Some random thoughts/questions I haven't seen mentioned yet:

1. Is the way animal spawn changed? I hardly ever see chickens in the arboreal forest or plains that make up my spawn area, but I see a ton in a seasonal forest far away. Similarly, I don't see many cows in the arboreal forest.

2. Is animal persistence enabled now? I went around shearing sheep in a forest a while back, and when I later came back to that forest (pretty far away from my spawn point), there were shaved sheep still wandering around.

3. Is it just me or do Endermen seem to teleport to dodge attacks? That and the fact that Endermen will not just teleport closer to you and seem to not immediately appear somewhere else when teleporting makes them really disorienting to fight.

Of course, all of these things could just my mind playing tricks on me...

This sounds really neat. I never really get the exact gist of an island if that makes any sense. I never learn an area to the point where it feels like home and I know every nook and cranny, I think it's because worlds sort of blend together and because you can always explore more outward.

Buggy or not, the new leaked update is awesome.

I started a new world and over a few days built a homestead and farm. I actually like the new hunger meter, as it means you heal over time and have a reason to get more food. I discovered just underneath was a massive complex with wooden support beams and mine cart tracks. It was a vast maze that was also infested with poison spiders too. Tracking down each of the spider spawners was an adventure as these spiders are nothing to underestimate. Their smaller size makes them even more dangerous than regular spiders as one bite can DOT your health down to half a heart.

Still looking for redstone so I can map it all out. I have yet to find a ghost town but then again, I have been too afraid to stray to far for fear of getting lost.

It's drat creepy on peaceful when you go into an abandoned mine or town and start wandering around. There's that perfect 'everyone is gone and you're alone' feeling; tunnels once frequented by miners now cold, dark and empty, a previously bustling village laying silently beneath the burning sun. And you wait, you want something or someone to pop out, but it never happens. :ohdear:

Quick question: Can I use MCEdit to move something from a 1.7 map over to a fresh 1.8 map? I've been building a small city for a while and I'd love to keep it.

Here's a torii I made a while ago as the gate to the city. I'm proud of it even though I'm sure there's far better out there.

Apparently setting ones server.properties file to "online-mode=off" allows you to skip the auth servers. So the Goon server could do that if so inclined. Just connect to the server even if it reads Offline in your list.

I did the "1km track at bedrock level in the nether" thing in my SSP world to get to a new area before 1.8, and after turning on villages and strongholds, I just loaded it up in 1.8 pre and jumped through the portal at the other end, only to end up on a little floating obsidian platform over a swamp. (It was night by the time I got there, so I built that bridge with torches.)

Ah, thanks for doing this! I figured it would work, but after XX hours developing "new spawn" in the nether, it's good to see confirmation that this does indeed work!

Absolutely loving the changes to 1.8 barring one minor thing, the abandoned mines are too big and sprawling. I'm quite happy to go exploring, but they either seem to merge with other systems of mines too often or they're just really loving big. I've been wandering around getting lost for hours and hours, pretty much unable to find a natural cave system anymore, really.

Ok, I'm glad this wasn't just me. Waiting for chunks to fill in on an SMP server while flying around I noticed this as well. Maybe this will get listed as a bug? I saw abandoned mineshafts that were 5-6 stories deep and ran for 100+ blocks in each direction in a giant grid pattern. Sort of absurd and seems overkill, but at least it wasn't hard to find them! Perhaps a little too common.

Pre-release 1.8 is the first time I've even crafted a fishing rod. There's a point to it now! I stumbled into an underground ravine under my house and I guess all the available spawn entities were taken up by terrible things beneath, because regular animals stopped showing up. Had to fish to live.

I believe what he's saying is just an explanation of why 1.9 will generate worlds differently from 1.8; why the worlds will create differently again come 1.9. Which means all the seeds we're getting now will create entirely different things when that update hits (but probably won't change with 1.8 official).
The use of "were" when describing the options means they've already decided, choosing to release 1.8 now rather than delay it till when we'd be getting 1.9.

Incidentally I suppose that means biomes will be even better in 1.9. Gotta stay optimistic, right?

You can cut wild/tall grass with shears. Dunno if that would work or not. Alternately you could push a grassy block down a 1x1 shaft where you need it to go with a single piston.
