So is out-of-box file sharing between Lion and Win7 still broken or am I just not seeing a correct workaround?

Symlinks with sshfs But seriously, rsync in a cronjob? It depends on how often you need to synchronize them and how big a typical change is going to be.

Anyone know why the start-up sound when I turn my laptop on would stop playing? I picked up a new 15" MacBook Pro a couple weeks ago and for some reason about two days ago it stopped. It doesn't bother me too much, since it was kind of annoying, but I'm curious as to how it got turned off. I never changed any settings, and from what I could find it's not that easy to disable. The only culprit I can think of is I have a bad stick of RAM and the machine will crash about once a day. I plan on replacing the RAM but it will be a few days until I get home.

Here's one for the Mail experts: When I get email from my parents, it's always in a tiny font; I think it's just Outlook Express 6's default appearance as rendered by Mail.app. Is there any way to tell mail to display the plain-text alternative from certain senders only? I know about Command+Option+P, but I'd like something that persists across restarting the software, if anyone knows of such a feature.

So this has happened to me twice in the past few days—my keyboard stops responding to all input except for my shortcuts to switch spaces (⌘-1,⌘-2,⌘-3,⌘-4). I feel like last time it came back on its own, but this time I had to close the lid and open it back up. Tried disabling BetterTouchTool, but no luck there. Something to do with Mission Control, maybe? e: it's also possible it has to do with an applescript i'm running for some keystroke macros, but I feel like the first time it happened I hadn't written the script yet. I've set up a new Mini to my plasma tv as an HTPC and all is great but occasionally I will turn off the tv while the mini is still running and later when I come back and turn everything back on, the mouse cursor will disappear. It still functions as I can scroll around with my trackpad and activate links, etc but the pointer itself is invisible. The only thing that seems to cure this is rebooting my mini; turning the trackpad on and off doesn't help. How can I cure this? Running the latest version of Lion. he;lp

I know this sounds like a hardware question but I figure it's more software; if I leave my portable external hard drive switched on and hooked up to my system, will it become corrupted, especially when switching my computer on and off daily? I use it as my Time Machine and only switch it on when OS X bugs me that I haven't run Time Machine in a week, and it might be more convenient if I have more frequent backups, no?

No, it won't become corrupted. OS X will always safely unmount it on shut down. You might actually encounter some Finder lag by leaving an external plugged in all the time, since it sometimes hangs while it waits for all drives to spin up. I leave my Time Machine external plugged in all the time without issue.

As long as you're actually shutting down the system and not yanking the hard drive out or anything, you should be fine.

The startup sound has the same volume as your Mac's built-in speakers, and OSX remembers your built-in-speaker volume and audio jack volume separately. If you use external speakers or headphones, unplug them, adjust the volume, and then plug them back in. Your same problem confounded me for a while, too.
