Nah, kanji are the easy part; I already know and read Chinese, so it is really just the multiple readings I have to remember, and those are coming easily. And the grammar seems to be on par with other languages I've studied, so not worried there, either. But yeah, my classmates are pretty terrified/awestruck by the kanji at this point.

Are the QEP using the new rules already or? (e.g. the "SCNL languages don't give you a leg up since you only get those after the orals) Goondolences to those who didn't make the orals. (and to the USMC poster, look up the GI benefits where you enlist - they vary by state. OTOH the corps is a blast and a great experience.)

Same. Could they be admitting less people through the QEP because of the budget cuts? Could the hiring budget even affect passing rates at this point in the process? In any case, this was a good first run and it gives me time to reevaluate my cone situation. I might even improve my life score by next exam. Much luck to those going forward!

I have a friend (current FSO) who did exactly this in Tokyo a couple years ago and I was hoping to copy him... But if the no interns thing happens to be permanent I've got a lot of thinking to do. The brochure on State's Student Programs website has a blurb about the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Bureau, with no mention of overseas spots being limited. That's no guarantee; I'm not sure if the previous cycles' policies were changes from the beginning or during the process. In any case, if funding becomes a problem, I would predict the intern program to be one of the first things to go. Also, don't count on getting an internship. The year I chose our intern, we had more than 300 candidates for probably about 20 positions, county wide. And each office had its own criteria. I mean, yeah, it could happen (and that would be awesome, because these have to be some of the best internships available in the government) but don't plan your future around getting one.

Just to add on to what BoF is saying, as is evident from all the posters who've not made it through the process, anything within the Dept. is very competitive, and from all the talk of budget issues, will probably continue to get harder. Think of the Dept as a Harvard type college. Go ahead and go for it (intern, specialist, FSO, etc.), but for sure have a backup plan and even when you get in, understand that if major cuts come, nobody is safe. Congrats and/or regrets to everyone in this last round of OA invites. Seriously, if you didn't pass QEP, keep at it. It's not at all uncommon to pass your OA with a low score, expire off the register, and not pass the QEP the next time. It's an incredibly opaque process, and can be frustrating, but trust me it's so worth it.

Just to reiterate what other people are saying, Foreign Service is absolutely rife with RPCVs. Plus, if you do Peace Corps and then make it into FS (or any federal job), you get credit for prior service and start earning more vacation faster! (Perk) Bidding Bonanza continues. Seriously, the way they manage to draw this process out is ah-ma-zing and surely a testament to, erm, government efficiency.

Hey all! I am new here. I took and passed the June FSOT but unfortunately did not make the QEP cut. I used a lot of the info on this forum the past few months so I figure I would actually sign up. You guys have been a truly great resource (and inspiring). Little bit about me: 26, grad student (IR/Comm), work full time at a federal agency (not state), learning Chinese on the side, Foreign Service is a dream career. Question: I am thinking about applying to the State Department Summer Internship since I really need overseas experience. Anyone else applying to it? Has anyone done one?

Welcome, mtreecorner. I did a State Department internship, although not overseas; I have two very good friends who did overseas internships, and I'm pretty familiar with their experiences, so if you have any questions I'm happy to take a stab at them.

pamchenko - Would a (paid) internship in DC in Spring in a field that I am very, very interested in be worth it if it means either taking a lot of summer classes or postponing my graduation a semester? I already delayed one year to do extra research/study abroad/transfer to university from CC. I just want to build more connections at my university so I can have my research advisor set up for senior year. Unfortunately I go to school in Boston, not DC. But this opportunity seems so tempting, do you feel your internship was worth it? e: I realize this is horribly subjective and it's only a choice I can make. But do you feel like you gained skills that would be useful in your career? Was the work stimulating? Do employers seem impressed? etc. hitension fucked around with this message at 14:35 on Sep 24, 2011 |
