Been using a plastic garden chair for the past 2 years and I'm getting a (second-hand) Aeron soon. Should be nice.

I'm looking at getting a either a Mirra fully loaded or an Aeron fully loaded (not the executive), and the price difference is literally about $40 (on gabrielross.com for you canuck goons).

I suppose the price difference makes the Aeron a shoe-in to buy? Is it quite a bit 'better' than the Mirra?

The Aeron would certainly get my vote between those. It's hard to beat the rear end-hammock. I've had mine for almost 8 years now, and it's held up through a lot of gaming, a lot of work, and a lot of me just being a 300+ lb guy that broke Office Depot/Staples specials every year.

This thread makes me depressed because the message I'm picking up is that you can't really get a chair worth a drat unless you're willing to spend some serious money. Just so we're clear, I'm considering a few hundred dollars serious money. My opinion is skewed by my current financial situation -- I recognize that it makes sense that a chair, like a mattress, isn't something you want to skimp on.

That being said, I am still in this loving Ikea seat (the Snille). With that in mind, does anyone know of any sub-$100 chairs? I know that these chairs suck in the long term, but I'm more worried about the thing I'm currently sitting on. I'm looking for an immediate improvement on my current situation and not necessarily the chair I'll be using for the rest of my life.

Anything is better than my current poo poo.

Help. :(

I hear you. I'm 6'6 (34" inseam) and I can't find a decent chair for the life of me. At this point I'm pondering if it'll be easier to stand while online. My current Office Depot chair is loving with my lower back.

At this point it would be cheaper and easier if I just went to a junkyard, ripped out a driver side seat from an old luxury car, and attached a base to it. And I'm about a few days from doing so just so I can not have a loving backache when I'm online.

You will look awesome.

/acually, you don't want a footstool, your feet should be flat on the floor and you should be sitting upright.

Upright seating isn't actually the end all of ergonomics. A proper reclining posture is considered good for you, and an angled footrest or even a footstool can help with that depending on seat height and tilt type.

Also if your desk is tall or you are short a footrest can allow you to actually properly position your chair while keeping your feet on the ground even if you are sitting upright.

Does $580 shipped for a fully loaded Aeron in "like brand new condition" sound like a reasonably good deal?

Also, was anybody able to confirm whether the HM chairs are covered under warranty if they are purchased used?

I've never seen a warranty repair get turned down, our office has aerons that the previous tenant just left behind and HM repaired them no questions asked.

Foot rests can actually be a requirement from other factors. I have several HMs where I work. Most of the people using them require some sort of footrest because of the following: we work for a University, all our desks are from some leftover era where people did clerical/experiments or something on them, thus all our desk are probably 3-4 inches too tall. The desk situation here leads to everyone raising their HM to full height for comfortable typing, then requiring a footrest as the ground has moved too far away.

Yep, especially if it's size 'C'.

HM support sent me a new arm adjustment bolt for my used chair (admitted to support that it was used/out of warranty) no questions asked. Next time I buy, I'll get new. It really is worth the 11 year warranty.

Similarly, is $375 alright for a Size A Aeron in mint condition (but lacking a lumbar support) reasonable?

Is the lumbar support attachable/detachable/purchasable?

I just got a Size B Aeron (fully loaded with lumbar pad) for $300, negotiated down from a $400 asking price. $375 is reasonable if it's fully loaded, but if this is a base model I'd hold out for a better Aeron if I were you.

Yes, the lumbar pad is detachable. There are rails on the rear of the chair that you can slide the pad on and off of. You can buy lumbar pads on the internet. On Amazon they were $85 the last time I checked.

Is it useable without the lumbar pad though? They state that it is "fully loaded" otherwise (not sure what that means).

