd while he was supporting the big boys(probably one of the reasons he got signed to Warp), but as I've his music just does nothing for me. Though on saying that Satin Panthers was a big leap forward, though still too many bits we you just think he's trying to be too edgey sounding if that makes sense. Some bits I'm like, gently caress sake, polish it up don't be afraid to actually sounding slick and groovy instead of trying to be unconventional for the sake of it. That's when it sucks.

Plus they both get marked down for loving off to London first chance they got.

Fun fact: If you ever here any Glaswegian producers talk about hip-hop or graff 99% chance they're from the south side. We don't roll that way in the east end.

I am currently enduring one of the local wobble DJs opening for Starkey. I'd say I'm too old for this poo poo but I'm 25.

Anyway I could foresee Pearson Sound drawing a light crowd in this coke electro-dulled scene but you would think Starkey, who's both unafraid of siren basslines and respected to some extent in the UK, would fill more than a third of the floor. The kids, they lack refinement.

Also depressed that I'm the one guy in Butterz stuff in a sea of Bob Marley tees. Now I remember why I so rarely go out. But i've wanted to catch Starkey for years now and it's my birthday, so gently caress it, I'll suffer. Hopefully I can catch the man after his set, would like to know what he's got in the pipeline.

It's odd because I used to love Warp, but post-Flylo they've really gone in an abstract hip-hop direction (with their electronic catalog at least - I wouldn't be surprised if they made most of their money on Grizzly Bear and Battles records these days) which I have never really been a fan of. Planet Mu sort of went in a similar "bass" direction for awhile with Starkey and Kuedo and Slugabed a few years back but are pretty much in full-on footwork mode at the moment, which I'm not crazy about but I admit is pretty interesting.

I'm always kind of sad when I hear that an artist I like has signed on for multiple releases on Ninja Tune. I guess they're really good to their people but I swear they must have some sort of fun-killing magic that affects all their releases. I can't remember the last Ninja Tune release I actually enjoyed. Amon Tobin, Slugabed, Daedelus, Eskmo, Dorian Concept - they've got a whole roster of acts that I initially became excited about before they released underwhelming work on the label. Even the last Wagon Christ album sucked! And I'm a hopeless sucker for Luke Vibert. Maybe i's that I haven't shaken their association with middling downtempo jazz.

I wasn't big on Raffertie around "Wobble Horror!" day (though now I take it as kind of a joke about the music that's popular now) but his Super! imprint is pretty strong so far and I've liked a fair bit of his remix work. His production style is very... distinctive.

Well at least my faith in you has been restored slightly after your Norwegian neo-prog rock album of the year comments. Butter was just a terrible album, with brief bits of decentness fallen down between the cracks of a large slab of wankery.

With some loving terrible cover art just to rub it in.

And despite all that he still got signed by loving Warp. gently caress sake, as I've always said Warp Records, fallen so far. At least he's actually a good DJ so there's one positive.

And just out on a real format this week, the remixes of Grant Nelson's Black Water. The Soul Purpose Dub is the real gold here. Easy going, swishy House flavours there.

Yeah Warp have really been gouging away at that glitchy hip-hop thing which is very disappointing as most of it just isn't very good. And it doesn't do Warp any favours in actually being seen as a cool label again if you ask me, rather than being the home of beard stroking Aphex Twin IDM fans. A lot of these newer artists as well seem to really go off the boil after a single or two(naturally just before Warp actually gets their hands on them). I first heard FlyLo as a friend of mine went to the Red Bull Music Academy with him, and that first release of his was great, but since then? Nah, not really my cup of tea. I've not really trusted Warp's musical direction since Rob Mitchell died(and that was ten years ago). And even then I think most of their late 90s drill n bass etc output was utter shite. And the worst crime of all Warp signed Maximo Park, which is really where they get there money nowadays. Well that and continued sales of Aphex Twin CDs.

And with Ninja Tune, truth is I'm probably like you, I'm struggling to remember anything released on it in the past 6-7 years at the very least, which doesn't really speak well of it's quality I guess. Big Dada still does okay though, but even then.