My issue is that I'm a shade below 5'4" and I have insane problems with my legs/thighs due to the edge of the seat cutting into the circulation. If I sit forward, I have no back support, if I sit back, my legs kill me after 10 minutes (and I have a 8+ hour office job). Yesterday I was on my cube floor stretching out my legs from the pain and doing desktop yoga, it's bad (and yes, I've been to a doctor and chiropractor).

As I understand it, finding used Size A's is rare and so if I can get a fix for my issue soon, I'm all for it. Lumbar support would definitely be nice, but do I need it to start?

Anyone know of a decent office chair for fat bastards? I've been doing 24hr shift work at an inbound call centre for a few too many years now, and as a consequence I've ballooned out to about 250lbs (only 5'7") and want something actually capable of supporting my weight, at least until I can finish knocking my weight down to something more managable.

I'm tall and I use a footstool that is some metal tubing with grooved upholstered plywood riding in the grooves so that the angle can change. It really is nice to take pressure off your lower thighs. Along with my Embody now my torso, pelvis, and footstool and move around in slight degrees which I feel helps when I'm sitting static.

'Big and Tall' might work for you, because all of them are usually built with >250 lbs people in mind. However you might get screwed on the height part, and if you're shopping local you'd likely have to go to a specialist store (e.g. $$$). Another classification they use is '24 hour' chair, which is meant for exactly what you're doing; a chair meant to be occupied for 24 hours. These are usually built a bit stronger so as to survive the rigors of being used constantly. Using both of those as search terms on any office furn site should turn up some good stuff. I'm not overweight really for my height, but even at 230lbs I would break about 2 chairs a year until I found one that was built properly.

I may have a project for that. But it'll have to wait until I find a seat without mildew. This summer has been too humid to make that easy.

Sucks to say, but you're not going to get much of a chair for that price. Best bet is probably Ikea, as their low-cost stuff is fairly decent (reliability). Be prepared to blow through whatever you end up with in a year or two.

We had layoffs at work recently, which resulted in both an Aeron and a Steelcase Leap becoming available for my selection. IMHO, the Aeron chair amounted to hype. It wasn't much more comfortable than the Global generic it replaced. The Leap was head and shoulders above the Aeron in comfort and adjust-ability. Leaps can be found cheaper, too.

Is there anything under $200 with a mesh seat? I would assume that any chair with a mesh seat would have a mesh back as well, but the seat is my priority.

If I have to spend more than $200 I might as well just buy a used Aeron I guess. But being unemployed right now I can't budget that much at the moment.

e: I'm not looking for this to last me ten years. I'll own an Aeron in a few years, but if I can get a one-year chair with mesh seat that would be ideal.

IKEA Markus. Used one for about 4 years. It has a mesh back but a leather seat. Sat on it comfortably for countless hours without any problems.

I picked up an aeron for a friend and have found that i'm still slouching in it (he isn't picking it up for a couple weeks). Has anybody ever considered wearing a seatbelt to keep them from slouching? On airplanes i cinch up the seatbelt tight so i can't slouch and it seems to help a ton. I find i slouch in pretty much any chair I sit in and it causes my lower back to get sore. Just "stay sitting up" isn't enough, I notice after half an hour I've slouched and have to sit back up.

I know it sounds dorky, but it seems like a viable solution to me...

If your back is hurting then it probably good to listen to your body but just so you know slouching isn't necessarily a bad thing. From earlier I posted this:

Yea, it's definitely not great to sit all the way up, but when your butt is on the edge of your seat after half an hour it's better than the alternative. I find myself adjusting in my chair constantly.

Aeron, task chair, or "comfy big leather chair" all end up with the same slouching result. Gah.

Picked up a new v2 Leap for ~$350 at a discount furniture outlet a few days and I've been pretty happy with thus far. This is why I love my embody. I just stick my butt back up against the backrest, and use the tilt tension/tilt limiter controls to adjust how much I want to lean. If I'm gaming, I set it so I'm straight upright. Reading SA, watching movies, etc, I drop it back a few notches so I can still get the comfort of slouching while still being supported.
